Ricky's newfound arrogance, however, aggravates Dennit's alienated son, who retaliates by adding talented, openly gay French Formula One driver Jean Girard to the team. Girard not only taunts Ricky, but outperforms him and becomes the team's top driver. Desperate to beat Girard, Ricky crashes at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Although unscathed, he suffers an apparent mental health crisis on the track, thinking he is on fire, and is hospitalized.

In the final race of the season at Los Angeles, Lightning briefly gains first place but starts falling behind after being overtaken by Storm and the other next-gen racers. He desperately tries to keep up, but in doing so, loses control and suffers a rollover crash after hitting the outside wall, leaving him severely injured and unable to race.

The “invisible fire” is a dark joke on methanol fires in racing, specifically see Rick Mears. Although it’s obviously not the case in this scene, as NASCAR doesn’t use methanol fuel.
A video about him just popped up in my news feed and I watched it, I immediately realized that this scene was referencing for the first time and looked this up. Makes this joke a lot less funny now.

Things like this actually happen, since race cars usually use methane fuel. Methane in sunlight is almost unnoticeable. Because of this there has been incidents when people were on fire but no one new.
