- China has finished renovating a grand mosque in the province of Yunnan, removing its
Arabic-style features.
It's part of a campaign to change the look of Muslim places of worship.
Some 2000 mosques have been modified or destroyed in recent years.
Critics say the government is trying to get rid of foreign influence and control religion.
Beijing denies those claims.

Background information: Arabic style mosque appeared in China only 30 years ago with partial or full funds from Saudi Arabia, while Chinese style mosque existed in China for the past 700 years.
Returning to Chinese style mosque is to maintain tradition. Mosque is not necessarily required to be Arabic.

In Malaysia, there are several mosques that have a Chinese look (almost like a Chinese temple but it is not a Chinese temple) such as Masjid Beijing in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan. There are no issues despite the fact Malaysia is a multiracial country with mixing culture with Malay, Chinese and Indian including orang Asli, Iban, Kadazan.

To be honest, there was no dome in original prophetic mosque. Dome was adopted from Byzantine to reflect the chant or prayer sound. But, today we have sound system.

Exclusively for Cheraman Jumma Masjid, oldest mosque in India, built during prophet's lifetime, which was designed in traditional Malayali tropical architecture. The onion style mosques and Darvaza are mostly Turco-Persian influence came since the Ghaznavid conquest until Mughal period in North India and Osmani period in Deccan. But in deep South, Islam came directly from Arabia through spice route and the conversion was directly done by traders from Arabian Peninsula by building locally and simple tropical architectured mosque. Actually, it is up to you to choose an architecture for a mosque as long as it does not include animal symbols, humanic symbols or other religious symbols (such as cross and swastik).

China has a couple of thousand years old mosques like great mosque of Xi'an ( built in 742 AD) and Huaisheng Mosque in Guangzhou ( built in 627 AD) which are all in Chinese style, so why change it to Arabic style since it's in China.
Not all of China is Han, Xinjiang or Turkistan as it was historically called is a different Uyghur and other Central Asian ethnic groups who neither speak Chinese or have Chinese culture. There local architecture and clothing was like those of central asia. There historically were no pagoda style buildings in Xinjiang. There are hundreds of historical brick done mosques there and wooden column ones based on Persianate central asian architecture.
It wanst changed. It was built new. And that communities time effort and money went into it. Chinese government just displayed Islamphobia and mean spiritedness by dismantling that dome.

This was a strange documentary, which makes an issue out of nothing. I actually support changing the dome into Chinese architecture to bring more traditional character to those mosques. Islam is not an Arab culture but a world religion. And no, changing domes does not bring it under attack

What is considered Islamic architecture has some of its origins from the Byzantine, Babylonian and great structures like Bukhara. They are all ephemeral and do not add to the central message. The first mosque was a courtyard from which the prophet PBH lead the prayers and gave sermons. It did not have embellishments. Those came later and in my mind, are peripheral to the faith.

The core value of religion is Faith. We don't have to have a similar culture to be a believer. In Indonesia, we have Chinese style mosque and Church, Javanese style mosque. Even our founding father said, "You don't have to be a jew to be a christian, and don't have to be an arab to be a moslem." That what makes a difference between people who are mature in faith or only the surface. One more thing, why Indonesia become the largest moslem country that was predominantly Hindu and Buddha? My friend made a good point in a sense that it's just a building style that fits their culture.
Islam is a religion first and foremost, not a culture. As long as the mosque work as a mosque would, the design shouldn't matter (unless it has something that islam forbids, like statue)

I for one love domes, I think they are awesome. I prefer mosques in China to have domes but not exclusively domes. Some can be of Han architecture style. Some maybe can be of other form or style. In Islam, you don't worship a mosque. You worship IN a mosque and mosque can be of different dignifying form.
But I feel there is more to this. Is it anti Islamic or anti Muslim? Maybe not. It is more of an attempt to restyle the architecture instead of banning or curbing Islam.
The quba mosque, the original, does not even have a dom. Just a flat top roof and a minaret with a pointy spire.

The mosques during the time of the Holy Prophet used to be mud walls with date leafs as a roof. The islamic architecture we see today is a mix of Roman and Persian. Later elaborated upon by the Turks. All while this has become iconic for Muslim architecture. Characteristically, it is not inherently Muslim.

On the way from that county to Xining, the capital of Qinghai, I would see mosques from time to time, and I saw mosques more frequently when I was strolling in Xining. As a Han Chinese, it was quite shocking. The above are all what I saw with my own eyes, which are very different from the information conveyed by this video. So who should I believe? Shouldn't it be what I saw and heard myself?

I am a Muslim and I don't find a problem with that. They did not close or destroy the mosque as some foolish politicians do to win elections based on hatred and division in some countries. They only changed the architectural style to match the architecture of their country. Seeing Islam in different cultures is a joyful thing.
