    Just recently I went to Barcelona to film a new “How I Shoot” episode for the Season 3 that will come later this year. But there was a problem with the film rolls that I brought with me on that trip. Most of the photos that I shot in Barcelona are pretty much unusable which is a shame. I wanted to delete all the footage from Barcelona but then I thought maybe you might be interested to watch it anyways. I could kind of rescue some of the photos with some heavy post-processing.
    While I was there, I picked up a flash and for the video I wanted to use it out on the streets. In front of the flash, I put a CTO gel to compensate for the tungsten film that I was shooting. Because of the issue with the film, I will give it another shot in a future video.
    In this video, you can see my friend Shao shooting an M6 with the same film and using the flash too.

    Hope you enjoy the episode, see you in the next video! :)

      The result would have been the same! Like I mentioned in the video, the film had been exposed to light and happened before I even shot it.

    The fun part for us is, looking at you having a good time, big smile on your face, shooting, and we can look at the results, and again watching you smile in the video, with ho idea of what's coming.

    Even though the film was messed up, the real value was being able to watch you work from a 3rd person pov and a lot of us are curious how you handle the reactions of your subjects to the flash. Enjoyed this one and it didn't even matter much what the final photos looked like in the end.

    I too got 8 rolls of Silbersalz 35mm film (tungsten and daylight in several speeds), and 4 of them came back completely blank and the other 4 were barely salvageable. Silbersalz insisted that there must be something wrong with my camera, despite the fact I metered every shot perfectly and had no issues shooting Kodak and Cinestill films in the same photoshoots. What a total waste of money (a LOT of money) and time. 😭

    Man, what a huge bummer... Live and learn though, hahaha. I love Bruce Gilden's work, but I just can't get around the idea of using a flash for street. Not for any philosophical reason, just not my kind of aesthetic. I was partially hoping this would change my mind and help me step into new territory, but apparently not this time, hahaha. Thanks for an honest share on the experiment. It would have been "easy" to discard the video as failed footage, but it was really nice to see the whole thing.

    Well normally I really enjoy your videos, however this one seems very creepy and not professional in anyway. Street photography can always be challenging and of course many different approaches can be used. But running up to someone and putting your camera and flash right in there face, snapping the photo and darting off is seriously a terrible method in my book.

    • @therealsirrobin
      @therealsirrobin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can like it or not but it is not becoming creepy or terrible just because it is out of your comfort zone. I know some photographers that use flash a lot and you'd be surprised how little problems they run into because of that. If done in a non confrontational way I don't see any problem with using flash in street photography. As you can see in the video, no one freaks out or reacts in a negative way. It was rather the opposite, people seemed to find it amusing.

    • @tan898
      @tan898 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the_real_sir_robin Actually I completely agree and disagree with that statement Flash photography can definitely be used in street photography for sure so that I agree with, however your statement of a “non confrontational way” and “no one freaks out” is kinda bogus because you basically ran away very fast from your subjects so they really did not have time to react to you “click and run” style.

    • @youngalwyn1124
      @youngalwyn1124 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      tan898 - I agree 101% . It is time that photographers and concerned citizens open a dialog on public photography and the behavior of photographers pursuing their craft. This would be a social rather than a legal discussion, but nevertheless it ought to lead to an elevated and widely understood “code of conduct” for photographers who operate in public places. Please message me privately if you wish to collaborate on this initiative.
