  • A new mural symbolizes to the community a manifestation of faces, colors, and ideas from the back country and a modern mix of the contemporary American experience with all its goodness and class pain that touches everyone. Ultimately, we all share the same story. Mario Torero is an artist and activist, most known over the last 45 years for an extensive body of socially conscious mural work produced in different cities throughout the United States and around the world. With a long history of involvement in both local and global arts and progressive movements, Mario has come to be seen as a legendary figure with deep roots in the San Diego cultural arts community. As a co-founder of Chicano Park, he has contributed more than twenty standing murals and three sculptures; other murals devoted to social awareness continue to appear in different parts of the County. Mario continues to paint, teach, curate shows and organize community art intervention installations, bringing meaning and vigor to the term "Artivista." This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

One of the few true mentors I have never hesitated to admit that I follow because he understands where I had to get to and have to go as an artist, an activist, and a human survivor. 'Mentor' is such a charged word. Did ancient seamen worship the stars they followed to navigate the globe? Not exactly, but they did give the stars names and the shapes of animals. In this way, it is Mario who is the star, who offers the pinhole of light to navigate this sea by.
I just try and name the constellation he's part of.
Mario Torero, an artist and a man, in the best sense of both terms; ~)
