Re Capri - An SUV platform is a more practical vehicle for an electric vehicle. To get decent range, you need a big battery. To make a practical vehicle with a big heavy battery, you need a big vehicle. It was always going to be the case. I'd just like to point out that bigger heavier vehicles means that they use more energy. In the net-zero drive, the personal transport compromise is that more energy must be consumed. This too was always going to be the case. It's especially bad because the actual energy source is still mostly fossil fuel. They would say that things have to get worse before they can get better. As we are frequently seeing, things get worse and never get better. Skepticism is frequently a good thing.
Basically cars are becoming an appliance, eventually they will all be made in the same factory and like you said just a different badge and grill, like a washing machine.
It's why Jeremy Clarkson has stopped doing car progs, he said he would not test or review "White goods", says a lot coming from the world's greatest petrol head.
Yup. Car manufacturers just make and market steel boxes with wheels. Everything else comes from “Tier 1” suppliers like TRW Denso Lear etc. They’re the guys with the intellectual property. All that’s left is “brand”
Although i agree with what your saying, " limited run" also means it's hand-built, especially as its built by Boreham motorsports, as they're obviously a low volume manufacturer compared to ford. This means that definitely both models will be expensive. As far as your own mk1 escort, unless your actually going to go rallying fair enough but everybody else goes the rally look just for the road. As long as its not an RS model ( if it is I'd keep it factory but with a duratec maybe) To stand out from the crowd if it was mine I'd do it as a tribute to the twin cam from 1968, oblong headlamps, no bubble arches, old English white bodywork with bonnet/top edge of wings/scuttle panel all in satin black also with a duratec or cossie YB.
Regarding the "FORD CORTINA MK.3." for those wanting to see what a genuine 100% rust free, as Brand New shell, fully painted looks like, ( I have one on my channel), Following years of extreme restoration work, using £8,000 worth of super rare genuine Ford Panels, and a total cost of £47,000 spent. So you do not have to "imagine" what a mint one looks like, you can see what one looks like, and take a nostalgic trip back in time to when cars looked stunningly beautiful.and a time when the Ford Cortina was the best selling car in the UK.
I will check that out. I had a Mk3 Cortina, 1971 2 litre GXL 4 door (I still have those badges). Metallic brown with black vinyl roof. My dad and I restored it, painted it Brunswick Green, added Mk1 RS Turbo alloys, then I had the rear doors welded up, painted it Dukes Orange, put an Essex 3 litre V6 in it. I then put Mk2 Escort wider arches on it and Mk2 Escort Roll cage (which fitted striaght in!), changed the wheels for Slot Mags and added the Rover V8 (Higher HP engine that used to carry the Twin turbo's, added the twin ram air induction)....Then had it in storage whilst I moved away, then when I moved to a different country for 7 years, I promptly had it taken apart and the chassis scrapped as I couldn't afford to keep storing it but didn't want anyone else owning it lol.
There's only a few Electric cars that I may choose to buy, the new Renault 5, the new Peugeot and maybe an Electric Mini. Other than that, I'll be buying classic cars for the future!
I started driving in 89, my first vehicle was a mk3 Escort van with a ghia interior, but being the youngest driver out of my family I was always around Ford’s of many variations I owned 3 mk 4 cortina’s, 1 mk 5 cortina, 1 mk 3 escort many versions of the sierra’s the best being the 3 door which of course has the rs 500 kit, many Granadas. But my sister is 8 years older so she was able too drive earlier models, but her boyfriend was a car lover and when they were together, he had 2 triumph stags, but the nicest cars he had after many others were the 2 xr4i with the 2.8i lumps and manual box. Those clearly were not the cosworth but boy did they shift, I could only dream about something like those due to insurance costs. I also had a full bike license and my first bigger bike was the Yamaha 350 rd ypvs. That was a lot of fun being a 2 stroke with a serious powerband. But as I got older i had a 1 year old mk1 ford galaxy 2.8 I. Because of my children who was not keen on my road language so they never went in it much. So I went on to BMWs the first being a e34 3.5i straight 6 after that many different cars from fords to BMWs and Mercedes. In 2013 it was found I had a serious degenerative spine issues with stenosis and crumbling disks. After a few operations it helped slightly but my left leg didn’t work right so everything went to auto, I dry stored my last motorbike which was a 93 Honda cbr100r. I knew I could not use it but kept it road legal for 4 years and then I was ready to realise I could no longer ride it so that was heart breaking, the same thing came to my last car which was a Mercedes ML320 auto. I could no longer drive this as I need a right hip replacement so I could not rely on breaking properly. Like you I would love to see a larger production of original ford cars, like the classic mk1 cortina, mk1 escort, mk1 Granada, even if there had to be slight adjustments due to a EV engine if needed, these classic cars if kept to more or less the same as the original would fly out of the showrooms without a doubt. When I first see the advert for the new ev mustang it broke my heart. I since as long as I can remember I have wanted a ford mach 1 mustang and to hear they had finally killed it upset me just watching the advert, but this is the first time I have come across your channel and to now you have a Mach 1 means I’m subscribing to your channel as your car heart seems the same as mine. 👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧
A licensed product like this Escort won’t be the cheap, cheerful little basic car people remember. It might still be little and look cheerful, but it certainly won’t be cheap or basic. That said, I believe Ford’s current direction makes sense. For decades, Ford has excelled in building trucks and SUVs far more than saloons, and the proof is in the numbers: the F-150 was the world’s best-selling vehicle for decades. Even now, the F-Series trucks are Ford’s only entry in the top 10 most popular vehicles globally. Ford simply can’t compete with the likes of the Corolla on a global scale. The Focus and Fiesta, for example, never achieved the same level of worldwide success. So why continue trying to beat Toyota in a losing game when Ford can stick to what it does best? As for a retro revival like the Escort, I genuinely doubt it could ever sell millions in 2025. Of the world’s top 10 best-selling cars, only the Camry is a saloon, and even then, it’s large enough to be considered a big car in Europe. The rest of the list is dominated by SUVs, hatchbacks, and a couple of pickup trucks. It’s clear that the global appetite for small saloons has waned. When people want something smaller, they gravitate toward hatchbacks like the Golf or Corolla, not saloons. It’s also worth noting that the Golf and Corolla are the two smallest vehicles on the top 10 list; everything else is significantly larger. Pouring massive R&D into a mass-market, small saloon like the Escort would be financial suicide for Ford. The market has moved on, and so should Ford.
I like a rear wheel drive car that has a prop shaft that goes to a differential that then puts power to the back wheels powered by a 90’s bmw because that inline 6 has such a stunning sound… I’m not into a shell with a screen and a motor on each wheel that pretends to be a vehicle when it’s just an appliance that has a badge with no major meaning
I believe Manufacturers are Confused. Not everyone wants an electric car. I paid less than three thousand pounds for my car twelve years ago . No traction control, lane discipline, cruise control, driving modes , etc.etc. therefore less to go wrong. I’ll be lucky to get an electric pushbike for my budget.
Thing is, manufacturers just make steel boxes with wheels. So-called “Tier 1” suppliers supply everything else. Even the wiring harness and seats. A volume manufacturer simply can’t make anything in small volume unless it’s an extremely limited run. Concept cars are easy enough to build because the budget’s virtually unlimited. Just for an example, the rubber floor mats for Jaguar’s C-X75 cost £75,000!!
You aren't actually a million miles away! If you go through the construction and use act, the eu rules, tuv etc... the pedestrian safety, internal safety requirements now limit what you can actually make a car look it. No sharp edges, lights and gaps between bonnet and engine etc. The mandatory crap bolted on for the ncap ratings. Along with the w.e.f "suggestion. Everyone shares engines, gearboxes, suspension components between groups. Even full vehicles on a lot of platforms. Btw... the governments of Europe "especially Labour" are now giving financial penalties "fines" to car manufacturers that do not sell a percentage of electric vehicles. That's wht manufacturers are closing factories, to cut back on production of real cars.
It was a mistake for Ford to end production on the Mondeo, Focus, Fiesta, Fusion, Taurus, Crown Vic, Ka and such, I want to bring them all back or a better replacement, heck a new replacement for the likes of the Scorpio or such, revive the Thunderbird as their upper class type car, revive Mercury while at it too tbh, so yeah
My mate did a nut and bolt rebuild of an RS2000 Mk1, back in 1985. I've got photos of the bodyshell on a trailer when we took it to get painted. He paid less than £1500 for it. I don't know where it is now.
The key here is that the cars aren’t being built by Ford, they’re being built by Boreham Motorworks, so they won’t have to adhere to the strict regulations for new vehicle construction regarding crash testing, ncap, and emissions etc. Remember that these are going to be hand-built and that’s going to be reflected in the price, I’d expect prices for the mk1 to start at 75k. There’s no way that it’s going to be financially viable to tool up for the body panels so I’m 99% sure that they’ll use Magnum or Expressed Steel panels to make them - just like MST do. Boreham Motorworks are part of the DRVN Automotive brand, and very little to do with Ford, other than the license to build them. The numbers will be very limited, maybe 100 per year at the most - but that’s just an educated guess. Nevertheless I’m looking forward to seeing them on the 12th.
When I was younger I had a mk1 1300 sport for my first car and later on i had a MK1 avo Mexico which was a great car and I miss it so much as it was stolen, I'd love to see mk1s being made again.
Had two escorts I wonder what the safety rating would be on these limited run cars and would you be able to convince an insurance company to issue a affordable insurance quote
Problem is that to build a mainstream car you have to abide by the regulations, which means they'll be exactly the same as all the other mainstream cars. The only way to get around the regulations is to be low volume. Catch 22.
I'd have considered a mk8 or 9 fiesta if it was 3 door and did a couple of hundred miles on a charge as I don't do that in a week. But no sadly I must stick with the mk7 fiesta and a handful of mk4 escorts. Either way I'd rather have a genuine mk1 than a mk wrong from wish
A fast Ford like an Escort is one of the most fun period cars. Cosworth and RS200's are another level of crazy. Handmade cars. you pay for the exclusivity and no dealer slavery. Supply and demand, don't undercut your profit margin chasing customers. The more you make, the less they are worth. Parts cost money as does labour.
Decent modern engine with maybe 150-200bhp. New suspension and brakes. Power steering, modern manual gearbox. Mod cons inside. Ricaro seats. ~£40k and they'd sell like hot cakes. I loved your response to the new Renault 5.. it was my exact response too.. Renault 4 will be EV only too.. 😬
I was with you all the way and yes I like Fords! My dad had a new MK1 red Escort, loved it, cherished it and got rid of it because it rotted in front of his eyes! Me? Years later, three cortinas, a plethora of ford company cars Sierra's etc and then an Smax! The Smax is a brilliant car, my son liked it so much, he has bought one and he loves it! Me? Well I bought a 3 year old Kia Sportage 4wd to tow the caravan. That was 9 years ago and I still love it! The only issues in that time, are the radio, 2 clutches (caravan remember) 1 broken interior light bulb and services / tyres. Looking to move on but, I suspect it will be another Kia, or it's sister car, Hyundai Tucson (?) as they are slightly cheaper than the Kia. However, my favourite car is still the MK1 Ford Escort! 🥰
Cars are crap nowadays 80s 90s 00s golden years now cars are just money pits uninteresting ugly looking things. Roads are in a 3rd world state driving is just not enjoyable anymore. Government has sucked all the fun out of it.
I've always felt Ford should bring back a 2024 version of the XR3 and the Fiesta XR2 (round front headlights). 160PS for the Fiesta & 200Ps for the XR3, they were such classic cars that people loved. Make it look similar, strip out all the junk we don't need and sell it for an affordable working mans price.
I applaud what Toyota have done with the GR Yaris, I have just got one reminds me of what cars were like 25-30 years ago, I'm thinking Subaru-and Mitsubishi, it's a real little pocket rocket, ok it has some driver aides but they can be turned off with one button, so fun cars can still be made if the manufacture is brave enough. But I agree it would be nice to see some of the cars from 70's and 80's back but I don't think it will happen due to government meddling, if they do they will probably be electric🙁
I can’t believe a car Like the Ford escort which in its day drove fairly well. I had mk1 mk2 Rs 2000 back in the day I loved my cars, then But I would not be queueing up to buy a replica now most people want something modern to drive. people like you who are diehard Escort Mk1 fans Might think it’s a good idea, but the reason why they only do a limited run is because they know it would not be the Average Joes first choice as an every day run about I like to see them running around, brings back memories, but I wouldn’t wanna buy one now
Ford's No1 best selling "CAR" worldwide of all time is the Ford Escort. Sorry l would be in front of you in the queue to buy a new affordable Mk1 Escort.
I could be wrong but I have a feeling we've all read into this too much. I read on article a month or two ago saying Land Rover was starting to build the old defender again. Great! What they were actually doing however was essentially building a factory restomod of existing defenders, there were no new cars. I have an awful feeling this is what Ford are going to do.
I have heard this conversation before where excitment is displayed about the possiblity of a replica retro car from the 70's/80's. However they always want several updated modern systems with lighting, braking and other modern day systems. This to me isn't the same and is completely missing the point! If they brought back the Ford Capri with anything less than 100% authenticity from that era I would not be interested. I owned several Fords from this era and I loved their shortcomings but they were simple to fix and service and a lot of fun. Cars were once so cheap to own, run and maintain but that is long gone now and it could never be the same as costs to remanufacture this generation of vehicle would be very expensive so sales would inevitably be very low.
There’s a good reason that a reintroduction of a classic vehicle would be produced in limited quantities; and that’s to do with the system of registration. Volume production cars are now required to have a raft of mandatory high-tech equipment such as Electronic Stability Programme, Lane Keep Assistance, speed warnings and suchlike. It is eye-wateringly expensive for a manufacturer to develop these systems - even when it’s carried over from another platform - as well as a huge cost to achieve full vehicle type approval. However, when a vehicle is registered under the Low Volume Approval Scheme, the process is far simpler, less expensive, and much of the ‘driver assistance’ tech is not required. The downside is that production is limited to 500 registrations per year. So, it’s not that the manufacturer necessarily wants to limit the number of people who can buy a niche car; it’s just not economically viable to produce more.
to get a remake of a mk1 Escort to comply with all current safety and emissions would be impossible they were great because of what they were small light easy to throw around. Those qualities are at odds with modern attitudes to safety!
The English motorcycle manufacturer CCM product 150 examples of a certain model, this keeps them within the law to see bikes that don't need to comply with certain reg's. Then they change the bike minutely to then product another 150. This may be the way that these guys will do things.
Think the manufacturing run has to be under 1500 units per year to avoid expensive GB type approval. So will not be mass produced and probably built as customer orders to their spec and will be silly money to achieve any kind of EU crash protection.
Why not make 1,000 mk1 Escorts a year? Same reason Nokia wouldn’t make 1,000 3310’s a year. You’d need a bloody factory instead of a workshop! Manufacturing technology varies with scale, not to mention QC, Jigging, tool making etc. The up-front investment cost would balloon and the management would become a world of headaches. If you can make 1,000 cars you can make 100,000. The only way to do it would be to subcontract manufacture or use a pilot line. Why do you suppose Saab went out of business? Economies of scale.
Limited run so they don’t have to build to modern day safety requirements for mass produced vehicles. It is impossible today to build a 70s car in mass production to comply to the regulations of today. Very unfortunate.
The easiest thing to design on a new car is the name, so pick a popular name and stick in on the next generic motor vehicle they churn out. Job done!!!
Hi If this is a limited run, perhaps ford are testing the market? , tbefore flooding the market with theser gems hough they need to drop the eco boost engine.
The limited run might be the fore-runner to mass production to when the idiocy of Net Zero and EVs collapse. Meanwhile I'll keep my eleven year-old diesel.
Correct, once you research the WEF and their Great Reset agenda, all this crap that's being pushed makes sense. It's one evil plan, no freedom or choice by 2030 if the brainwashed masses don't wake up!
Just another overpriced generic shaped EV, hmmm at those prices it's better to invest in a classic one. A classic that will only ever go up in price. Let's face it, no one wants to buy used EVs. We have all seen how prices drop, and I predict in a few years time people will just be abandoning EVs at the side of the road, fly tipped like an old mattress.
Ltd run, means Lotus or TVR = costly, unreliable and a finish of workmanship below that what we are used to in modern times. All these projects are underfunded, so the tooling needed to mass produce is not a financial option

Btw... the governments of Europe "especially Labour" are now giving financial penalties "fines" to car manufacturers that do not sell a percentage of electric vehicles.
Imagine The Sweeney having to chase this new Jaaag across south London.
It seems a car only fit for Megan Markle...if she had remained a royal.
In a rainbow coloured Hyundai Ioniq 5! 😂
My mate did a nut and bolt rebuild of an RS2000 Mk1, back in 1985. I've got photos of the bodyshell on a trailer when we took it to get painted. He paid less than £1500 for it. I don't know where it is now.
DVLA check the reg if you have it. Worth a tidy fortune now if still about.
Look at who is heavily invested into these car companies and you'll find out why all this is happening.
Had two escorts I wonder what the safety rating would be on these limited run cars and would you be able to convince an insurance company to issue a affordable insurance quote
I agree with all your comments, I think you are absolutely spot on.
A MST is still cheaper than a banana duck taped to a wall. 😎
Well yes...so is my house...and all my 6 cars put together.
What’s a banana duck ? 😀
I like the GR Yaris...expensive though.
I can’t believe a car Like the Ford escort which in its day drove fairly well. I had mk1 mk2 Rs 2000 back in the day I loved my cars, then But I would not be queueing up to buy a replica now most people want something modern to drive. people like you who are diehard Escort Mk1 fans Might think it’s a good idea, but the reason why they only do a limited run is because they know it would not be the Average Joes first choice as an every day run about I like to see them running around, brings back memories, but I wouldn’t wanna buy one now
Dream land. The car market is shagged. Loads of great older vehicles out there 👌
Ford's No1 best selling "CAR" worldwide of all time is the Ford Escort. Sorry l would be in front of you in the queue to buy a new affordable Mk1 Escort.
Erm, I think the Model T may have sold more…..
Google suggests a little over 4 million Escorts, while Model T was over 15 million.
Oh, and I know is not a “CAR”, but Ford have built over 8 million Transits too.
I miss the escorts I had
Yes, makes sense. I did feel that was the reason, but wasn't totally sure.
to get a remake of a mk1 Escort to comply with all current safety and emissions would be impossible they were great because of what they were small light easy to throw around. Those qualities are at odds with modern attitudes to safety!
I don't think it's gonna be the same sort of escort you could take to Burton power prices or drive round Southend circuit
They are posting something about this car next week? The 12th of December?
Are they trying to cut into MST's sales?
You are missing a vital point when it comes to mass production of retro cars. NCAP crash tests!
FFW TO 6:05 if your here for the reason I came here. Dude rattles on and on…
I did apologise for that, but I have opinions...
The English motorcycle manufacturer CCM product 150 examples of a certain model, this keeps them within the law to see bikes that don't need to comply with certain reg's. Then they change the bike minutely to then product another 150. This may be the way that these guys will do things.
I did think that too...afterthought.
Cracking rant 😁
17:39 I have a MK3 Cortina :)
I had a 1971 Mk3 2 litre GXL that I put through various alterations; and used a 2 litre GT as a donor...lol, which I stripped and then scrapped.....
The easiest thing to design on a new car is the name, so pick a popular name and stick in on the next generic motor vehicle they churn out. Job done!!!
New MG little hatchback hybrid 194bhp and no CVT but 3 speed auto,, tested at 0-60 in 6.7sec must be around 20k plus.. Probably built in china etc
Hi If this is a limited run, perhaps ford are testing the market? , tbefore flooding the market with theser gems hough they need to drop the eco boost engine.
I had a m1 1300 GT k reg
😯😯😯❤ 50k you could re build your old car
The limited run might be the fore-runner to mass production to when the idiocy of Net Zero and EVs collapse. Meanwhile I'll keep my eleven year-old diesel.
we can only hope!
MST already doing it.
Al sums look like the been designed on an etchersketch
It will be an EV to comply with the WEF in my opinion.
Correct, once you research the WEF and their Great Reset agenda, all this crap that's being pushed makes sense. It's one evil plan, no freedom or choice by 2030 if the brainwashed masses don't wake up!
if its wet cam belt 3 cylinder , forget it , nothing but engine trouble
Just spend your money on the Mustang & then the real Escort. Everything old becomes new.
Dude AI will be designing vehicles very soon.
Look what they have done to the mustang
You mean the Ford Fusion....lol
So it's either a Chinese knock off or it's entirely built from magnum car panels
Just go to MST
I kniw, but they start at £85k, £174k for the EvoX version. Keen to see the price of this.
Most of that type of person is either on a Segway or an E-scooter , bye bye jaguar , go woke go broke !!!!
Any new cars know all you are doing is buying a badge
Just another overpriced generic shaped EV, hmmm at those prices it's better to invest in a classic one. A classic that will only ever go up in price. Let's face it, no one wants to buy used EVs. We have all seen how prices drop, and I predict in a few years time people will just be abandoning EVs at the side of the road, fly tipped like an old mattress.
I'd rather have a Manta A SR
Ooo, yes!
Ltd run, means Lotus or TVR = costly, unreliable and a finish of workmanship below that what we are used to in modern times.
All these projects are underfunded, so the tooling needed to mass produce is not a financial option
well nobody wants a Draguar
This is a waste of time it’s just like the MG THEY DID £80,000 but you never know
Drone
I wish you were jesting
Christ, don't you love the sound of your own voice 😒
Yeah, because having an opinion and talking about it online never happens....Are you new to TH-cam?
Nah, I enjoy my petrol SUV, these old cars were stupid
