John Weatherspoon (January 27, 1942 - October 29, 2019), better known as John Witherspoon, was an American actor and comedian who performed in various television shows and films.
He is best remembered for his role as Willie Jones for the Friday series; Witherspoon also starred in films such as Hollywood Shuffle (1987), Boomerang (1992), The Five Heartbeats (1991), and Vampire in Brooklyn (1995).[2] He has also made appearances on television shows such as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1994), The Wayans Bros. (1995-99), The Tracy Morgan Show (2003), Barnaby Jones (1973), The Boondocks (2005-2014), and Black Jesus (2014-2019). He wrote a film, From the Old School, in which he played an elderly working man who tries to prevent a neighborhood convenience store from being developed into a strip club.
Witherspoon worked occasionally as a model. During the 1960s and 1970s, he began to take a liking towards comedy. During that time, he began his stand-up comedy career. As a result, he had many friends in the business, including Tim Reid (while he was working on WKRP in Cincinnati and The Richard Pryor Show), Robin Williams (also on The Richard Pryor Show), Jay Leno, and David Letterman.
Witherspoon performed in many feature films (usually comedies), including Friday (and its sequels Next Friday and Friday After Next) as well as Hollywood Shuffle, I'm Gonna Git You Sucka, Bird, Vampire in Brooklyn, and The Meteor Man.
Witherspoon was also known for his over-the-top characters in films such as House Party, in which he played an irritated neighbor who is repeatedly woken up by the party, and Boomerang with Eddie Murphy, where he plays Mr. Jackson, the ill-mannered father of Murphy's best friend.
Witherspoon married Angela Robinson in 1988. They have two sons, John David ("J.D.") and Alexander. David Letterman was Witherspoon's best friend and is the godfather to his two sons.
Witherspoon died of a heart attack at his home in Sherman Oaks, California on October 29, 2019. He was 77 years old. His funeral was held on November 5, 2019, and he was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Hollywood Hills, California.

Spoon was the first person I met when I first landed in LA to do a song for Kobe Bryant back in 2000! We talked all of the way to the baggage claim!! Didn’t try to brush me off and was very interested in what I was doing! True gentleman and legend! RIP to Spoon and Kobe!!!!

Sweet couple and that deer...pretty cool! Every once in a while I'll watch pops TH-cam channel, I really wish I got to see him live. I first saw him as a 10 year old on What’s Happening as a dj on the Disco Dollar Disaster ep. Saw him on a Barnaby Jones ep but my fav character of his is Pops from The Wayans Brothers. Watched it 27 years ago, watch it everyday and own the dvd collection. I was so hurt when my co worker told me he passed. I hoped she was wrong😞😞Shawn Wayans choked up at his funeral when he closed out his eulogy to Pops on his last sentence. Made me cry as if I knew him personally. And for those who don’t know, Pops wife was in the ep where they thought TC was the sweet tooth bandit. She was the policewoman who said, “Please, he’s got a record longer than Diana Ross’s weave.”😂As always, thank u for showing us our favorite celebs final resting place. I appreciate the beautiful vid. R.I.P. Pops.🙏🏾

Ain’t gonna lie.. this cemetery is so big, it’ll take like 3-4 visits to pay your respects to everyone you luv that’s buried there.. am glad to have met John Witherspoon back in 2018 before he passed.. and there’s many people I paid my respect here at this specific Forest lawn.. such as John Ritter, Carrie Fisher, Isabel Sanford, Tom Bosley, James Ingram just to name a few..

Hi Scott, Bang Bang Bang.😁 Mr John Witherspoon, Pops, was more Talented than a lot of people know.That Friday Series was on this weekend. If he can't make you laugh, then something is wrong with you. I didn't know about the song. That song popped up. So I just clicked it. Wow might of been fate. What took you so long😁to finally pay pops some respect. They still show reruns of the wayans. By George. In may on weekends 360 has started showing IN Living Color. I may not know a lot about this amazing man but I started watching all the movies he has been in. He was just funny as Hell. That Bang, Bang, Bang got me everytime. It hasn't been quiet 3 years since he passed. It seems like yesterday when my twin called and told me. I said oh NMAD. It was a shock. Seem he was talented than I knew. Laughter has got me through some rough times. My Mom passed on Memorial Day. On that Day we Celebrate her life. While others are honoring those we lost in wars, 911. We do Remember them. But instead of Greiving her loss. We get together, celebrate, Cook out, watch old home movies.
