    I tried your set up based in a previous video. It really helps to have a foot powered kayak( which I don’t). I ran into so many problems in my paddle kayak . Just dropping the weight down without forward momentum resulted in the leader tangling with the dodger every time. Also, one needs the right rod and reel for kokanee . I had a horrible experience and was pretty embarrassed on that lake I was at. I might try again with a modified version of this with a reel that had a depth counter.

      Its def more challenging in a paddle kayak. The key is to paddle get momentum and drop a little back at a time. Alternatively you turn on the clicker and the loosen the drag until it starts to pay out with the pressure from paddling on its own.

    I like using some light mono from the slider to the weight. I've saved a lot of tackle because the weight in front was actually what was hung up.

    Taking tips for the glacial fed Lake Crescent western Washington for the Beardslee trout. Only species found in this lake alone. They reach 25 lbs but are tough to catch. They are deep and with a 3 ounce weight limit hard to catch. Gotta find a way to get deep while staying in the regs.

    The links for the products seem outdated, or maybe it is just their website, there seems to be many versions of the slider available but only one loads a pics, could you be more specific about which version you currently use, I know the video is old, but I want to solve my tangling problems and for you to get credit for making the awesome fishing content for all of us. If you having tangle issues I highly recommend switching to snap weights. In this way you can run your weights 30' or more away from you lures and drop it as fast you'd like without tangling issues. Checkout the video on this topic here th-cam.com/video/RRPV3_B8YWg/w-d-xo.html

    I bought all the stuff from your links. Fished all day with two downriggers and 1 dropper rig. Didn’t get a single fish on the dropper but had action on the downriggers. What am I doing wrong? I could see the dropper rig on the finder and it seems like it was at the same depth. I was really hoping this system would work so I can run two more rods in the boat.

    Look up the angler innovations "Long liner." Its a dropper wight rig, that has a set on it. You let back so many feet of line and then lock the long liner in place, (you can attatch any weight to it) then when a fish bites, it trips the lock and slides down the line to you're dodger or lure.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      A general rule I use is with 10 lb monofilament I am going to get ~ 10' of drop for every oz if I have 100' of line deployed trolling at 1.5 mph. 1 oz at 100' = 10', 2oz at 100' = 20', and so on. Just be aware that you will go deeper if you are trolling slower and shallower if trolling faster.

    Just got this Lead Dropper, and I really like this system, and I am trying to move away from a down rigger. I still find estimating depth confusing. Lake Hayden has a long sloping smooth bottom which I used to find my depth. Using a 1oz lead ball at 50 ft. set back I hit bottom at 15 to 17 ft trolling a 1mph. Is this what I should expect, and would I assume 30 ft. Depth at 100 ft set back. Thanks again for your videos.

    They have several different options for the slider, which size did you pick? I'm also curious why you don't like using a downrigger on your kayak? Can you also provide links for your other gear; net, reels, line, rod? I always like to see what gear people use when there successful. Thank you.

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For one its a space issue. Prior to fishing out of my Old Town I fished out of a Hobie Revo and there was almost nowhere to mount a downrigger. As a result I honed my skills fishing without one and truth be told I do better than most anglers who run them. I strongly believe this has to do with the more erratic action gained by using droppers. Secondly its a safety issue. I become tangled in line several years ago in a fishing mishap and almost drowned. The idea of hanging a 4 lb lead ball over the side in hundreds of feet of heavy braid unnerves me.
      I'll work on those links to those products in the video in a just a bit.

    Yo Spilt, I'll be trying my luck without a downrigger at least for now, and I picked up a Deep-6 diver (#2), so trying with a lead dropper also will give me a couple options until I get a boat I can leave set up. What I'm wondering is: what rod(s) would you suggest with these 2 options? I'm assuming if I have 4 or 5 oz in the water, or the diver is pulling down deep I'll need a heavier rod. Your thoughts? And, I really would intend to use 1 rod for both. Thanks much.

      A 7-8' medium composite rod should be fine for the droppers. I don't know about the deep-6 driver. Personally I wouldn't use one on Kokanee.

Can this setup also be attached to a manual downrigger if you to take the lead ball off the slider and just attach the downrigger ball leader line clip to this line above the slide somewhere? Hey and thank you very much for this video, it‘s exactly what I was searching for. I want to fish for von in lakes as well but there are also perch and Pike-Perch possible, sometimes also Pike.
    I would like to use 1 to 4 ounz lead (weight) and small lures like Tillins Cobra or Tasmanian Devils which I know from New Zealand where I was there years ago.
    I like the Okuma Kokanee Black KB-C-762ML (4 - 10 lbs) but I’m not sure, if it is the right one?
    And could you recommend a rod with trigger handle for trolling with Dipsys or Slide Divers as well?
    And I should not make any mistakes, because I live in Austria and have to order the rods in the US.
    Thank you very much in advance for your answer, Felix

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not recommend the Okuma Kokanee Black for lead up to 4 oz. It does not have sufficient backbone being an all glass rod. I'd recommend a rod like the Paulina Peak rod which is a composite blend of glass & graphite. paulinapeaktackle.com/shop/ols/products/rod-8000-paulina-peak-custom-kokanee-fishing-rod-8 I use up to 5 oz on this rod with no issue.
      Dipsy or slide divers put a lot of drag on your rod so I don't recommend them for smaller fish and rod size will depend on the size of dipsy or slide diver you use.

    Love your videos. Recent subscriber getting into trolling for kokanee. Watched many videos for rigging droppers, as I also do not wish to mess with downriggers. I have made up my mind on all the gear except the actual "fixture" for the weight....
    I like this Poulsen Cascade free slide spreader you use, but have seen another set up that uses a triple barrel swivel that clips the weight into the third, downward pointing clip. Some clip the weight directly into the clip, some send it down a few inches of mono. This seems like an inexpensive and simple set up. What is your opinion of this? Thank you.

    • @spiltmilt

      You want to use a sliding rig of some kind. Static weight makes it easier for fish to leverage the hooks out of their mouths.

I've tried the above tri swivel comment for river bottom fishing but not for trolling. Seems static weight does bounce bites as I used a mooching weight in a pinch and it was just too much tension to get a good setup aside from rainbow trout.
