    People are so mad at me for saying they are stingy to reuse the boxes. I was only joking. My whole channel is about repairing old tech and giving it a new lease of life... Do you really think I am anti-recycle? Come on now...
    I also accidently called it an SP.. which obviously, it is not. I was just very excited and got a few words mixed up.

      @@TheRetroFuture I mean think about it, the stuff like membranes and buttons are sold to them at commodity prices, and OEM quality. They pay pennies on the dollar for it. They have a plethora of them. The most expensive thing is the board. Apple does the same thing with their refurbs. Essentially brand new but with a cleaned/inspected board.

    • @suemason

    For some insight to nintendo repairs, I had 2-3 separate DS light consoles from 2006- early 2008 when released. Each time the device had a minor issue and was sent into nintendo and I'd receive a completely new DSLite in whatever box I sent in to them. It was pretty common that many of these were not the same you got back even with the DS! I'm surprised I remember honestly

    Elliott, this is the perfect occasion for me to ask you : Would you be able to tell me which way is the flat spot on the D-pad facing on this particular unit? Given this is technically brand new I would be really interested in knowing that... I can't really tell from the outside even though it's a clear shell. To be more specific, there's a (slight) flat spot on the circular part of the D-pad (the plastic disc serving as a base for the cross) and it can be facing 4 ways (either one of the 4 corners). I'm trying to refurbish my original childhood GBA and would love to put it back the "factory" way even if it's a small detail. Thanks a million!!!

    I got a refurbished galaxy new 3DS XL from GameStop and the thing was literally like brand new. There was nothing on the screens and there were no scratches or scrapes anywhere on the console. I've noticed that the hinges on the ones i had before would get scraped so easily but the hinges on this one were (and still are) untouched (well, there are no black spots on them). I can't remember if the repair was through Nintendo but whoever repaired it did a damn great job. It was like getting a brand new, never before used console right out of the box.
    Before I got my galaxy 3DS, I got a refurbished red new 3DS XL and when I opened it, there was this glue-like residue on the edges of the screen so I returned that one. Later on, I got a refurbished black new 3DS XL from GameStop and that one was scratched all over and the hinges were scraped but I bought it anyway. About a year later, it started having trouble reading games. Also, it was getting a little difficult to put the games in it like soda or something was spilled on it and the reader was all sticky. I never let any liquid touch that thing and I never let anyone even touch it without my supervision. I've had this galaxy 3DS for over two years and I have not had one problem with it. I've heard bad things about GameStop refurbished consoles so either Nintendo repaired my galaxy 3DS or I got very lucky. Idk but I am very happy with the one I got.

    I did some research and found out that Nintendo would supposedly swap the defective item that they would receive from a customer and instead ship them back a new one labeling it as "Serviced Product", The defective device that would become refurbished later on would be sold online through the website. Theres one on eBay just like this glacier one complete with everything and the description on the box label saying kit, power swap advance indigo agb for the indigo color gameboy advance Its going for $299.99. its pretty amazing and neat to have in a collection defiantly dude. You should make more videos buying serviced Nintendo products online for other Gameboys or NES

    Nintendo, like many other businesses, has a mix of both repair parts and replacement units to facilitate quick turnaround on repairs. On top of this, it isn't uncommon for devices to be sent back to the manufacturer after a single use. So a device like that can be considered "refurbished", even though it never needed repairs. So simply put, it is how it is because it's good for business.

    Maybe it was a brand new unit that was sold and had a faulty screen then it was returned and sent back to be repaired. That would explain why its in such good shape.

  • @TechHug

    If Nintendo handled things back then the same way they do now, the refub was likely a returned unit.

    I think it's surprising Nintendo actually did refurbished this Gameboy Advanced. But as I was thinking while I was watching the video btw this is only the Nintendo Repair center but what if, what if there is a possibility that Nintendo could possibly make a Gameboy classic edition. Now even though there are Gameboy emulator consoles out there already but if Nintendo did officially did make one themselves.Then it would be worth the wait and I’d most definitely buy it.

    It reminds me of when there was a recall on my Nvidia Shield tablet because there was a risk with the battery. I though they would send me a box that I would use to ship my tablet and they would swap the battery for a new one... nope. A week after I filled the recall info I received a brand new tablet. Nvidia had a kill switch installed in an update that disabled the old tablet once you activated the new one but I was still surprised that they just sent new tablets instead of fixing the old ones.

    Can’t speak to Nintendo’s standards at this timeframe, but Apple refurbished products receive brand new cases and batteries, anything you can touch without disassembling is new, right off the factory. Wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo was at least very generous in new casing parts in order to get a second chance at selling a motherboard. But of course, the battery contacts are actually soldered onto the motherboard, so unless the refurb process bothered to replace those you may be right it’s a new unit.

    I would guess that if Nintendo were to refurbish a GBA that the majority of the system would be new and just the board is reused. Ostensibly, that makes the system practically new, but I'm sure replacing the entire shell and components was the cheapest way to recycle the hardware.

    Talking about boxes, when my OG Xbox went up the wall, I sent it as required to Microsoft who refused to repair it claiming a screw "had been tampered with" and it was a tiny fleck of paint seemed to be missing on an external screw, they sent it back missing all the leads I was told to include AND it came back in a brown cardboard box and this was a special edition OG Xbox in the green crystal case and I went to war with 'em over that and at the time I was a prolific webmaster and some of the insane and nasty websites I spawned musta cost MS a fair packet in lost sales and one day the door goes and unasked for was a standard new Xbox so the message got thru to 'em I was seriously pi$$ed. Think the funniest was Bill the "toilet lurker" a sordid series of blog entries of ahem extremely questionable humour and what disgusting things were being done to innocent Xbox's sent in for repair but fairs fair, I killed the sites and started making funny ones about Tony Blair...

Typically we disassembled, conduct visual inspection, replace any scratched/damaged parts (always a new screen cover), reassemble and inspect with test cart. Most parts were reused if there was no visible wear or damage, a lot of returns were only due to flat batteries anyway.

    I've bought several refurbished items from NoA, and they have all looked like this, as the only issue is you don't get standard packaging. I believe most of these so called "refurbished" units, or buy backs, or just systems that couldn't be sold for some reason, and they end up as refurbs. I've seen no signs of use, having been opened, or otherwise and that's been for handhelds, as well as consoles.

      @TheRetroFuture  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Interesting to hear! Did they ever repair anything? Or just replace!

    • @chrislaustin
      @chrislaustin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheRetroFuture Actually, I just bought from them under their "refurbished" section in their online store, and they always arrived in new condition. I've been buying "N" stuff since the G&W days, and I've never had to send anything in for service or warranty work, so can't comment on that side of their business. But as far as buying refurbished goes, it's always been "new", at least from what I could tell.

      chrislaustin have you checked if theres like 1 dead pixel or something? Sony didn't consider a psp returnable unless it had like 5+ but I can imagine Nintendo being far more strict

    • @ArtumTsumia
      @ArtumTsumia 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Considering a quick glance at Nintendo's site shows they have a surprising amount of refurbished units, I can only assume a good chunk of them are stock that was simply returned for some reason such as packaging damage. Stuff that stores just didn't want to bother trying to sell. Ostensibly returns or exchanges might fall into that category as well. Everyone else I assume sends a unit in for Nintendo to repair, so there wouldn't be as much inventory to go around due to something like that.

      and if it’s dead, take the metals out. Technology products contain metals like aluminium and copper, and precious metals like gold which have some small value, better to recover and store them than to let them go straight to landfill.

    At-least the GBA doesn't have any tabs or anything to wear down or degrade by opening it; back did just fall off.

    I spent about $80 on a GBA a few years back, it had the AGS-101 backlight mod though and a new casing. I think it was worth it just so I didn’t have to go through the efforts of replacing the shell or the screen or anything. I have another gameboy that’s just been sitting around though that I want to fix up on my own though once I have the time, money, and equipment!
