Aurigny Dornier 228NG TRIP REPORT | Southampton to Alderney

  • Hello everyone and welcome to this video. I have been very excited to fly this flight and bring to you a video about it. So here we are, my flight with Aurigny on their Next Generation Dornier 228 turboprop. Unlike most planes in the world, this aircraft is very rare and has only 19 seats, with no cockpit door. This is definitely the ultimate Island hopper airplane!
My day started at the Southampton Airport Premier Inn which is situated next to the airport. After arriving at the airport, I explored the rather small land side area, which has a few coffee shops. The Aurigny check in occupied one check in desk. Once through security, I was through to the small air side lounge. Here, there was a duty free shop and a few other coffee shops.
My flight was scheduled to depart at 10:15, which would take me all the way to Guernsey on two hops, with a stop on the little island of Alderney in the channel islands. We got a bus to a remote stand at the airport, and I boarded first as I was in seat 1A, and there's a very small door at the back. Due to the size of the aircraft, I had to crouch to get through the door and to get to my seat!
My aircraft was a Dornier 228NG, the newer generation of the original Do 228-212. This aircraft was manufactured by RUAG in Germany and was delivered to the airline in December 2018, to replace the Britten-Norman Trislanders and the current old generation D228's. The newer Dorniers have a glass cockpit, and newer more efficient Honeywell TPE331-10 turboprops, capable of 776 shp each, as well as other changes.
The flight was approximately 30 minutes at 7,000ft at 250mph. The plane was extremely noisy and I wished they had given out earplugs!
Overall, it was a great flight, purely for the novelty! Aurigny now operate a direct service to Guernsey, so you wouldn't generally fly on the Dornier as this stops in Alderney and you pay more for it!
I hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, make sure to Like,

Hah, i remember flying on Aurigny Islanders in thr 70's, each passenger was weighed and allocted a seat! (Max of 6 passengers i believe, and often one of them sat next to the pilot!) The good old days

These planes can land on bad runways , they require less than 800m to take off and less than 600m to land.

Great video! Suprised an airline is using such small aircraft if you think about Emirates and their A380's!

I don’t think that an A380 would finish braking in time before it went over the cliff.
