    Is the Nurse candidate program competitive? How long was the process for you? I hear some people can wait as long as a year and a half after you graduate to get through the whole application process.

    • @itsestelarojas4713
      @itsestelarojas4713  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Nurse Candidate Program is competitive and it depends on how many nursing billets the Navy is needing at the time you apply. The process took about 4 months for me. Although, I do not personally know of the process taking as long as a year and a half after graduation, I would not doubt it. One thing I have learned being in the military is that sometimes you wait (we call it hurry up and wait) for a long time before getting results. I would suggest just keeping in contact with your recruiter and anyone else who is directly responsible for getting your package submitted.

    • @zacharyhockett6248
      @zacharyhockett6248 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I got the ncp scholarship last year. Getting the application together took a long time and the best way to get the information you need is to talk to a medical officer recruiter. It does require an acceptance letter to a bachelors nursing program. As far as GPA the requirement is 3.0+ but much higher if you want to be competitive. I applied with a 4.0 at the time. Physical requirements are the same as the rest of the navy (you will go to MEPS for a physical just like enlisted). As far as how competitive, that depends on if you're applying for a 2 year (most competitive) or the one year (less but still competitive) but overall consider it highly competitive. If you have more questions let me know.

    • @zacharyhockett6248
      @zacharyhockett6248 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It does depend on more factors than GPA. I submitted a resume, motivational statement, went through interviews with Lt. Commanders in the Nurse Corp among other things. GPA helps but don't let a few lower grades stop you from applying especially if you're a highly motivated person committed to excellence.

    So if I understand MECP correctly, technically any rate can apply provided they have their undergrad degree completed? Isn't it assumed that one has already completed their prerequisites before applying for the program since you must complete the BSN in 36 months? Currently an IT rated sailor with a non-medical degree (want to go back to school, though). Closest thing I ever got was hospital IT.

    • @itsestelarojas4713
      @itsestelarojas4713  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Red Alpha Yes, you can be any rate to apply to MECP. You don’t need your undergrad degree completed. You just have to have a minimum of 30 semester hours done that will transfer towards a BSN. These would be classes such as Anatomy & Phys, Chem, Microbiology, English, Math...And yes, you have to be able to get your BSN in 36 months to be eligible for MECP.

    Can you please explain what duties/collaterals you are expected to do your first year? Because it is seems like they expect you to lead your first year despite that you don’t know what you are doing, especially if you never been in the military. Yes, you learn through officer school, but it can be be intimating if you don’t know what you expected to do coming in.

    • @itsestelarojas4713
      @itsestelarojas4713  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      As a new nurse you are not expected to have high stakes types of collaterals. For example, you can have a collateral duty such as the safety representative on your unit. Or, you can be in charge of the morale, welfare, and recreation (planning fun/social events) for your unit. I agree it can be intimidating coming into the military as a new officer with no prior military experience. Don't worry, you will be expected to learn your job as a nurse first before having to take on huge collateral responsibilities.

      Sam Aguirre I know it can be daunting but here are the answers to the questions you did ask. 1) You need to take the SAT/ACT for college, nursing school requires it. 2) You need to study to become a nurse before going to boot camp. Boot camp is for enlisted. Officer Development School is for officers (nurses).

    • @itsestelarojas4713
      @itsestelarojas4713  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jessielyn Reyes I have never heard that you have to work as a SWO first and then transfer to nursing. I have also never met a nurse who had to do that. If you have a BSN and passed the NCLEX you are eligible for a nursing job. Nothing is ever guaranteed, there may not be a lot of nursing billets at the time you apply for a nursing job but, just make yourself as competitive as possible. But, it sounds like whoever told you that is trying to get you to become a SWO. Get your BSN and apply straight for the Nurse Corps if that’s your goal.

      VTS _30 You can enlist and try to be a Corpsman. From there you can apply for MECP (Medical Enlisted Commissioning Program). I would say don’t waste your time. Start doing college courses on your own while you’re getting paid in the military. You need to have certain courses completed to be accepted into MECP.

  • @Spanishfutbol2010

      MECP is only offered for active duty and reservists. If you are out of the military, try the Nurse Candidate Program. You cannot be older than 42 at the time of commissioning though. You can also try directly commissioning as an officer once you graduate nursing school and get some nursing experience.

      Hi! Now that you have already graduated nursing school I would say go get at least a year of nursing experience and then try to get into the Navy as a "direct accession." It is more ideal if you have experience in inpatient places like Med-Surg or critical care. I’m in my 2nd semester of college with my Major being Nursing. Would you recommend joining the reserves now, gain experience and as I get closer, try the NCP program? Or just wait, try NCP and then join?

      I recommend finishing nursing school and then joining. You are already in nursing school so you can apply for NCP now. If you join the reserves now you will not join as a nurse because you don't have your nursing license yet. You would have to join as an enlisted and who knows what job they would give you. Also, it depends on what you really want to do after nursing school. If you do the reserves, you will be a part-time Navy nurse and work in a civilian hospital most of the time. If you join as active duty, you will be in the Navy full-time. Totally finish nursing school first though!

      Hi Estela! I have been so stressed out as this is a hard decision to make. I’m currently in nursing school and start January. I have been thinking about joining the navy after graduation since I want to continue my nursing education to be a CRNA. Do you mind if I ask you a couple of questions?
