This drama is so sad. The Crown Prince destroys her family, says he'll do anything to keep her from leaving him, then has all these concubines that he treats better than her. You really have to marvel at how anyone survived.

I forced myself to rewatch to better understand LCY post river of Oblivion. I can't find a thread of love as he said only after he purged that bloody river water and old memories returned. He was more of a tyrant and I hated and blamed his General Pei for not telling LCY what had happened and that Gu was him. But then that wouldn't follow the novel. Any sane person would hate someone that kill your family and blatantly flaunt his concubine. You need to watch Jun Jiu Ling to appreciate a better role for the FL.

The concubine had the audacity to accept anything from the crown prince and not thinking that they will questioned and etc. The ending of this drama is satifying because he gets what he deserved, and the crown princess had a sad life because her husband (The crown prince) Killed everyone she loved/care about and at the end he was about to go to war with her brother. So, she killed herself to stop the war. Also, the concubine confesses her love to the crown prince, but the crown prince never loved her.
It was her brother who initiated the war. The Li empire was avoiding to attack Xi State because of Xiaofeng. She tried to stop his brother but out of ego and pride he push trhough with the war. Of course the Lis wont back down
Crappy ending. In the end, she dies after losing everything and living in misery and despair. Meanwhile, he's over here living with his harem. It makes you wonder if the people that write these have daughters and how they would feel if that was their daughter
I wonder why people get married if they cannot be faithful to just one person? If I know there is the slightest chance that I may cheat or stray at anytime in my life, then I refuse to get married. This guy is sick for treating his wife like this. I wish they can just divorce.
You know my former husband was just saying that he realizes that he's not cut out for marriage. After our divorced he remarried and they are both cheating on each other.
As sad as the story, it tallies with the era. The wrong thing is he wanted the power as much as he loves her so he had to do the things he did to keep her safe, though he could have kept her in the loop, but how treacherous the palace is, he couldn’t do much different if he wanted what he did exactly what he did. Given the amount of Chinese dramas where side chicks are just delusional to get the affection of the guy when he doesn't even give a damn, the chicks actually go really vile and cruel with female characters. Here however Sese indeed was made to think that was the true love of the dude by non other than the boy himself. If we didn't know Xiao Feng and Cheng Yin's past then Sese was definitely the female lead material, someone who came in the palace because of love, being made target of everyone's hate (according to her even Xiao Feng who's the official wife) and her family being the biggest support of the rise of the prince. All along she was indeed used, even the schemes she played she did because she thought she was doing these things for survival and love (again what she was made to think by her family and Cheng Yin himself). While his character has many flaws, here it seems he's trying to protect her. He literally said to put the blame on him and really sort of "accidentally" admitted to it himself. Unless I'm interpreting the translation incorrectly
I could only watch this drama once. It's too sad but if I am not mistaken, he only loved his wife. He used his concubine as a shield against the Empress. I feel so bad for the concubine though,she really did love him. You see how the Empress only punished the concubine? Yes, she broke the rules of propriety,as a concubine, she wasn't supposed to be there as it was more like a family event kinda thing and concubines are technically not part of the royal family. That's why the Princess Consort can call the Empress as Mother but the concubine has to address her as Empress or Your Majesty. He directed his affections to the concubine so that his mother would hate her for "bewitching" him. The Empress believed he really loved her and wanted to keep her on a leash. This way, his wife could live a somewhat "free" life. It must be painful though having to pretend and he did that for years.

Torture you constantly but want you to only see them. He couldn't understand why she didn't just let it go after watching him kill her grandfather. He told her you have to understand I had to do it so don't blame me I still love you. It was all political and not my fault. That's why she jumped into the river of Oblivion because she was so devastated at what he had done. He planned it all ahead of time and that's why he came back and got close to her so he could find the tribe and capture her hoping to become the new crown prince.
Okay the chase scenes where they legit go out of their way to jump over stuff or run into people are slowly be oming untolerable for me to watch. Like I don't know to laugh or rage over it.
It’s very worth it but very painful and has a tragic ending. If you don’t like tragic endings in dramas then you should avoid. It’s a beautiful drama and very realistic when it came to the history of China.

I just watched some clips of this drama and there are times when I love the ml character and there are times when i hate him. But there are things I realized: the actor is really good. he was able to portray his character well, I hate the writer😂😂😂✌️why had he made him like that, and i'm sad for the actor. Some viewers might have hated the ML that they even hated the actor himself. This happens sometimes
This show is so twisted, the empress usually sides with the female villain to get rid of the female lead and the male lead would eventually fall in love with the female lead in the end. But we all know his love for her was fake and there was no way they’d be together after he killed her family.. so sad the ending made me cry
Man I remember watching this and hating him so much, and that had never happened. Yes I dislike many male leads in Asian dramas mostly they portray douchebags. But this was a extreme hate towards the ML. But when I comment that I was attacked with YOU JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND HIM! They cover his s*it with honey. Sorry but no, yes most times than not he tried to “do it for her”but it was so bad what he did (kill so many of her love ones, degrade her, slap her, etc etc) that it couldn’t be excused.
Worst ML for me was Korean version of “Playful Kiss.” ML treated the FL horrible all through the drama. He treated the SFL much better even after the ML and FL got married. He continued that relationship still. Turned my stomach. Can’t watch it a second time.

"The longest day in chang'an" is also a reference I have for the costumes and makeup. The makeup the empress wears always confused me and it's terrifying if you ask me.

The crown prince is a greedy man. And that mistress is obsessed with him and all the power that come with it. He tried his wife with hatred and claimed that he was protecting her. In my opinion he never love her

While his character has many flaws, here it seems he's trying to protect her. He literally said to put the blame on him and really sort of "accidentally" admitted to it himself. Unless I'm interpreting the translation incorrectly

I could only watch this drama once. It's too sad but if I am not mistaken, he only loved his wife. He used his concubine as a shield against the Empress. I feel so bad for the concubine though,she really did love him. You see how the Empress only punished the concubine? Yes, she broke the rules of propriety,as a concubine, she wasn't supposed to be there as it was more like a family event kinda thing and concubines are technically not part of the royal family. That's why the Princess Consort can call the Empress as Mother but the concubine has to address her as Empress or Your Majesty. He directed his affections to the concubine so that his mother would hate her for "bewitching" him. The Empress believed he really loved her and wanted to keep her on a leash. This way, his wife could live a somewhat "free" life. It must be painful though having to pretend and he did that for years.

Torture you constantly but want you to only see them. He couldn't understand why she didn't just let it go after watching him kill her grandfather. He told her you have to understand I had to do it so don't blame me I still love you. It was all political and not my fault. That's why she jumped into the river of Oblivion because she was so devastated at what he had done. He planned it all ahead of time and that's why he came back and got close to her so he could find the tribe and capture her hoping to become the new crown prince.
Okay the chase scenes where they legit go out of their way to jump over stuff or run into people are slowly be oming untolerable for me to watch. Like I don't know to laugh or rage over it.

But there are things I realized: the actor is really good. he was able to portray his character well, I hate the writer😂😂😂✌️why had he made him like that, and i'm sad for the actor. Man I remember watching this and hating him so much, and that had never happened. Yes I dislike many male leads in Asian dramas mostly they portray douchebags.
But this was a extreme hate towards the ML.
But when I comment that I was attacked with YOU JUST DON’T UNDERSTAND HIM! They cover his s*it with honey.
Sorry but no, yes most times than not he tried to “do it for her”but it was so bad what he did (kill so many of her love ones, degrade her, slap her, etc etc) that it couldn’t be excused.
Worst ML for me was Korean version of “Playful Kiss.” ML treated the FL horrible all through the drama. He treated the SFL much better even after the ML and FL got married. He continued that relationship still. Turned my stomach. Can’t watch it a second time.
