Thomas, a black former Union soldier, ends up in Oregon with his white wife… in 1880s… when Oregon had laws excluding black folks from settling there. Im sure that went well…
Elsa is presented as overly mature and the writer is begging us to take her childish infatuations seriously. She’s also unbelievably promiscuous for a 19th century young woman brought up in a secure family setting. Also the godlessness of almost all characters is wholly unbelievable, especially in the context of a very religious era. Finally, Elsa’s recurring existential angst is also straining. It’s like Jean Paul Sartre meets a grown up Laura ingalls wilder.
That's what I was thinking. "Was Nietzsche that popular with the American pioneers?" All Christianity has been removed. It was kind of creepy and weird.
I felt like 1883 played too much into modern identity politics. Feminism had no place in the 1800s, which would make Elsas character ridiculous. The show could have been amazing.
Actually the roles of women in the show did portray reality instead of just a “feminist trope” there are many diaries and stories of women working jobs that mean did from farming, managing cattle & fighting, so it’s not far off at all. Knowledge is power
This show was awful for so many reasons but nobody seems to mention the history. This show is absolutely jarring for anyone with a basic knowledge and appreciation of western history. The show could have been called 1843 or 1863 just as well as 1883. The Oregon trail and covered wagon trains weren't even really used by 1883 because the transcontinental railroad was already over ten years old at this point. Just ridiculous. Also elsa sucked too.
@@julesfalconeno they were still settling places but the railroad was completed a deacde before this. Many natives were stuck on the rez though some were free...like i feel like they put every bad western trope to make it more tragic
That’s because Hollywood wants us to believe that NO confederate soldier was really racist. They were just good ol boys following orders that just wanted to go home.
I started watching but stopped after the 7th episode for 2 reasons, Elsa's narration was getting annoying and her way too modern actions, but mostly the narration. 🙄
I really enjoyed it until Elsa dramatically went from plucky 18 year old to hardened warrior/honorary native. I cringed when she started screaming in Comanche on her horse, with the natives circling her like she was a prophet.
Your comment more or less acknowledges that 1883 was a brain dead series. The truth of the matter is that this show like all shows has a worldview that underpins the entire narrative. Here, the worldview being presented is godless feminism and postmodernism. Elsa is just another boring girl boss.
Wow, you analyzed this show to death. It sounds as though you resent that this western show had a female protagonist. And Elsa WAS a child, a child entering adulthood. Of course some of her narration seemed childish. It suited her age and experience. I agree with you only in that I would’ve loved more character development and backstory. The characters were interesting, and I wanted more of many of them. Overall, though, I thought this was a beautifully sad western drama. I loved it.
Loved the first episode, then each episode slowed down more and more after that, I made it to episode 5. Sam Elliot was great though, best part of the show from what I saw.
Sam Elliott is the only reason that I gave it a chance to begin with. I've tried it twice now, thinking that I was missing something. Made it through 6 episodes the first time, couldn't get through 3 the second time. In fact, watching it again made it even more noticeable how bad it really is.
I slapped my face during the scene where Elsa and the Indian guy seeked shelter during the storm and she screamed and suddenly kissed him. At this point I was already heavily annoyed by the whole Elsa character and the show was basically over for me.
I’m so glad to see scores of others who saw this show for the abomination it was. There are a lot of videos with people saying it’s the best show ever. After I heard the horrible accent, moronic philosophical narration by Elsa I was done. I kept watching just to see how bad and woke it could be and it didn’t disappoint.
I had high hope for this but after the first few episodes, the rest went downhill..i had to go online to check if i was the only one that noticed all had super white straight teeth. End of episode 8 u was cringing with goosebumps. I thot i was in for a wild ride to discover how the Duttons became the Duttons but ended with a coming of age story about Elsa. I see great reviews and i wonder if we watched the same show. The voice over cringe too.
audience puts in the time and doesnt get rewarded in the end. Basically, the whole family dies, and they have to bring in the brother. And yeah I know the sons survive, but it was a really dumb ending considering how many people gave their all to get this family to Montana so Yellowstone could have a back story.
Notice how much thicker Elsa's accent is when she's narating vs. when she's on camera? Also one of the actors playing a cowboy was from the East coast when I heard him say "Dis is gonna hoit!"
I would like to see a picture of any woman from that time that looked like Elsa. Looked way too modern in appearance and physique. Did they stop the wagon train every few days so she could dye her hair?
@@hlabhlabhlab it's the details that matter. Natural faces will always look the same, but the way she appeared in the series was just too modern and not believable at all.
Not to mention the perfect teeth and filler. I noticed that this one and 1923 have the young women looking straight from an instagram profile from today. It's hard to get into the show with these glaring mistakes.
I saw the pilot and the first few minutes of the second episode. It’s too much like an introduction to basic history, kind of like a film adaptation of historical fiction you’d read in middle school. I don’t have the reviews skill at analysis, but It’s basically an adaptation of a romance novel for teenage girls. The masculinity in it is entirely false, the rugged stoicism… who wants such emotionless characters? Is that supposed to make us take the show more seriously? This show should be called Deadwood: Ultralight. Who needs ANYTHING in this show when we’ve already seen Deadwood? Nobody has time for this dreck.
Its okay to have a teen girl as a lead for historical fiction and make it interesting and engaging its just Elsa wasnt as great of a protagonist people think she is
The issue I had was it was all about the young girl with her talking all through the movie and then she dies at the end. She didn’t carry the Dutton name on, the younger brother did. It should have been about him. Dialogue wasn’t that great. Scenery was magnificent.
Boy! You nailed it. However, to Taylor Sheridan's credit, I cried a lot because I have a daughter who is also my life's light. This show was crafted to get women's audience. Also, History inaccuracies were hard to ignore.
For me the flash forward worked. I had become so accustomed seeing characters survive gut shots in tv/movies that upon watching the opening scene my only thought was “how did they end up in that mess”. But by the time I saw the scene again I realized they opened the series by showing the main character getting killed. It’s just that we (nor her) realized it yet
Elsa ruined this show for me. She falls in love with everyone at the drop of a hat and her narrations made no damn sense at all 😂😂. So emo and annoying.
My main issues: 1) A couple that suppose to be in their 30`s was actually close to their 60`s. 2) Lots of fights. Approaching the 20th century, even the West was way more civilized. 3) Portrayal of Indians as Angels. They were like white Europeans, killing their neighbors like crazy. 4) Funny how Mexican were excluded from the narrative.
The ages are believable considering that someone in their 30s at that time is like someone in their 60s today. The amount that they went through whereas this couple in real life surely takes care of themselves in a way that someone at that time wouldn't at all. Also, I did not at all feel that the natives were portrayed as angels. The angels here were the main characters. Everyone else had to be treated with very carefully or anything could go south. They did a good job of that and I also thought this series made a lot of mistakes.
I really liked the series in a lot of ways and I liked the character Elsa. But the plot holes really took me out of the story. First, was a couple of the actions of Margaret. First Margaret slaps the cook in the face because he swore in front of her son. I think that it would have been likely that in real life he would have hit her back. Why did he take that from her? and then they all act like this was behaviour that should be admired. Saying something would be something but hitting him was overkill. SEcondly, Margaret makes two cowboys watch her son while she goes after Elsa when Elsa is with the group looking for the horse thieves/murderers. Margaret put the whole group at risk by taking to able bodied men away from the fight and putting herself in danger. She risked their survival to go after her daughter. I know they wanted to present her in both situations as a loving fiercely protective Mother but they made her look stupid. Was that the point? To make it look like she was losing it because she was afraid for her children? I didn't get it. :)
Or - when Margaret takes Elsa to the river to give her the sex talk, before Ennis. She literally tells Elsa to follow her heart. So Elsa takes that as a green light to have sex, that night. The next day Margaret yells at her for having sex. ??
This show started off strong but then became all about Elsa and her fucking narration which added nothing to the show I hated her character, she was irrational and erratic who was just fucking every dude that came along and called it love i felt like I was watching a teen drama instead of a western by the end I was skipping all of her scenes just to watch shea and James because that’s what held the show together
Teen dramas can be good historical fiction centering girls can be good ...but elsa wasnt a good protagonist/example of that because her character makes bad decisions which pisses people off and learns ...not much
Thought it was great and had good writing. Sure it's very litterature and real people don't speak that way. But characters well written and it was well shot. Sure it is slow paced an can sometimes feel to drag but then again it's like Jim Harrison's novel which doesn't forget that old western stories can take their time and often been contemplative. I guess that's not for everyone. I didn't get the Elsa criticism though, strange take on that part. It's far from light hearted.

That was the real problem with this series and Hollywood in general. Saying that, McGraw was fantastic in the role. Just seriously hate how much they insult our intelligence, with the...."but this white guy is DIFFERENT".
I found this period western disappointing because of its modern feminist taint. I only got five episodes in before I finally turned it off. The Mothers "sex talk" was basically a "you go girl" talk. two sex scenes I saw looked like they were lifted from a romance novel. The wife telling her husband. she didn't remember nothing in her vowels about asking for his permission (paraphrasing). It looks like the target audience was women.
Honestly I absolutely loved 1883, flaws and all. Even though i have to admit if it was told from the perspective of James Dutton himself or even if they aged up the son and had him as the main character it would have made more sense but still, loved it personally
First 2-3 episodes were good. From that point it became unbearably bad. Bad script, annoying Elsa, and historical accuracy errors killed it. I terminated this series (cut my losses) after Epidode 5. It became a "who is going to die next" and a "what dumb or goofy thing is Elsa gonna do or say next" saga. No thanks.
Actors also look too clean.. It was desert, pre-shampoo and pre-daily-shower times .. You'd expect. a lot of sweaty dust-covrered faces and greesy hair
I enjoyed it, a little to much dramatic narration imo. Her story was a little much for me. Overall If you have a snowed in weekend like we did. its worth the watch and does a good job setting the state for Yellowstone
EVERYTHING that is said in this video is STRICTLY - One man's Opinion and does NOT have any baring or effect of this movie. I watched it and thought it was great so there you are. - two totally different men's opinions. Watch it for your self and make up your own mind. instead of listening to this guy.
Just watched 1883 on DVD expecting great things (at least a great story) but it seems the maker focused way too much on costumes (which were pretty good) but somehow they never got dirty, sweat-stained, patched (one scene on ripped pants) nor ever wrinkled back in a time when people wore their clothes until they rotted off or were handed down. Horrible dialogue, no real plot, historical social anachronisms, continuity problems with the lead characters beard which kept appearing and disappearing in the first few episodes. No attention to basic historical facts - worse when you get a major fact absolutely opposite the truth - I'm speaking of the scene where the immigrants are told to get rid their oxen and get horses to pull the wagons - absolutely incorrect - oxen were much stronger, hardier and could graze much more widely than horses. Just an awful vehicle for modern female empowerment.
I havent to say I did enjoy the series overall. I do think a few of the criticisms are justified. I thought they did descent until anout episode 7-8 I think it went a little downhill. I think in the beginning they spent so much time telling us how dangerous the journey would be that they didnt have as much time to show us. I found the Elizabeth Dutton character to be somewhat annoying at times. Overall it was worth watching, even though it could have been better.
You tried to dissect her heaven scene with logic? I disagree with the majority of your video and your outlook in general, however dissceting her heaven scene was a poor take or decision.
Everything you say is correct, especially the ridiculously annoying commentating… but the cinematography and the fact that it’s a western has brought me back to rewatch the series
I get what you’re saying, but my wife and I loved 1883 after catching up with Yellowstone. Sure, it’s flawed in its portrayal of a strong woman in those times and everything, but couldn’t help but to fall in love with Elsa. Incredible performances by everyone, but Isabelle May killed it.
elsa was a forced character just like the woman cop in Punisher , removed them and the sotry still holds and leaves place for more things that make sense , unlike the Psychologist in the departed another expandable character , waste of screentime. 1883 was awesome.
1883 did have some writing issues, but aside from that it was a pretty solid series. Episode 7 and 8 did also feel a bit like filler and I did feel like some characters were let out of the mix but the show has more to make up for it
I really wanted to like it, but Elsa is over-sexualized from her first scene and that really puts me off. It felt like a sexual fantasy of a (probably) older man or something. Yikes. Strong pick me vibes (not like the other girls, wild and fearless, well some more fear and reason could have prevented her from dying). I also really hate that the didn't use her language skills to reveal to the first nation attackers that she was a friend, she could have screamed something in their language and maybe they would have interrupted the attack long enough for her to explain that her father was hunting the killers already and so on. But no, get everyone killed and her as well. Takes me out of the narrative and drama when a fateful event is so forced. It looked gorgeous and I loved the soundtrack though.
Amazing review!! I had the same thoughts EXPECIALLY about Elsa, the ending with her and Ben? And not Ennis. I actually just finished it, I had no emotional connection to her death and the only one I actually felt for was the old cowboy and the strangley enough the Aunt.
Overall I loved the show, but was so sick of Elsa’s love stories and her character in general. A buffalo soldier and a confederate soldier working together was a HUGE opportunity for great storytelling but they never even bring it up? That was the worst part. And Sam Elliot was amazing, although his ending did not have to be so bleak.
As purely entertainment it was fine but historical hell no and some things ie girlboss was somewhat jarring and only her dad and the buffalo soldier were shown as compotent and the Sam/Elsa marriage was a step too far relationship with a cowboy nah with a commanche sure like it or not tnis relationship was a strech in that time and place
It's good If you want to relax and watch something. Not every show needs to be as good as Mad Men (yes, Mad Men is waaaay better than breaking bad. BB is so overrated).
First 3 episodes were decent, then it all went down hill from there, episode by episode, soppy love story of a teenage girl coming of age and a load of woke politically correctness thrown into the mix, what a shame

1883 was dreadful
Ep.1 Great Ep.2-5 Ok Ep. 6-10 Garbage
No thanks.
This is great. Keep doing them. This is the video right here I knew I wasn’t the only one lol
It's really bad.
@@toddcunningham3213No it isn’t that bad.
The reason for In medias res is that it’s an epic. Epics have to start In medias res.
It’s still bad but that’s the narrative structure.
Actors also look too clean.. It was desert, pre-shampoo and pre-daily-shower times .. You'd expect. a lot of sweaty dust-covrered faces and greesy hair
and elsa would have had dreaded hair in no time. The fact that she almost never tied it all up was so unrealistic.
Love this show…maybe one of my favorites ever….great acting and great story ……
I enjoyed it, a little to much dramatic narration imo. Her story was a little much for me. Overall If you have a snowed in weekend like we did. its worth the watch and does a good job setting the state for Yellowstone
awful show
EVERYTHING that is said in this video is STRICTLY - One man's Opinion and does NOT have any baring or effect of this movie. I watched it and thought it was great so there you are. - two totally different men's opinions. Watch it for your self and make up your own mind. instead of listening to this guy.
One of the worst shows I’ve ever seen. Overrated trash.
Another negative review for likes. Sad
I have not watched Yellowstone or 1923 but this series I loved it absolutely Hilarious.
Elsa was the same character we’ve seen in countless Disney movies. Selfish, strong willed and difficult. She ruined the series for me.
Completely disagree, I absolutely loved this show. It touched me deeply and stayed with me longer than any other show I’ve watched.
me too i loved it
Loved it! So sorry you can’t appreciate it!
You probably liked Rings of Power as well
@@DanskadrengRings Of Power is crap. 1883 is great!
Couldn't agree more, the narration is especially painful.
You tried to dissect her heaven scene with logic? I disagree with the majority of your video and your outlook in general, however dissceting her heaven scene was a poor take or decision.
From the first episode that accent killed me.
Everything you say is correct, especially the ridiculously annoying commentating… but the cinematography and the fact that it’s a western has brought me back to rewatch the series
I liked 1883 more than any Yellowstone.
I adored 1883 and look forward to second season of 1923 which is equally good.
Just too much melodrama for me
I get what you’re saying, but my wife and I loved 1883 after catching up with Yellowstone. Sure, it’s flawed in its portrayal of a strong woman in those times and everything, but couldn’t help but to fall in love with Elsa. Incredible performances by everyone, but Isabelle May killed it.
i thought it was pretty basic. i didnt enjoy it.
elsa was a forced character just like the woman cop in Punisher , removed them and the sotry still holds and leaves place for more things that make sense , unlike the Psychologist in the departed another expandable character , waste of screentime. 1883 was awesome.
1883 did have some writing issues, but aside from that it was a pretty solid series. Episode 7 and 8 did also feel a bit like filler and I did feel like some characters were let out of the mix but the show has more to make up for it
This series was great.
Shows how ignorant snd inhumane colonizers were
We get it….you hate this show. Period.
lol this is easily one of the greatest series ever made for television lmao 🤣
I thought it was fantastic and brought awareness and interest in the Oregon trail
Breaking bad is so overrated. The second season that you mentions is the worse season. Mad men is way better than BB.
Realistic New Western Drama. 🤠
Realistic lol!!!!!!
Yes, we get to see western sets and themes, but this is truly;one of the worst shows I’ve EVER seen.
What are you talking about, it was a great show
Find enjoyment. Look for issues and you won't enjoy anything.
Wrong. Great show
It’s the constant snot crying for me.
Great review. It's beyond me how people can think this is good. Quality is important.
It's good If you want to relax and watch something. Not every show needs to be as good as Mad Men (yes, Mad Men is waaaay better than breaking bad. BB is so overrated).
Nah I loved this show ❤
Bro its as corny as yellowstone. Just a soap opera. The worst
Its hard to believe you all watched the same show that i did..IT WAS SO DAMN GOOD!!! Maybe even GREAT!
loved it
I thougth it was so boring
It was. If you’ve seen Deadwood, what the point of this trash?
Enjoyed the shit out of it
First 3 episodes were decent, then it all went down hill from there, episode by episode, soppy love story of a teenage girl coming of age and a load of woke politically correctness thrown into the mix, what a shame
Who let bro cook 💀
