This Massive Diamond is a Freak... and It's About to Go on Sale

  • May 18 -- Even in the world of rare stones, Foxfire is a freak. It was buried in a place where big gem-quality diamonds aren’t supposed to exist. A Rio Tinto Group ore processor was configured to discard it. And what saved the diamond’s 187.7 carats from being pulverized was a fluke: Its unusual, elongated shape allowed it to slip sideways through a filtering screen.

To all the people here hating on diamonds, diamonds have been a symbol, a status which many people call a rock with a huge amount of value, when cheap cotton and dyes can make a t-shirt that is valued at hundreds of dollars just for the sake of branding, why not a rock which is rare(not as rare as de beers and such companies say it) and shiny be given value, a marriage of nature, history and art to make highly refractive attractive jewels. At the end, it's about supply and demand; humans have been in love with this rock for quite sometime now and will surely still will be. To the "its just a worthless stone" people..
For one, diamonds hold value because of their nearly indestructible nature. "diamonds are forever" wasn't coined for nothing. Their extreme hardness makes them virtually impervious to scratching, chipping, etc. Whereas cheap jewelry stones like cubic zirconia will scratch and become hideous when the wind blows to hard, diamonds retain their high luster and brilliance basically forever.
Two, its a game for the rich. Set aside the fact diamonds hold a premium thanks to the massive scam via Debeers, diamonds have and always will be the most sought after stone by those who can afford them. Its no different than 500,000$ + supercars. Just because you can't afford them doesn't mean they don't hold the value or significance to those who can. Maybe your toyota Camry, a .25 ct diamond, is affordable, "reasonable", etc.. but if you had the money, why would you not want a 4ct Pagani?
Its all in the perspective of the owner. Its easy for us not in the position to ever have these things to brush them aside as valueless.

It doesn't mean they're worthless, and the entire point of this video is the specific rarity of a diamond like this; diamonds like these are LEGITIMATELY rare. They're a big deal, that's why videos are made, that's why only the mega rich are the ones to own them and make royal jewelry with them that last for millenia. Its not like you can go dig a hole in your back yard and find a 50ct chunk of diamond like you can with many other gems.

      No dude.
No one wanted diamonds nor thought much of them before the early 1900s.
Especially for engagement rings or other jewelry

Great question. Here's what I, as a working poet, have to say about it: "Love is a moment of time we cling to, because, for that moment, everything else is meaningless. Life is utterly simplified, reduced to its least common denominator--the impetus to share oneself with an/the object of desire."

If one were to think about how many diamonds have been turned into jewelry, rings, pendants, bracelets, and earrings;over the course of the past two hundred years or so- how can anyone not realize how we are being duped? Rare? every different size, every different color, it is marketing trickery, and nothing more.

its also cuz the larger diamond was more beautifuler it was clear and not as yellow and didn't have as much imperfections so its not just the size cuz most of the time that size has to be cut down if you want it to be a real diamond the way we see today

If you really cared, you can mine for diamonds and sell them to fund environmental causes....
If you really cared, you can mine for diamonds to fund green initiatives....
If you really cared, you can mine for diamonds to fund charitable or welfare programs......
If you really cared, you would do your best to be rich and use the wealth to make the world a better place. To save the world.
Truth is, you really don't care, or you would replace the word "diamond" in your comment with "I."
Truth is, you don't wanna do anything, so you find easy scapegoats for your own shortcomings.
How lame is it to blame your problems on chunk of mineral?
