Judge: You stand accused of countless acts of terrorism, murder, vandalism, espionage, smuggling, thievery, kidnapping, torture, extortion bribery, blackmail, and blatant willful abuse of authority. How does the defendant plead? Starscream: *I'm INNOCENT!!!!!!!* 😭😭
Seeing starscream going from "ill never take another life" to "oh im gonna squish those creatures like insects" is heart breaking... for multiple multiple reasons like you perfectly describe
This is honestly a really good origin to Starscream and his name. I really like how he always had hints about wanting to be seen but he wasn't always so egotistical. War brings out the best and worst in people. Heck, we're getting more hints about what war did to Optimus Prime. Something the Bayverse failed to properly dive into.
i really love how they're handling starscream in this comic run, it feels like the first time in forever where it feels like the writers really grasped the duality of his tragic past and his treacherous future in a way that feels natural
TFA and TFP Starscream might be my favorite reincarnation, but damn Skybound Starscream probably my new favorite Starscream. It’s sad to see a passionate, nice and chill scientist to one of most evil and violent transformer 😢
I love how clearly and extremely evil they’ve written Megatron this time around, to the point where I’m almost rooting for Cobra Commander to get him back despite how bad that situation could be for Cybertron in the long term. Because personally, I’m tired of “sympathetic” Megatron. In fact, he’s never been sympathetic except Shattered Glass. *Maybe* G1 given his origins of being created as the ultimate weapon of mass destruction by earlier Decepticons, and never really knowing anything else, but that’s pretty much it.
I'm really curious about him showing mercy towards that Cobra-La henchman who helped him, and to a lesser extent his "I respect your will to fight but not your cause" spiel. I wonder if Megatron is a bit sly? Presenting himself as a ruthless but noble figure while pushing the dirty work on his followers so they pick up all the flack.
@@gota7738 I stated this elsewhere, but Megatron’s a dangerous manipulator, and personally, from what we’ve seen, I think he’s using the war as an excuse to commit violence out of enjoyment and a craving for power as usual. He still has some self-restraint, but I don’t think it’s going to last. Basically, he’s living out a twisted sadistic fantasy like Shockwave, but it seems he’s limited in some way we don’t know yet.

He played Starscream like a damn instrument)
@@pepita2437 I’ll give you an extra example: In G1 he discerned the Dinobots’ weaknesses from Soundwave’s mind reading, approached them guarding a meteorite he wanted and convinced them to turn against Optimus. The only reason why the Dinobots chose to follow him again was because Optimus saved Grimlock’s life, from the meteorite exploding. I genuinely think that it’s not his fusion cannon that is the most dangerous thing about him, it’s his voice. Megatron constantly makes arrogant decisions that cost the Decepticons victory, and has literally confessed that he views them as expendable, but somehow, he rallies them into fighting another day.
His backstory shows that he wasn't born evil. Like most people, sometimes they're pushed to be their worst selves and even when their abusers are out the picture they continue the horrible trend because that's all they've known.
This backstory still didn’t make me feel bad for Starscream. Like at all. 8:00 While definitely showing signs of recklessness and being a little self-centred in #13, I didn't get the impression that he only thought about himself. We see he's worked with Jetfire on his plans to find a solution for their Energon shortage, and he shows real concern for their wellbeing. There's also an obvious contrast with how he sees other life with the Cybertronian insects and how he first reacts to the cat in #14. It doesn't come across like he just changed his mind, but rather something about his thinking patterns changed. The impression I got was that the experience of being physically forced to kill, worsened those flaws and seemingly shut down his empathy. Possibly even degraded some of his cognition? It's really interesting to look back on his insistence that the Autobots are evil or how he seems genuinely upset that Skywarp got hurt while still doing...everything that he does. It was like there's some sort of disconnect in his processor. The revelation that he became what he is now, seemingly via his mind being disconnected from his body and actions, would explain a lot.
Really paints the moment Starscream betrayal of Megatron in the 2024 FCBD special in a whole new light. It’s Megatron being done in by a monster that he made.
True prior to this, the original gun mode was interpreted as a way to question why Megatron would even need anyone to wield him if he was truly as powerful but this kind of clears that doubt anyone would've had, Megatron is a master manipulator and even when he is quite literally in anyone else's control he is still the one who pulls the strings
Thank you for talking about this. Starscream is a personal favorite. Not because I think he's innocent - he absolutely is a rotten person who makes the worst decisions over and over. But while other characters get to try to develop beyond that, he never does. It's just that, as a reader, we can see where he came from (in various continuities), understand some of his motivations, and see a vulnerable person underneath. I think he's been played off as a joke, or merely a plot device for some really strange things for such a very long time. Some of his fans want to see what would happen if he were to be given a story where he gets to start coming back from all that. Some stains can not be cleansed but I think watching him try or where he in the very least finds peace would be a compelling story, even if it were a short one-off. War is ....beyond words. When the war is done, many choose not to live anymore - so yes it changes people. But does it really just turn them in to raving lunatics?
Starscream reminds me of the character named Abou Tarek in Denis Villeneuve’s movie “Incendies”. Both have similar tragic backgrounds but as times went by, they kept committing atrocities that their war crimes outweighed their tragedy that by the end it’s too late for their redemption.
I would say that what Starscream experienced in that moment when he was put into the position of executing those Autobots was simply battling against temptation and ultimately failing. Megatron was not only manipulating him, but pressuring him to murder their prisoners, and Starscream, having never taken the life of another Cybertronian and not having any sense of bloodlust, felt extremely uncomfortable with the whole ordeal. The loss of one of his best friends unfortunately acted as a source for him to "justify" his action on killing those Autobots. We humans experience this too, except it is usually in a much smaller scale. Even the best men out there still have this "voice" in the back of their minds that wants them to do evil, and the voice will use whatever reason (no matter how illogical and immoral) to justify the action, for it uses your emotions against you. Utimately, though, it is up to the person to decide if they will reject the temptation and choose to do good instead, or, give in.
'acted as a source for him to "justify" his action on killing those Autobots.' I pretty much disagree. He did not want to kill those prisoners, and was genuinely surprised when Megatron ordered him to do so(in the comics he was actually confused for a second when Megatron ordered the execution, because he was willing to follow the rules of prisoners of war being spared). Starscream had no murderous intent toward those prisoners. This wa something which was forced upon him by Megatron.
@@pepita2437 Ah, okay. Looking back at it, you're right. The page that shows this incident is more aligned to what you were saying. My recollection was off, then.
It's not a question of blaming who's the victim and perpetrator. It's the question of y war even happening in the first place. Anyone even optimus prime could become starscream when their circumstances are similar to his.
Issue 14 RUINED ME! I think the idea of introducing a new "mind control power" as one of Megatron's abilities is fresh and adds a completely new and disgusting level of power to why bits choose to follow Megatron in the first place. I'm very eager to see if Johnson will give Megatron a backstory in the near future.
The idea that Megatron can control those who hold his gun mode makes this take literally the ONLY take on gun Megatron I've liked. Every other gun Megatron can't do that. He requires someone to hold him and can easily be turned on his own troops. This is the first time the gun mode doesn't feel out of place for him because it actually emphasized his tyranny for once.
They’re really setting Megatron up as the big bad for Skybound Transformers, considering Megatrons gun mode looked like a tank and that he escaped a military base, I assume he’s probably gonna scan a Cobra tank as his first alt mode, I say first because Megatron is known for Transforming into just about every thing, hell, he might also scan a cobra copter and be a triple changer, I also think that Megatrons corruption powers that he seems to have are so powerful that his arm alone in corrupting Optimus and might eventually turn him into Nemesis Prime, I think this could happen as with Megatron being as powerful as he is, normal Optimus just might not be enough thus for they bring out Nemesis to put them on equal footing, but that’s just my theory
This made me want the Starscream from Transformers One to be like his sky bound counterpart. But as for Megatron's involvement for Starscream's path, wouldn't it resemble to how his Energon counterpart joined the Decepticons?
I wonder how Skybound Starscream or any other Starscream would feel if they knew how much the fandom loves them. I like to think that they would feel good or happy if they knew the number of people who look at them with fondness and interest.
Yeah I guess they would a lot of Starscreams don't really want power for the sake of power they want adulation and constant appreciation for his ego/self esteem so I think they would like it
Nice work, as always! I think DWJ threads the needle really well here, so we understand why Starscream is the way he is without absolving him of his horrible actions. And Starscream shooting Megatron out of the shuttle millions of years ago hits very differently after this issue...
7:09 I don't want to sound like I'm defending Starscream, but I find his mod swings in issue 14# to be interesting some people just brush it as "Starscream being himself" however, I think it has more to it. When the boy (I forgot his name sorry) shows him the drawing of him Starscream looks happy and smiles then immediately flips his mood and threatens the boy. This happens again when he sees the cat, first he says "Whaah, what's that?" In excitement. Then, again, he flips to his usual violent self and says "I must kill it!" I think there's still a little bit of left Ulchtar in him or maybe he is masking his real self in favour of this ruthless warrior like in IDW. Regardless this doesn't excuse what he did in issue 1# onwards or anything however it is a detail that I think many people overlook. I've seen some people say Starscream will get a redemption arc but, no, that's not happening. As much as I would love to see how Daniel will handle a Starscream redemption story, it will not happen if he did too much damage that can't be fixed.
There are 2 moments from the issues 13 and 14 that stood out to me. In 13 we see "Ulctar" stop Genvo from killing the cybertron insects. In that moment it shows Ulctar as a compassionate person who valued life. But as soon as I read that scene, I remembered what Starscream did to Carly's dad and that moment is now extremely tragic. In issue 14, we see that page where Starscream slowly loses his innocence. At first he was hesitant to kill anyone but over time, he started to enjoy it. It reminded me of the old saying, "monsters are not born. They are made."
I think we kinda see how Starscream's sense of brutality is also his own in how both Starscream and Megatron use violence upon smaller creatures. Starscream's impulse was to have a cruel sense of playfulness is squishing any human he could get his pedes or hand near. Megatron's crushing of the Cobra La member was to intimidate the other to get info on his hand, and he didnt go back and kill said other member. If Starscream was in Megatron's situation he would've went on a rabid rampage as when he saw the Cobra La agents, and stuck around to kill Globulus and co. Or even back when Cobra Commander was monologuing at Megatron, if it was him, Starscream wouldve done his best to rage even in a weakened state. Whereas in Starscream's position, Megatron probably wouldve went to the talking manipulating bit faster with the MARS agents. They both see the organics as lesser than and hate being under someone's elses control. But Megatron is more calculated and driven to a goal, whereas Starscream acts on his emotions and impulses. As of now I get the impression that Megatron wouldn't go out of his way to massacre lesser beings, thats just something Starscream developed to feel power somehow. Thus while awful, yea hes not innocent or defendable lol. He didnt have to crush a man in his hand, or go blow up the hospital, etc etc, and he coerces Astrotrain to also partake in such violence at another hospital in order to get Spike to reveal himself (despite the train expressing personal hesitances to do it, but resigning to it in a "thats just how life is in war" attitude). Also its a nice little thing, how Starscream's betrayal of Megatron was bound to happen. If Megatron wasn't such a manipulator, Starscream probably wouldve been the type to help him. And how Megatron didnt have full control of Starscream that he expected. Cant wait for them to meet again !
I really doubt it tbh, starscream is capable of redemption but he just doesn't want to he has no reason to seek it,he despises the Autobots, Megatron and even half of the decepticons, he takes loss in the worst way possible if he lost anything else he'd just spiral even further I think the point the comic was trying to make is whoever Ulchtar was is dead. The most Starscream can ever really hope for in my view is to get some semblance of inner peace.
Does anybody else think that Genvo sorta resembles Metal Hawk a little bit? He's got that similar color scheme, and before I knew his name, i thought, "oh cool metal hawk"
I just wanna say before this video goes live that in my personal opinion, while I do understand why Starscream became who he is in the present day, he was such an utter bastard in the first 7 issues that I really don't feel bad for him. If you do feel bad for him, that's completely fine. But I personally wait for the issue where he's killed off for real.
Fair point. As my video will discuss, being a victim of cruelty is horrible, but, in the end, it really matters how the victim chooses to continue their life afterwards. Was Starscream used by Megatron for evil? Yes. Is he completely innocent in his actions? No.
To be fair he doesn't become such an utter bastard in the first 7 issues without the bad things happening in the flashbacks of these two issues. It doesn't change how monstrous he is now, but it does recontextualise it into a more tragic situation. There's a timeline out there where Starscream didn't join and stayed a kind & gentle scientist.
@@gota7738 I get that, I'm not saying he isn't tragic to some extent. And who knows, maybe if his origin was released before the first 7 issues' contents, I could feel bad for him. But as it is, he's not gaining my sympathy.
One thing that stands out for me in this continuity, compared to previous comic runs, is that the Decepticons here are decidedly less... ideologically coherent than we're used to. I mean, IDW had Megatron as a true warrior-scholar, a mix of Lenin and Genghis Khan with a hearty dose of trauma-induced bitterness that fermented into supremacist thinking. Here though, the 'Cons are much closer to the kind of thing we would expect of a Fascist paramilitary, committing spontaneous acts of terrorism in the name of a strongman leader who exploits people's pain and uncertainty of their futures and turns it into something rotten. It does mean Megatron's character hasn't exactly got as many layers (which in fairness is to be expected considering DWJ only has 24 issues to work with), but it doesn't feel any less believable for it. I mean how many cult leaders and the like have we seen to be ultimately deeply selfish individuals who just want to exercise power over others? After so many years of seeing the Decepticons be entangled in political ambitions and struggles, with a warped vision for a better, fairer Cybertron that only saw them follow in the footsteps of their oppressors due to their self-superiority, I appreciate that they went in the direction of something much more *blunt.* DWJ's Decepticons are Brownshirts, no question; for as much as I love a lot of what came before, this new direction has given us a lot more opportunity to focus on the people that Megatron brought under his sway since we know exactly what the Big M is about. Big props to the guys at Skybound for taking that risk.
That for sure is a part of it yes. Seeing Geneva fall in line so eagerly is the radicalization, but I think it's a little more focused on the "mind control" aspect when it comes to Starscream given his headache and Megatron's commands

The original toy he was based on transformed into a gun, they kept it for the cartoon and explained it with their ability for "mass shifting" in the lore
Some continuities have taken the time to explain how Mass Shifting works, however, the Skybound comic run has not yet dived into that. Writer DWJ obviously is pulling from the G1 Cartoon, and therefore, things like Mass Shifting is just possible without explanation. I personally enjoy it, as not everything needs to have a detailed explanation all the time. The IDW comic run does explore where and how the technology was invented though.

Then, again, he flips to his usual violent self and says "I must kill it!"
I think there's still a little bit of left Ulchtar in him or maybe he is masking his real self in favour of this ruthless warrior like in IDW.
Regardless this doesn't excuse what he did in issue 1# onwards or anything however it is a detail that I think many people overlook.
I've seen some people say Starscream will get a redemption arc but, no, that's not happening. As much as I would love to see how Daniel will handle a Starscream redemption story, it will not happen if he did too much damage that can't be fixed.
wake up babe, Delta Trion dropped another TF essay
Gun Tank is best for Megatron
That's a Mobile Suit Gundam reference.
Starscream nooo :(
Jokes aside I don’t know what it is but skybound starscreams origin makes me actually sad for him cause he was so adorable
They are made."
im so excited for this omg, lowkey wanting to pay for that sweet sweet 20€ postal fee on some ebay listings for the singular skybound comic numbers
Skybound transformers is the best thing to happen to the franchise
That's actually a really interesting observation
I think Starscream being redeemed is possible.
Funny Tank Gun
Wow. They made us feel bad for the bee-shooting pilot-masher.
Finally !
I❤Starscream !
Does anybody else think that Genvo sorta resembles Metal Hawk a little bit? He's got that similar color scheme, and before I knew his name, i thought, "oh cool metal hawk"
For every bot that Optimus shoots, he’ll just make more enemies that way
NOOO MY HEART PLEASE
The Starscream in Batjax was more WHOLE than any other Starscream I will ever KNOW.

I get that, I'm not saying he isn't tragic to some extent. And who knows, maybe if his origin was released before the first 7 issues' contents, I could feel bad for him.
But as it is, he's not gaining my sympathy.
@@Couch_Banana Aye that's fair. It's interesting how the way information is presented changes how readers respond to it.
I just peeped the thumbnail it's a combo of megatron's og and current form
Loving this origin story
take a shot eveytime he says ulchtar
You'll be hammered pretty quickly haha
Jetfire's name beforehand was Skyfire this was canonized from Transformers G1.
It sure was! But, we don't know if that was his name in this continuity. Would be interesting to find out though.
Megatron's Tank-gun mode looks way too much like the car-gun blasters from Power Rangers Turbo/Carranger
6:19 The word you are looking for is “radicalization”.
That for sure is a part of it yes. Seeing Geneva fall in line so eagerly is the radicalization, but I think it's a little more focused on the "mind control" aspect when it comes to Starscream given his headache and Megatron's commands
This backstory still didn’t make me feel bad for Starscream. Like at all. He 's a bastard who killed the first human he's ever seen for no reason, who destroyed a hospital for fun, and was about to kill Cliff after he spared his life, people seem to forget. I feel this backstory was put there to make us feel bad forcefully for a character that everyone love (which I love too)
Still like the backstory tho, even if I don't think it is appropriate for the context of the story.
I love this
Oh wow😮😮😮
I'm kinda new to the larger tf universe. Is there a lore reason how/why Megatron can transform into a small gun?
The original toy he was based on transformed into a gun, they kept it for the cartoon and explained it with their ability for "mass shifting" in the lore
Some continuities have taken the time to explain how Mass Shifting works, however, the Skybound comic run has not yet dived into that. Writer DWJ obviously is pulling from the G1 Cartoon, and therefore, things like Mass Shifting is just possible without explanation. I personally enjoy it, as not everything needs to have a detailed explanation all the time. The IDW comic run does explore where and how the technology was invented though.
Thanks for the explanations! I honestly was just curious if it's ever addressed in the lore, lol
I still won't ever forgive him for what he did to Bumblebee
