As of writing this comment, cloud gaming is the only way to access Fortnite on Mac. However, if you have other cloud gaming services available, you can try Xbox Cloud gaming or Amazon Luna gaming which both support Fortnite.
Im not sure on the details of each service. But GeForce has the free tier unlike Xbox Cloud. However it might be worth looking into what games each service offers before choosing one.

Yes, just connect the controller to your Mac and choose your control method before you load into a game.
