You may disagree with Harris on issues but she, thankfully is none of those things. No, Frank Lunz, I don't care for you and I certainly don't agree with your political position
Came into this tepid on frank lunch, but had to stop after 20 mins. After non-stop personal anecdotes, as soon as he gets an interesting question about his historic and present positions and why he's changed, he suddenly "doesn't talk about himself". No, cus then he'd have to be accountable for his nebulous, but weirdly overly melodramatic positions and how it influences his polling work. Cheap trick trying to butter up Alastair, at which point he lost all British viewers. Even Northern Ireland.
Reminded me of something. About 20 years ago where I worked we would have staff conferences. I was a middle manager and attended various ones. They were all deathly dull and largely consisted of people reading out loud what was already behind them on PowerPoint. We had a new chief executive who had come in from outside and people were very wary of this - that he wouldn’t understand our issues, didn’t know our culture, what was his agenda, etc. So, he was introduced at one of these conferences with his name on power point and we all settled in to be mildly hostile/bored. But he never used PowerPoint or read from notes, moved to the front of the stage and just spoke confidently for 45 minutes. This doesn’t sound like much of anything but in context it was almost mind blowing. So, I think I get the Cameron story that within the context of political speeches someone just speaking directly is often a breath of fresh air. Tomorrow we have the ten minute speeches by the Tory party leadership hopefuls and I will be watching and if one of them has an ounce of the charisma of Cameron or my old chief exec I’ll be absolutely bloody amazed.
I find Luntz’s focus group segments to be some of the most interesting and illuminating out there, but I have zero patience for his crisis of conscience bullshit over how he will vote. Ridiculous man. Interested in the game and the celebrity. Not a care for actual policy or reality. Throwing out so many unsubstantiated generalisations. It’s the narrative that we need to return to some mythic centre ground and that will solve all of our issues and ignores reality.
I'm currently listening to the podcast, and my first impression is that we're discussing a significant shift in how polls are interpreted. Luntz, much like Lichtman, seems to be approaching this from a completely different perspective. It seems like we need to adjust our thinking based on what's being discussed.
The best pollsters have come to realise that what makes or breaks a polling model are the baseline assumptions used in their construction. These assumptions are fundamentally qualatative not quantatative, Lichtman has his keys, Luntz seems to take great stock in sentiment he gleams from focus groups. Whichever model predicts an election most accurately was decided at the beggining of the process, when the underlying mechanisms were decided, no matter how much data or how accurate the data that gets plugged in, it ultimately comes down to how it is interpreted.
Absolute whiplash entering the comments here… I actually found this to be quite a refreshing, interesting conversation. I’m not familiar with Luntz’s body of work but I found him passionate, authentic, conscientious. He acknowledges at one point how British people rarely speak praise of their politicians and I think this is broadly true in the US and of the commentariat everywhere. Watching from Australia as an outsider, he truly comes off as someone centre-right as he says. He also seems to embody much of what he learns and hears from his focus groups > if the US voting population was mushed into one, single talking meat-bag of a person.. and this person was asked who they’d vote for - I suspect that person would give an answer similar to the one Luntz gave.
Loved it. Vive la difference. It was worth it just to know that there is someone like him out there and influencing others with his particular mindset. Just think about the hundreds or thousands of others out there, we don't know about. Fascinating stuff lads. Let's have a few more.
Frank Luntz feels almost indistinguishable from someone lile Lex Friedman. Someone whose policy positions feels almost tangential to the overall optics and aesthetic. Someone who says he has issues with the major politicians but leans very much in a particular direction. It makes it hard to take them seriously when they lean in a direction and can make a case for certain policies but are hesitant to stake a position on it. This is why I feel like there is some missed opportunities to dig deeper in some parts.

I am halfway through, and I am still getting the same vibes I got when I was a few minutes into this video; The guy strikes me as used car salesman. Willing to bend and manipulate opinions, speech and facts to get his way. Also, for a great listener... Around 21 minute mark he says something along the following. "I have probably done more focus groups than any living human being. Moderated them. And I have the scars to prove it. I used to yell in these focus groups because I'd say "Answer! Tell me the truth! You are telling me what you want Americans to hear, I want to know what you really think" While I have no knowledge of how polling ought to be done, I am not sure yelling at them, when they say something you don't want to hear, is the best way to go about getting a 'real' answer. The fact that he boasts to have moderated more focus groups than anyone else working today is worrying.
I appreciate the level of nuance and measured debate Rory and Alastair encourage and getting to understand complicated people with complex opinions. Not this time, though, this guy is ridiculous. The level of un-self-awareness is genuinely awe-inspiring.

Interesting interview 😳 Mr. Luntz is very heavy weather. As much as I (and many others) admire Alastair, Luntz was well over the top in praise of both Alastair and Tony Blair. Deeply uncomfortable 🥴 Is Mr. Luntz really as good a pollster as some would have us believe???
For those reacting to his weirdness: Luntz had a series of strokes and is aware that he might die soon. So, he is trying to be really clear with things he wants to get across. I think he really wants Alistair to know how much he admires his work. Luntz is a manipulative jerk, but he is seeing death approaching and he wants to make a point.
Frank is trying to express his professional view in an honest way, that's all. I hear a man who's trying to put it all together, at least he's trying, and we can't fault him for that. He's had a few strokes from having to see, in all it's form, ugly truths in this country and the Republican demise. I congratulate him for surviving political lies, even if some were his own. He had a job to do, and it's almost killed him. Frank is a survivor. I applaud that he didn't work with Trump!!
I think he's threatened by Rory's intellect; he's an idea that his particular brand of drama -his USP essentially-on their show would be cool ... a profound misjudgement.
It's funny. I see Harris as a very centrist candidate. She has in the past shown to be have a progressive streak. But I think seeing Biden in action, creating consensus, has moved her more to the center where she thinks she can get more done. There are some money to interests involved as well. The word that popped into my mind when I was thinking about the convention was opportunity. If we are looking at statistics that matter, let's look at economic mobility. I think we find that the USA has lost that strength. More people than ever are worse off or the same as their parents. And I don't think that's the liberal agenda at play, I see that as corporations running amok And the tax code favoring the wealthy over the poor. We see the influence of money and politics ever, expanding, and those at the top have the money to influence. Poor people just don't have lobbying the way the wealthy do.

You are telling me what you want Americans to hear, I want to know what you really think"
While I have no knowledge of how polling ought to be done, I am not sure yelling at them, when they say something you don't want to hear, is the best way to go about getting a 'real' answer. The fact that he boasts to have moderated more focus groups than anyone else working today is worrying.
"... even Northern Ireland" ...? His credibility went down the toilet somewhat with that sniveling intro. Have some self respect man.
Frank is annoying but my ears perked up when he said don’t call them working class address them as people living from paycheck to paycheck
Yeah I liked that
Everyone in America is referred to as middle class, odd . Since when has being working class derogatory?
@@jillal-fuhaid1763it is to Americans who all aspire to be rich + have the trappings of being rich. A society built on materialism.
I made it just over 3 mins. I'm sorry. Frank Luntz can run a good focus group, but during interviews he's insufferable.
So funny to witness Alastair listening to a guest without any interruption whatsoever. Ha ha ha!
Great interview. Good points, and talks without BS.
I appreciate the level of nuance and measured debate Rory and Alastair encourage and getting to understand complicated people with complex opinions.
Not this time, though, this guy is ridiculous. The level of un-self-awareness is genuinely awe-inspiring.
I've just started watching. Good lord!!
do you suppose mr brainiac 🙄 has nothing to say about trumps many convictions, including sexual assault...or is that just a side note for the guy who admits to no social life...poor guy...boggles his brilliant mind I suppose
My immediate take is dude sounds like Donald Trump
Frank Luntz philosophy is Alone I can Fix it vs. It Takes a Village and Together we are strong
how to get in to government and keep power....tell them what they want to hear....then keep the wealth where it is.....
You can sell a lie to the American people, they love that stuff.
As if people in the UK don't.
Ive met Frank, and generally liked him. But if you dont know that you will vote for Harris over Trump you do not value truth at all.
Outstanding
For those reacting to his weirdness: Luntz had a series of strokes and is aware that he might die soon. So, he is trying to be really clear with things he wants to get across. I think he really wants Alistair to know how much he admires his work. Luntz is a manipulative jerk, but he is seeing death approaching and he wants to make a point.
I prefer leaders to do a function well, not necessarily be likeable. Arguably, Brown saved the global financial system (for good or bad).
I can't believe I listened to 38 minutes of this, what a muppet I am
Fascinating.
Clinton's domestic peace corps program, americorps had a section that focused on IT work. It gave me my career. I'll never not be thankful for that.
Thank you gentlemen that was a fascinating episode.
Chris hedges, mearshimer, Jeff sachs, Glenn greenwald - these would be very interesting interviews
The comments have made me feel a wee bit better haha it just wasn't me being cranky!
Exactly!
Loved this as always , thanks chaps 💙
My response to everything he said in this interview:
"Okay............"
I didn't know the words "prolific" and "pollster" collocated.
Fascinating interview and an interesting individual. I appreciate interviews from both left and right of center.
Why would you give this man your airtime???
something was off with Frank here....what happened? He is usually a great interviewee. Maybe some anxiety? idk
Trump tells people what they already believe. He confirms their beliefs and suspicions. THAT'S his magic.
When Are you getting Professor Alan Lichtman on?
When was this recorded?
I'm hoping Alistair didn't quite expect this when booking..
I... don't like this guy.
This guy... hates Rory
I think he's threatened by Rory's intellect; he's an idea that his particular brand of drama -his USP essentially-on their show would be cool ... a profound misjudgement.
First episode of Leading I literally couldn't even finish. This guy is ridiculous, why would they have him on the show?
This guy is just all over the place. He’s completely muddled in the head. As an American, I’m kind of embarrassed.
Goodness! The love.
I enjoyed that discussion insightful and moving. Shouldn't have had him walking up steps though.
What’s really sad is that after this interview Frank will be reading all these comments !
This was recorded too long ago.
He now says Harris will win.
