Bro these videos daily are so motivating to me. Learned a lot about mental toughness from you, going through a crazy time at the 9-5 (which is far from that right now!) Also about to become a dad and great to see you getting it in while still representing as a father!
I’ve been enjoying watching David Roche, who won Leadville and Javelina 100s this year, talking about fueling for ultras and the importance of “running economy” to optimise performance over ultra distances. Some great trail specific training tips in his interviews and vlogs……
In a year where I have seen the most growth in my running, progressive overload has been the key driving force. Sustained discomfort over time = Growth. I have this written down and refer to it any time I feel too fatigued or tired to show up. That is the essense of progressive overload and you exemplify it. Thank you for also emphasizing the importance of being receptive to our physical needs in the process as well. Inspirational, as always 🙌
Yowana you really awesome and it doesn’t matter for me if your morning was a suffer fest because your so much ahead of everybody else that could had gone on run but refused to 🔥🙌 So keep on marching forward dude 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 I‘m cheering for you😊
Can't speak on an ultra race by any means. However, I am also a cyclist and have done many 100 mile century rides. One of them I did had about 5k feet of elevation throughout the course, and it was absolutely brutal. I was not prepared as where I live is mostly flat. I did finish, but my time was humbling. The biggest challenge I had was battling cramps. Going up steep grades just crushed my soul and they just kept coming. I can't imagine running an ultra with 5k of elevation. Respect!!!
Interested in seeing a video dissecting your journal training tracking! I currently use my phone, for convenience, but think paper is probably a better strategy for mapping out plans and brainstorming. Would love to learn more about your process!!!
REI is cutting edge! Just like the Internet, REI understands that pockets are a fad. 😜 Your description out the driveway of the SC Trainer V3 is on point! They felt like a Chevy Suburban on this 110-115lb body. I returned my pair with just over 18 miles and 1.5 days of casual use. Gimme the V2 any day.
I think your base is probably at such a high level you'll be great as is. That said, specificity with more trails would be the best. Just like you said, you get better at running by... running. With trails, you'll have some different loads compared to road. Personally, it's the downhill that gives me issues.
the time is too short to become a mountain goat for the next race, but you have enough time to take a very specific oddity of the course into your equation. It is a 2 loop course with exactly ONE long hil per loopl. All other uphill parts are integrated in a rollercoaster of short uphills and downhills. The long up hill is about 1.6 miles long with a average ascent of 8% ( maybe around 15 minutes of uphill for you, maybe a tad more). The hill comes close to the middle of the race and at the end. ......my 2 cents in strategy In loop 1 run all the rollercoaster part relaxed, not powering up and down, just floating like a butterfly on the first time of the long hil you hold back a little at first and start pushing after running uphill for 7 minutes in loop 2 you change the running in the rollercoaster, depending on how you feel, run some of the uphills fast and strong, you sting like a bee, the last hill you run like the last 1.5 miles in a marathon race i saw a few clips from the course, wonderful, but probably slippery on the downhills with the fallen leafs, with good traction in the shoes good runnable.
@@supwell i never ran on a treadmill, but i own a walking pad. I can walk around 20% faster on the pad than outside on a bike path. If this is similar on treadmills, it makes sense to put the incline on the treadmill up to 10% to get a similar effort level than outside, maybe even add another 1% for lesss than perfect weather on race day..... as you probably noticed i borrowed the analogy float like a butterfly, sting like a bee from Muhammed Ali, who uplifted boxing to an art form. The same goes for ultra trail running. runners like Kilian Jornet or Xavier Thevenard
SPEEDLAND SPEEDLAND SPEEDLAND !! It’s the best ultra trail shoe imo. I love them. Got a three pair rotation and they also just released their road shoe. I run primarily in the GS:PDX
I’m like you. No trails near by. I can ride up to north GA in the mountains and get it in but that’s a 2 hour ride I can do only on weekends. Tough. My little town has a few good hills but not with the terrain. I’m going to get a treadmill today just so I can work on uphill climbs and decline. I know it’s not the same but I can’t just go to the mountains all the time like that.
Be thankful for the hills you have. My home route is totally flat. I can go out of my way to run bridges but they get crowded and the grade is only 3.4852% 😂
We need a video to know what to do with these new shoes that are coming out from the running event. I am looking to buy the Brooks Hyperion 2, but I don't know when the 3 is coming or if it will be similar. In general, should we wait for the new stuff or buy the older generations once they get on sale?
For your ultra, I don't know what the terrain is like. for 5K ft. in 50K, it could be a series of short, steep climbs or long, gradual hills. Is it technical or easy? I've biked both types and they're pretty different animals. That could inform your training.
Our friend Thomas mentioned in another comment that it's a bunch of up and down with one killer big hill - so two loops of that. My course around here is very undulating so I'm used to those - it's the big guy we've got to worry about. I'm def not used to climbing for 5+ minutes straight
@@supwellIf that's all you've got, keep using it. Good news is that your power to weight ratio is good, which is king for climbing hills. Sorry I can't loan you the monster climbs in my local mountains 🏔️.
I think he mentioned that, long time ago in another video, that he doesn’t do as much as he should and he’s aware he has to do more. Believe he mentioned he knows which routines but he admitted to it not being his favorite + being busy and all.
My favorite SC trainer V3 was about to restore its honor but Mach X2 kick it out of way 😢 Honestly, it's not 'Up your best' shoes. Suited for long slow cruise.
I know you've been mentioning 'partnerships' - or some version of sponsorship or other - with various brands. Plenty of your competitors play that game well. Most probably want to do it more effectively. But you have said many times you're not looking to be a sell-out. I've always completely understood and agreed that it would compromise the content and your own values. My advice as a fan: Don't allow anyone to gain any influence. I believe the only way to avoid such is to not accept any offer from any brand. Not sure whether you concur, but I hope so. BITR are a bunch of unadmitted and unapologetic pimps. If I wanted that, I'd be watching them right now. But I'm here.

Hobby Jogger hat order has arrived, keep the mustard to the gosh dang dog 🔥
55:14 Loved the apology to the SC Trainer 😂😂😂
It's great to see every time you use the SC trainer v3 🔥

I think you are already in better trail running shape than 90% of the people doing the trail run based on your training routine
Gotta close the gap on that last 10% then 😂

Love having the chapters and the transcript!
Dude I love these shoes and they work well for me and I find them fun
Need hobby jogger JUNK headbands so we can rock out in the gym

I love these insights - thank you 🫡 maybe I should hop on the treadmill at 8% incline

Brooks - Run Happy
Supwell - Run Angry
Any word on when the hobby jogger hats will be back in stock?? Thank you for all the videos:) Genuinely so meaningful
Thank you! And we'll be getting more in the next few weeks 🤫
You are running hills…but you signed up to race a mountain 😂
If I had a mountain in my backyard you better believe I'd be running that instead 😩

Minthillian Jornet 🤣🤣🤙🏼
A lot of people complain about heel damage in the Mach x2. What are your thoughts? I’m considering picking up a pair
Yeeee

man, you live in a beautiful area.
Hey Yowana do you do strength exercises? Like squads or push up’s in your routine or just run?
I think he mentioned that, long time ago in another video, that he doesn’t do as much as he should and he’s aware he has to do more. Believe he mentioned he knows which routines but he admitted to it not being his favorite + being busy and all.
Yeah spot on in the replies. I don't go the gym anymore - just running
you still gonna be going for that 2:29 after the ultra?
Yessir
I think this will help.
A phase focused on shorter races probably would too. Work toward the ultimate goal from both directions.
My favorite SC trainer V3 was about to restore its honor but Mach X2 kick it out of way 😢

Hoka Mach X 2.. BANG
🐐🐐🐐
Beautiful fatigue, beautiful fatigue!
Audio only on left ear starting at 1:06:28
Yeah this mic wire is trash now. Gets loose so easily from all the use. I'm gonna pick up a new one
Stairmaster since you don't have steep trails by you.
It’s all personal, but I did not enjoy the SC V3 at all. After loving the V1 so much, the V3 let me down as much as The Matrix 3 did…
😂 I think golden retrievers can bite too

New Balance foams are the worst. They bottom out within 5 miles of their first run.
