    Very well done taking on a tough kit like that especially the ropey decals and fit issues. The metallic paint finish is excellent as is the detail work. A great looking early B17, with excellent video compilation and presentation.

    HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!
    Many thanks for the video, it was very good and interesting too. I like in box review before the build of this lovely plane. I have always liked the B-17, but I don't remember seeing this version before. I like watching other people building as I am still relatively new to modelling and so to see how others build is very helpful and I pick up lots of tips and tricks. Many thanks for sharing this video with us and have fun on your next project,
    Joe

      No, problem! I have a 1/72 B-17C, another early version, with decals of a squadron based in the Philippines when war broke out in the Pacific. I cant wait to get it finished. :)

    There is a D model of this kit in olive drab, that kit builds into the 'Swoose', the only surviving Fortress with the early tail.

    Underside of the left wing I believe that the BB decal is upside down and the star is not properly oriented.

    • @TheWaggishAmerican
      @TheWaggishAmerican  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Wash star is aligned according to the painting guide, with the the single point forward and following the center line I saw did perpendicular to the leading edge. I’d have to find the guide to tell us I messed up the BB or not

    You wouldn't recommend this kit? I built this kit many, many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't recall any fit issues and the decals back then were far superior to what was in use with most "kits" of the day. Because they were so thin, albeit delicate, they looked awesome compared to most kit decals back then. What struck me the most about the Academy B-17 kits is that they offered every possible version you could think of from the original model 299, the British variants up to search search and rescue except maybe the Fire bombers but i wouldn't be surprised if they had that.
    Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed the video and your B-17 turned out beautiful! I personally would recommend this kit to anyone from beginner to master especially since no one else offers this version of the B-17. This kit is wide open for scratch detail or right out of the box. The modelers imagination is the limit with this basic kit. I'm glad they are still around in 2021. I just got the B-17F from Hobby Lobby for $24.00 after 40% off and the Airfix USAAF Bomber resupply set reduced price for $8.00. Happy building!
    I may have been mistaken about the original model 299. I can find no reference to it in google search but i thought i saw one once. Sorry about that!

    Probably one of the hardest model versions of the b17 to find I've only seen two in the 35 years I've been alive and really wish I would have bought one when I had the chance absolutely my favorite version of the b17

      +aircraft99 Thanks! It is actually kind of depressing about the radio operators room- the glass is so bad you can barely see it now.

    Wow you totally nailed those rudder stripes! Not an easy thing to do as my many attempts testify.
    I liked the bit about using white glue to secure clear parts. That's a little trick I wish more knew about.
    Thank you for another great video!

    • @TheWaggishAmerican
      @TheWaggishAmerican  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another tip about clear parts- white glue is good, but this stuff called “Micro Krystal Klear” is basically super white glue. It dries so clear, I and others use it to actually make windows that are BETTER than kit parts!

    • @TheWaggishAmerican
      @TheWaggishAmerican  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any white glue will work- I use Micro Crystal Clear, since it can be used to make glass windows if you need it. But normal Elmer’s glue works just fine as well

    A very nice build and your videos are instructive and fun to watch. The tail colours worked out well, except....thirteen stripes is the correct number. Thirteen. I wonder why? ;0)

    Instead of handbrushing the NATO black you could airbrush the whole thing, then paint the rims with silver paint and a fine brush. Great video by the way!

    Kid - nice builds except for most of the music blame it on need for better friends. Also - as you express the "unfortunate' bits that enter your life (I built models at about half your age when there were 2 companies - Monogram and Revell) good golly you are good but instead of complaining about the crap fits just pull out your clamps and utilize the experience for teaching. Scratch builds are fantastic. Right now there are about fifty people who will be rummaging through trash receptacles for their daily bread within one long square block from where I type. Hence my need to keep builds in perspective. You live the "charmed" life - might as well celebrate.
