    I have had this Tascam 16-ch model in my studio for years and it worked like a charm. Cannot replicate that warm sound from today DAW-s

    Your Tascam sounds excellent; far better than any Studer I have ever heard. I am so happy that I am an owner of a Tascam ATR 60 and ATR 80. I love the analog sound.

      what a stupid comment... you hear the sound from TH-cam - which is way way way way way..... - worse than any of these recorders and you judge those marvelous machines based on this experience??? Oh boy........

    That's about what I was asking for it. I sold the tape machine for $2k in the end but it was destroyed in transit to Queensland. Absolute tragedy. Sent it via Pack and Send and they sent it to Brisbane with some unknown trucking company, the machine didn't survive the journey. The buyer was compensated after some struggle.

      It is sad how that happens.... bought a rare Teac 35-2 in “mint” condition almost new and the guy used a frieight company but chose to sign a waiver to pack it “unsafe” to save money... off the extra price i paid for frieght... it came smashed and took a year to get back.... almost all brand new parts but still... sorry that happened and that happens

    When I worked at Data Tape, in the 90's, we had a recorder that held a terabyte on one square inch of tape. That's a lot of tape for an analog recording. No wonder it sounds so good. Seven and a half inches of tape per second. Hmm.

    As much as I love DAWs you got to admit this sounds better and raw. The standard today wants ppl to process everything to the ground making it sound watered down.

      I had one of these. It was a relief when digital came along. 16 tracks on one inch was pushing it when it came to track width and this was nowhere near the quality of 24 track Studers, for instance. And I really didn't like DBX noise reduction much. But there were really good reasons why in the industry we started going digital in the late seventies and didn't stop. And it wasn't just convenience.

      No, I do not have to admit what you subjectively LIKE better objectively SOUNDS better.
      Objectively good sound is sound that is as close to the original as possible.
      Subjectively good sound is whatever your personal preference determines.

    Really cool to learn about this unit. I wonder how much applies to the Tascam 85-16b…
    (I know someone who’s selling one, and I’m really considering it!) Anyone here have experience with them? How is the hiss level? / low end?

    I'm a noob trying to get into reel to reel recording. If you don't mind me asking, how do you get the tracks to be mixable with the real mixer? Does the ATR-60 have direct outs for each track? OR is it a special cord that connect the two? Thanks.

    • @urniurl
      @urniurl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes the recorder has 16 balanced (xlr) lines in and 16 balanced lines out at the back of the unit.

    Hi, sorry to bother you but I recently bought one of these really cheap but it didn't come with the remote , which i was told is how you arm the tracks to record , is there a way to arm to record and other functions without the remote ? Thanks for any help!

    • @urniurl
      @urniurl  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes that's correct you'll need the remote which you can see from the 4.28 of this video. There isn't any capacity to arm the tracks without it.

    Don't know if it's the mix, but a two inch i've heard on another channel puts this to shame no offence. I can hear the lack of quality over everything. But i would take a machine like that over pro tools any day, minute, second.

      I just bought one and I love the classic sounds of Brian Wilson and Phil Spector and Motown. I was fortunate to have a collection of instruments and equipment including a Hammond B 3 and Leslie and an upright piano a dozen guitars and used saxophones inherited over 45 years by my father. The secret to gett

      The sound was so warm and yet I was still unhappy with the finished result so I took a moment and remembered the producers in the days of early rock n roll didn't use digital reverb but relied upon echo
      everb chambers. So I went about researching the the famed Gold Star Studios echo chamber and other innovative studios for in depth info. I took a chance and found that a cylindrical steel water tank I came across at the local dump could work. It was too small and was rusted from use, however the manager was a cool dude from Jamaica and was deep into music too and when I explained why I wanted to have a steel tank he took me seriously and I learned brand new tanks that were flawed had to be scrapped due to safety regulations and he had them coming in all the time. So he said if any bigger tanks came his way he would happily let me know and keep them from the scrap metal collectors. In a few weeks he had set aside four big fat propane and water tanks for me and one was just about the right demensions and for 29 bucks I had what I needed. Took it home and cut a hole for a hatch cleaned it up and in no time I had fitted out the device with one speaker and ribbon mics. It has made the recordings sound more authentic and less synth, not enhancing the sound but making the mixing and blending feel natural and like nothing a digital device has ever been close to replicating.

    I would pay you 1000 for that equipment and another 1000 for the sound board! Ha Ha! Where do you buy your equipment!
