When dealing with the wife unit, it is important to remember that she is just doing the best that she can. Any mistakes are 100% unintentional. Make it right with her. Apologize to her on camera for all the viewers to see. It’s embarrassing to chewed out in front of a crowd by the one you love. (Not to mention 492,000 viewers). You can test the fuel gauge for proper operation after connecting it up before putting the pump into the tank by moving the float between levels. I think Ford and GM used different gauge configuration. I used a brass drift when removing he ring when there was gas in the tank to avoid any aparks.
Lauren, 100% correct. Only a dumbass would use whoa and go during this kind of maneuver. Ray, smarten up or we will fully support her b!tch slapping you silly.
Years ago my wife helped me tow a disabled vehicle and it did not go well. At first she was in the vehicle being towed and almost hit the vehicle I was driving because her vehicle's brakes didn't have power steering and it was too hard for her to apply the brakes. So we traded places and she tried driving the truck in front and nearly snapped the tow strap by taking off to quickly. It got intense but we got thru it, but neither one of us ever wants to go thru that again. Sorry you didn't enjoy it either Lauren, my wife watched the video and said that's exactly how it was for her. Soldering aluminum wires: Soldering to aluminum is very difficult and quite different than soldering to copper or solder coated surfaces. The issue with aluminum is the oxide on the aluminum itself and it needs to be removed so the solder can make a electro-mechanical bond to the shield itself. In your case, a mechanical bond would be best used. Always nice to see Wife Unit. Treat her well and hire a shop helper or another mechanic. You might try your local trade schools.
I would imagine the wire was all copper. One was tin coated the other bare copper. Very compatible. I do not believe anyone would use aluminum wiring in automotive applications. The vibration would cause the wire to fail in a very short period. Pre-tinned copper strands is common and superior to bare copper stranded.
I have found after much experience, a really rusted bolt like that. Wire brush as much loose rust off before you get it wet with spray. At least some of the rust falls away rather than turning to mud to restrict the theads. Great video! Love watching you do your thing. 👍👍👍
My last years of racing, I was not too serious, so I didn't have a crew. I found one of those carts they use to collect shopping carts in the parking lot- I rigged it up to my jack point and I could push my car through the tech line by myself- all I had to do was walk along side the car and steer while the cart thing pushed the car.
Our local mechanic shop does the same thing. They do it so much that they have a tire strapped to the front. Their shop is just across the street from Walmart. Many vehicles have been pushed from there. Wife unit did a great job. You should tell her in a video.
So anyway, it was 24hrs following Ray's driving directions and criticism, and he found some vision returned to his left eye, and the swelling in his groin reduced to the point he could almost walk again!! 🤣🤣🤣
Woe and go do sound a like. Which is why when towing, we always had ground rules, if you hear anything other than STOP! or FORWARD! You did not move the vehicle. this has solves many towing related issues between family and friends. :D

Interesting repair. I did not know a GM & Ford would fit same pump assembly, good to know know since I own an E250. Looking forward to part 2. BTW Wife Unit did well, I know guys that are incredible of doing exactly what she did there to assist.
I tend to use the old pump harness to create an adapter (if factory wiring isn't corroded) if the replacement has a different connector. That way if it needs replaced again and the replacement is an OEM the wirings ready to go or adapted to the new connector. Also adds a bit of length for those that have just long enough wires.
I think it was tough for @wifeunit at first because the UTV was really fidgety and torquey in low. By the end, when pushing to the lift she had nicely dialed in the throttle modulation for smooth and safe. Tense things like this happen - the love lasts. "I love you" is often said "I'm sorry. Please forgive me."
Those self-sealing solder connectors are interesting, but old school "fixed pinball machines for 10 years" me will always hand solder a connection, and heat shrink over it. Have never had one fail on me.
Wow, forever ago there was a story were a girl heard "go" instead of "no" and she jumped before the guy could secure her bungee cord. Clear communication Ray.
And that my friend is why when giving commands you don't use words that sound alike like whoa and go. Used forward or reverse it's very hard to confuse the two
Ray, I hope you take your wife out for a nice dinner as a reward for the great job she did. That takes both excellent control and driving skills to do that as good as she did. Very well done.
Careful using ratchet straps to pull stuff. I did the same, it snapped and sent the metal part careening towards my head. Luckily it missed but it was close.

That part about figuring out the wiring for the new pigtail! - And yesterday I had someone comment in a discussion on another channel that Ray's content is not "technical enough"...
Have to stick up for wifeunit, whoa & go sound too much alike. Maybe start & stop, or you could text, or call on the phone. Either way Lauren did good. You owe her a date night Mr Ray😆
What Ray calls a 'Florida snow shovel' we call a coal shovel up here in Massachusetts where snow, sand and salt are our constant winter companions. Oh, and rust, too.
Just a tip when splicing multi conductor cables together I have found it better to stagger the splices rather than have them all in the same place. This reduces the diameter of the splice considerably and reduces the chance of cross conductor shorts.
I have been in the woah vs go debate before. Was not a good out come either. Learned to say only stop and go. Has saved my life when being passenger in autos before. When traffic is coming on passenger side of auto. Been on both sides of work. Best use of vocabulary is not using woah except when riding a horse. Great video and lots of work to get van running correctly.
Small point but wouldn’t it have been better to change the connector on the fuel pump itself rather than adapting the vehicle wiring to fit a non-standard pump? If the pump needs replacement in the future and a genuine part is fitted then the connector will need to be changed back to the original type and future-Ray or whoever will be cursing present-day-Ray’s decision to make the car fit the pump rather than the other way around…
Judging by the shape the van is in, cut the plug off the old pump, wire to new pump, send it on its way. Probably won't be on the road long enough to ever need a new pump again.
Have you ever considered using a winch and some anchors for a snatch block to pull vehicles into the shop? Just a thought, keep up the good stuff and thanks for everything that goes into sharing it with everyone.
And she was doing something you couldn't do at all on your own. Give her a hug and tell her the viewers reckon you're way too grumpy, and they're right.
I've done the same thing to my wife while she was helping me in the garage, not realizing I was in the wrong at that moment and then apologized after I thought about what I did. Hope you did to the wife unit
My '66 Nova project needed a new trunk floor and I had a '69 Mercury Montego fuel tank that was the floor. so I mated the 2 but the Nova gauge said Fwhen E and E when F, swapping wires didn't help. so, I fixed it with a black marker and liquid paper!
Nope. The circuit will be something like battery->gauge->white wire->level sensor (variable resistor)->ground. If you connect it as battery>gauge->white wire->ground then the gauge will display permanently either full or empty.
@@christinamoneyhan5688 nope, the gauge would read either full or empty permanently if the wires were transposed. He wasn’t thinking the circuit through.
@@tonyjover resistance is the same either way. As the float arm moves up or down the resistance changes. GM uses a different standard than Ford or many other manufacturers. So he may realize soon that this GM fuel sender uses 0-90 ohms and the opposite is for Ford 73-10 ohms. When the tank is full, you will get 90 ohms on a GM and around 10 ohms on a Ford. Bottom line: the polarity of the wires doesn’t matter. The resistance is changed by the float rubbing on a wound spring like wire to change the resistance as it moves up or down.
I learned a lesson with those tie down straps. The handle needs to be closed down to the ratchet as there is a lock which keeps the unit from slipping or twisting. I learned that the hard way when I put too much tension on the strap and had an “Equipment Failure” with a rapid release of energy! Minor damage took place.
i'm guessing its a while since WU played dodgem cars and she is used to avoiding rather than hitting other vehicles. doing this went against her reflexes.
my dad and I were the campground parking experts. Hands up is come on, big waves for a turn, use the BIG voice, COME ON BACK, TURN, FORWARD, repeat continuously. and most importantly STOP STOP STOP is never wrong. We would park other people's campers with our Suburban. After we did an awesome job on our camper into a small spot we got asked to help a family that had a tree blocking their door and they were bumped into some saplings. Thank her for the help & next time try simple words that are different in length and directive. That was not the correct fuel pump.

Excellent video as always! Glad to see you’re business is booming!
O' that would have been a great "Red Flag" challenge.
clear instructions may help - stop and go rather than go and whoa.
I was thinking the same thing. I'd prefer to leave the vehicle wiring alone, making any repairs/replacements easier down the road.
Totally agree
That's why you only use OEM parts and not after market JUNK!
@@brianmendel8680 If it was my summer daily sure. But the winter shitbox gets a $50 Autozone special.
I’d say Lauren did a pretty good job. I know few people who can push and pull heavy vans with 4x4 off-road buggy with such precision and control.
Another great job! Well done and the wife unit did great as well.
Ray! You stop giving wife unit a hard time. 😁 She's doing a great job.

@Rainman Ray's Repairs That's why you love Chevys Ray so you can just pop the bed off to get to the fuel tank. 😂
I'm about to be getting a 1986 Ford F150 I6 300.
I'll need to do a clutch job on it I never don't that before and I can't find and videos telling me step by step how to do it I was wondering if you had any videos like that. I'm mainly do automatic transmission repair and engine repair.
Always use a BRASS PYNCH when removing and reinstalling the full pump
The Fuel Pressure Regulator is bad Ray!
lmfao she shall not be trusted driving she shoulda been the one puttin it in nuetral😂😂
That part about figuring out the wiring for the new pigtail!
-
And yesterday I had someone comment in a discussion on another channel that Ray's content is not "technical enough"...
Have no fear guys, as a wife unit Lauren has sooooo many revenge avenues, the look on her face said they were engaging already!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ray I think you made a wise decision about this van.I waiting for this repair
Stop upsetting the wife she did excellent 👍👍👍
It is so nice to see the family unit be a shadow of you❤❤😊
Have to stick up for wifeunit, whoa & go sound too much alike. Maybe start & stop, or you could text, or call on the phone. Either way Lauren did good. You owe her a date night Mr Ray😆
Wife Unit says "Your head is made of wood" - Ray hears "Your head is working good". Both returned to work with a Smirk. 😏 and happy. 😊
Go easy on the wife unit. There are no more like her.
What Ray calls a 'Florida snow shovel' we call a coal shovel up here in Massachusetts where snow, sand and salt are our constant winter companions.
Oh, and rust, too.
A little patience goes a long way with the wife unit.
My wife has the exact same issue with the English language!
Wife-Unit is AMAZING! What a capable partner you have.
Just a tip when splicing multi conductor cables together I have found it better to stagger the splices rather than have them all in the same place. This reduces the diameter of the splice considerably and reduces the chance of cross conductor shorts.
I side with the wife unit. Stop would be a better word.
Had not seen the solder imbedded heat shrink connectors before. Ordered some. Thanks!
Have you ever considered using a winch and some anchors for a snatch block to pull vehicles into the shop? Just a thought, keep up the good stuff and thanks for everything that goes into sharing it with everyone.
especially he now working on boneyard cars.
I came to the chat to say the same thing!
@@robertpayne6960 say no more, this guy is not open to advice, he insisted buying big red 'dumb' truck, wasting precious $.
Things can happen in communication but, you guys are amazing! What a team!
When my boys got old enough to help me with such things, peace came to my marriage. The boys are emotionally scarred....but then again, we all are.
The wife unit is doing an awesome job. She needs to be rewarded.
Let us know Ray how comfortable the couch is. Based on the ...LOOK.3:41..you got, you dead meat.
@11:08 Vice grips holding the bolt. Good for the impact. Also good luck...prevents accidentally twisting/tearing the bolt off the strap.
Showing you true colors Ray, Don't treat the wife unit like that, a little more empathy, after all, she does not have to be there.
And she was doing something you couldn't do at all on your own. Give her a hug and tell her the viewers reckon you're way too grumpy, and they're right.
Same thing happened with an old friend of mine, I yelled whoa! he heard different and backed his boat through his fence.
Cute. You can do whatever you want to your own vehicle, but doing something like that to a customer's vehicle would NEVER fly.
Lauren has a lot of patience. My wife may have given me a pan-a-gram instead of just a look.
Patience is what's needed. Wife Unit is doing a great job.
It doesn't really matter if the two sense wires are switched. It's just a variable resistor that doesn't mind the current flowing the other way. 😉
Your gauge would read backwards I think ?
@@christinamoneyhan5688 nope. A resistor has no polarity .
Little bit of that and low range on the side by side needs more throttle to get any movement, it really doesn't feel right if you aren't used to it
my dad and I were the campground parking experts.
