How I "Flip" my Garden Beds WITHOUT Disturbing Soil!

- In this video, I go through my entire process of taking an overgrown garden bed and turning it into a refreshed bed ready for the next succession of crops. I do it without disturbing soil much, by building a basic lasagna bed (layers of carbon and compost) .
There is no perfect way to garden, but lately I've preferred no-dig methods as they take dramatically less work while seemingly producing great results. Please chime in with questions and remarks in the comments below as I really do enjoy reading and responding to them!

I appreciate how often you say, “…but we’re not gonna worry about that,” because I tend to worry about everything and gardening is a respite from that!
I feel like Jacques is built out of idealized village neighbor material.
So fricken thorough Jacques!! You explained ideas in an accessible way that was enjoyable and relaxing. You also answered all the questions I had as I naturally thought whilst watching. I didn’t have to stop video and google anything. I feel the video was well paced. It wasn’t rushed but I also didn’t realise I’d watched a near 30 minute video. The kitty is babka and she is the boss cat around here. Tephra, the best dog, will be making more features in the future!

I like these details and your explanations of what things mean in a way that is not too technical and easy to understand when you have never heard that particular term before. I like the pace and what and why as we go. It makes it easy to watch instead of stressful, as some people go too fast or assume you already know stuff. Great job. I agree with the commenter who said "pet the kitty!" lol. I think the detail is good for really serious gardeners but I also recommend mixing it up with some shorter, pithier content for those of us who have shorter attention spans. Just a suggestion. Having said that, I found the whole thing very helpful.
I LOVE the details in your videos! A lot of things in the garden benefit from a longer-form explanation. I enjoy the style of Kevin's shorter and more generalized content, but yours are more of a deep dive which I really love! It's education where it's sorely needed.
PS: Cats and their need to be RIGHT in the shot at least once a video. 🤣

Awesome! I'm enjoying the casual yet very informative videos. I've been gardening for 10+ years, and I'm still learning off of people like you.
A little editing advice if wanted. At 5:40 you mention plants like flowers and peppers but the camera is zoom out. Maybe take some b-roll footage (later if you are solo) of those plants while you're explaining it, instead of the zoomed out shot?
Your garden is amazing and can't wait to see how the chicken run looks with the fruit trees
I for sure need to be more aware of what I am mentioning and take more b-roll, I tend to think I have way more than I actually do haha.
you could also put up a pic of the plant in question, reducing the need for b-roll footage.
I have been searching years YEARS for a video like this!! I ♥️ gardening; my sons not so much. 😉 One video explains to them just enough what they needs to do and just enough of “why”. I may be guilty of spending too much time on the explaining. 😆

This was incredible, Jacques! I now have a better idea of what I could have done differently with my corn this past season. This was pretty informative for me - I'm a person just starting to grow crops at home. I'm familiar with N-P-K but this carbon layer and soil amendments for seed starts was new to me. What drew me to your channel was watching Kevin sew wheat to make flour and that's the sort of thing I want to grow to be able to do. It's really great that your channel is a bit more in-depth and it gives me a purpose with my planting. Thanks so much for starting your channel. I look forward to growing my skills to be more self sufficient at home.

There are plenty of gardening channels for short-form and quick how-to content but I appreciate the more in-depth guide you provided here. As a beginner sometimes I want to see *all* of the steps because I might have never done it before or, not known the proper way to do something.
I appreciated the pacing of the video being a little slower because it felt like, well, gardening!
That is fantastic to hear, I hope to sort of have both styles mixed in to some degree but I prefer the longer form videos like this!
Great details! I never thought of putting straw on my paths and then using that in the beds! OMG! I use cardboard on my paths and it looks terrible. It is very slippery when it gets icy, too. I saw my house on Google Earth and could see all that ugly cardboard..lol! This is a game changer for me. I knew about the other info, but most people probably don't and I would live to see people stop tilling! It is so destructive to the whole underground ecosystem. Thanks for your thorough approach.
It's funny that what we thought necessary in the past, we have found to be what not to do now. Everybody roto-tilled their gardens when I was a kid, or you got out there with a shovel and turned the soil manually.
I am very glad you got some useful details out this! Straw is wonderful stuff and really has improved my garden so much!
I have to use cardboard in my pathways to prevent weeds and slipping when the ground is wet. I get shredded bark mulch at the city yard for free, so all my paths are covered in mulch. The worms love the cardboard and the mulch breaks down over time. It's really good all the way around.

Hey Jacque don’t know if you will get this comment as I’m writing a bit late but I love the science in the videos i feel like you have a good balance of entertainment and science! I feel like dedicating some videos to science and some to entertaining and explaining would be beneficial but that’s just my 2 cents appreciate the videos!

I like the details too. I saw a couple minutes, then listened while I drove to the store. And now Im watching with all the pictures which match the talk. I only missed the fast forward bits which were well worth watching. So mix n match, some longer some shorter. Glad that you're sharing tools. Thanks for the encouragement to get out there.

1:15 I had to pull up some corn stalks to plant garlic--would have left them in the ground, cut-off, if not--and you could see the mycorrhizal fungi attached around the roots of it. Especially closer to the wood chip pathway I had put in a couple months before.
Becoming a big proponent of grass clippings for mulch as I've been doing no-till the last couple years. From what I've read you basically want a 1:1 fungal to bacteria composition in your soil, and grass clippings tend to be 1:1. It's essentially baby greens hay. Ie more nitrogen, less weed seeds, and more surface area to break down faster. And I can get paid to create my own mulch with my push mower, or at least help out my neighbors and get it for free. I cure/dry it for two days like hay usually (unless it will rain, bc I don't want the nitrogen to wash away). Seems like a really synergistic way to garden in a urban/suburban area.
Its true that we want a balance of bacteria and fungal communities in our soils most plants will have some benefit from both even if vegetables tend to have more bacterial associations. In the past I would mulch my vegetable beds with straw and pathways with wood to help provide an ecosystem for both

Hello Jacques! I love the details. You fill in the gaps, where other channels are missing explaining "why" you do a particular thing, or use a particular tool! Please continue to tell us why and quoting the research. We may be seeing tools that we do not own for the first time. I loved the explanation of why you chose to use the different forks, as well as the type of rake you used. I might add that it could be helpful to reference when you are planting in your video--such as the broccoli. As I watched (and I know I am behind, I was left wondering when you planted yours). I have also been following Kevin's channel for a couple of years. Your style and pace is more my speed. :-) Good work! Looking forward to more videos. -Kim in San Diego

if it is possible can you give some info about the vegetables that can grow in areas like the middle east and how to care for them, i am trying to grow and make my own garden from dead dry land and i can't seem to find someone that talk about the same conditions that i have specifically about shading and how often to water the plants and what plants i can grow under 40-50c and no rain most of the year

Excellent video. I like the details, it’s so important to understand why you do something instead of just being told to do it. Pace was great too. As an aside, I have a friend who doesn’t like TH-cam videos. Every so often I will send her one on gardening and she always says thanks but didn’t really like it, for whatever reason. I sent her two of yours last week and was amazed when she called me and said she “really liked those videos”. She never likes any! Then she started talking about things you said and things she was going to try and explaining why etc. well done Jacques!
Great video bro. The thorough attention to detail was spot on and I wish to see more extensive videos like this! Nothing i would change about it but I would love to see a few videos on container gardening for all us urban gardeners with very much limited space. Pushing the limits on what can be grown in a container has always been a goal of mine and would love to see your take on it. Keep on growing and continue to educate the youth 🌱☀️

This was such an excellent video. Even here, from New England. We don't flip a lot of beds, but we do flip some. And as a relatively new gardener, I struggle with flipping, cover crops, etc. Anyway, thank you.

Love love love the experiment with the fungally dominated compost. Please do an update video when you get results. I would also like to see a similar type of experiment where you compare plant growth with living groundcover vs traditional groundcover like straw mulch.
Living mulch is something I would like to try, I need to find the right plant for my area that works with the way I like to work first!

As a new gardener I liked your detailed explanation of what your doing and why. Many people will say if you want your plant to thrive do this, but then they don't say why. I got this batch of compost from SPV Soils in north county, specifically the Nitro Blend has some manure nutrients but is balanced by green compost to not be too intense.
