For Janet and any others who are curious, the Grey Knights are a chapter of Space Marines founded specifically and solely to be incorruptible deamon hunters. They work side by side with the Inquisition to root out Deamonic activity. The weapons they use are very unique, their melee weapons are Nemesis Force Weapons, basically power weapons with an additional aura of psychicly charged pure holy hatred. They're ranged weapons do the same to an extent.
Don't the Grey Knights also terminate allies after battles to keep their identity secret?

@@maskone4575 Not their identity. The idea is that the presence of chaos corrupt and thus after confrontations with Daemons the Grey Knights often eutanize everyone who came near them just to root out any possible influence left behind.

Now that every Imperium citizen only has to look up at the sky to see the effects of Chaos and the warp cutting the galaxy in half - the existence of Daemons is terrifyingly common knowledge now. Hence keeping the existence of Daemonhunters a secret isn't necessary.

actually it's even stupider than that they can call what he was wearing terminator armor but the size of it is that of a dreadnaught which he honestly needs because in the ending of retribution when Diomedes picks up his body all you can see is an arm and torso.

I like how the names are references to the Morte d'Arthur: Agravain, Palamedes, even Ectar if you think of him as Ector. Makes it all feel a little more ... "knightly?"

The Nathesiun (marine medical tool) works as a weapon because it needs to be able to slice open the Astarte armor so they can operate. A weapon needed just to treat the battle brother.

The inquisition does not have power over the Grey Knights. They make requests not demands.
That tutorial ended with 90% casualties rate victory. Just as warhammer is supposed to be like

Astartes are actually protected from requisition even from an Inquisitors, they need to be persuaded that campaigns are worth fighting for before they will fight.
Grey Knights are the Ordo Malleus of the Inquisition. Ergo, Inquisitors *can* requisition Grey Knight vessels... if they know the Ordo Malleus exists.
This is why the commander had to die in order for this plot to work. A provisional commander has no such protection.

38:55 The first strike ability paired with a long range attack that inflicts the Enraged condition (that forces the afflicted enemy to attack you in melee on its next turn) is really, _really_ good. Especially if you have a melee weapon with knockback. 👌

The Missions are there.
The timepressure is there.
The ship/base upgrades with limited resources
The research is there.
And you do fight against inhuman treaths
It is more X-COM 2 with unique mechanics, but definitely not just something using the combat mechanics.

I wonder if we'll get a Tzeentch and possibly Khorne (Codex World Eaters just got announced) DLC at some point. The changer of ways already has a significant range of models thanks to Codex: Thousand Sons (in addition to his Daemons ofc).
I was thinking along those lines as well. This game allows them to DLC or expansion in the other Chaos forces. I could dream of getting other chapters or races but that is a big ask.
I love the touch of how you're meant to find unique bits and pieces of armor and weaponry for upgrades as you play through.

I don't even like Grey Knights or the Imperium generally but this looks really cool.
Fun fact: the Mars Machine God has been heavily implied to be a Necron C'tan, and they might've been worshipping it before the Imperium existed with even the faintest suggestion amongst Imperials or AdMechs that they might be worshipping or have worshipped something other than an aspect of the Emperor being grounds for an immediate blamming.
Ectar might be a null/blank/pariah, going by what he says - someone with a gene that makes them invisible to the warp and unable to use it, essentially an anti-psycher. This would obviously prevent him doing any of the battlefield psy stuff Grey Knights do. For a bonus fact of the day, old Necron 3rd edition lore (~2001-9) before their big Tomb Kingsian rework had them sometimes kidnapping pariahs to turn into their own special Pariah elite who were basically Cybermen as the C'tan's experimental final end goal for biological life - very tanky but couldn't selfrepair. Necron Pariahs got axed with the big rework though in 5th edition.
I mean, it's a pretty great deal for the Void Dragon, having a major component of the human religion dedicated to it and not being used as a pokemon like those in the Necrons' grasp. I figure it's a reliable power to have on your side. :P

I find the art style is pretty on point with how much units look like the miniatures and the maps look like custom built table maps. Mechanically it is damn cool I just wish the bolters were more explosive and the death animations a bit more satisfying and varied. I am having a blast watching playthroughs especially from Xcom vets who play the micro moves overwatch spam and suddenly the warp surges are out of control.

You should check out the original Chaos Gate. It is somewhat dated but still exceptional.

Watching this and thinking about customization, I wonder if the Deathwatch would have been a better fit. Pulling from all chapters would have allowed for more personalization of each marine, plus the Deathwatch has a bunch of fun little tools too.
They absolutely would have been a better fit.
From the looks of it, it feels like the developers either have a very skin deep knowledge of 40K lore, in which case just "regular Space Marines" would have been a lot easier to work with, or they're quite content to overlook or ignore a lot of things, just to make a shippable product.
Either way, it's a massive discredit to the really cool lore around the Grey Knights, which just leaves a bad taste in the mouth for me.
I suppose the reason they couldn't choose the Deathwatch was that they're part of the Ordos Xenos, rather than the Ordos Malleus, so it wouldn't fit the game's antagonists being daemons.
Agreed. While I DO like the Grey Knights, I feel like the Deathwatch would have been more interesting
@@tomfahey2823 From what time we've seen of the game so far, you could substitute in Genestealer Cults and the campaign mechanics would be the same. Hopefully this game will do well enough for them to consider something like that. (Not that I dislike the game we got, it's just that it feels like it could have been more)
Especially recruiting new soldiers.
Since GN take decades to train, would have been easier with deathwatch which can simply draw on existing recruits from multiple chapters.

One thing I'd love to see implemented in games like this is an editable movie replay of a mission/level, ala GTA.
I felt it was missing and would make for a cool look back over what you did, allow you to make little movie montages of the actions of your greatest soldiers, etc

I’m not a huge fan of the Telltale-style facial graphics but I do love more 40k content
I actually found it a little jarring in the first couple of cutscenes but it soon grows on you :)

I really wish this wasn't Grey Knights. The squad-level combat and progression stuff seems like it would be perfect for a Gorkamorka/Mordheim/Necromunda-style game, or even just a game like this but with any other faction (or selection of factions), and instead it's just yet another game for Special Shiny Boys in Power Armour.
Very excited for this game, the Magos is pretty much exactly what the books have given me too expect lol. I guess he's justified seeing as that ship is probably a few thousand years old and the technology to replace it no longer exists, still kinda dickish about it XD.

Ohh, i do so much hope the dev's make this game easily moddable. I loved playing modded X-com (2) campaigns. And i could adjust the difficulty just to my liking which is good as well...👽

ahh you cant increase skills like WS or BS like in the old Chaos gate, I loved that game, where you could make a sniper if the space marine started with a high ballistic skill etc. Can you find weapons like in the old game too? Like mastercrafted if you are lucky which is totally random etc. Is four the maximum squad size ? I would love this kinda game but with Cadian and some special heroes + Officio assasinorium.

This game seems much more friendly than xcom 2 so far.
You had the lore wrong with regard to the mechanicum. They think the Emperor is a God called the Omnissiah and they have had repeated internal conflicts over this view but the majority revere the Emperor as the Omnissiah, and that is who they are referring to with that term. The Guard revere him as the God Emperor wholly and completely lest they be deemed heretic, which is regulated and administered by the Ecclisiarchy, including sexy space nuns called Sisters of Battle. And the Loyalist Space Marines are split on the matter, most chapters do not pray to him or call him God but to seek his guidance and all their actions are in service to his last commands; however there are a few chapters like the Black Templars that revere him as holy. The Grey Knights know the truth, the Emperor is the greatest of Men, but not truly a God and millions of souls are fed to the throne to keep it working.
Gotta wait a couple days I guess, I spent way too much money last month...
just a small reminder: there is evidence from a man of iron that the Omnisiah is a separate being..... somehow :-|

I'm confused, I thought the Grey Knights could only request the Grey Knights as they're effective (at least lorewise) so far beyond every other chapter that their psychers top Librarians and they're all psychers lol. How is this Inquistor handing out orders?
The grey knights serve under the ordo malleus, which is a branch of the inquisition. They focus on killing/banishing demons. Ordo malleus inquisitors can order them to do stuff but sometimes there is some argueing between them.
Why is the Inquisitor so hot?...

Lore wise I believe the Knights, and many other chapters, pass down surnames of fallen brothers to new recruits

It is Warhammer 40k Gears Tactics far more than it is 40k XCOM though...
I'm interested in this game, even though the Daemonhunters are one of my, if not my least favorite factions in 40K.
Seeing you play it just makes it better. Here's hoping it is more like Mechanicus and less like Space Hulk.
I wouldn’t say it’s like either. Space hulk was space hulk and mechanics was fine but lacked a lot of polish. I think you’ll be pleased with this one :)

I can live with a little spelling mistake. Depending on when the footage was taken it's also possible they got feedback on stuff like this from people with early access and either fixed it with a pre-launch update or will be fixing it shortly after launch :)

Its a very decent game, but I feel the art style is a bit cartoony. 40k mechanicus had more flair, in looks and music.
Feels like there's a lot of lore butchery in this...
First of all being the story element of Grey Knights operating entirely on their own, like a regular Space Marine chapter and even being referred to as "Space Marines" by the Imperial Navy Captain - which, in itself, was entirely bizarre (since when do random Imperial Navy captains tell Space Marines Battle Barge/Strike Cruisers what to do?) - when in fact, they're just the order militant of the Ordos Malleus, so basically the standarding army of the Daemon-hunting part of the Inquisition.
Then there's the gamey stuff with the psy-bolters taking multiple shots to kill mere humans, the power sword failing to cut that guy cleanly in two, in a single strike and the Aegis "shield" - it's originally a hood - acting as some kind of general damage buffer, when it's actually a shield against psychic attacks by daemons and psykers.
Can't really blame the game developers too much when it comes to this stuff, as they've got to actually make a game that's fun at the end of the day, but it'd be nice if GW didn't dilute every single piece of the 40K lore, just for the sake of making a 40K version of "XYZ" game.
I agree with you about the combat, It is a bit silly when cultists can take a hit from a force sword or multiple bolt rounds and keep going.
I do disagree about the story elements though. Pretty sure GK have always been able to act on there own without inquisitorial oversight, this is certainly the case in the lore since codex: daemonhunters became codex: grey knights. Also given that the existence of the GK is kept a secret it also makes sense that they would appear to be “just” another Astartes chapter to other Imperial assets. It is bizarre for imperial navy captains to be giving any Astartes orders, but I thought of it more as a warning than an order given with any expectation of obedience.
to bad the voice acting, the dialogue and music are all lacking in comparison to the 98 original. I just doesn't give the same feel of religious overtones and somberness. this is ver new age and weirdly less hopeless. also where are the vehicles and other squad members, seems like there's less flexibility in units and probably as a result enemy types to counter them.
Anybody who completes this game on legendary is either mentally derranged enough to fit perfectly into the warhammer universe or is exploiting the game some how.

Shes probably a very young inquisitor. Gotta keep in mind that theyre sent to the schola at infancy alot of times and then given rejuvenation treatments either by choice or being forced to simply to keep them alive.
