Nice interview interspersed with video clips (edited due to copyright) featuring Mark Knopfler during the middle part of 1997. Jason Roberts hosted a music program each week which featured two guests from the music genre. Paul Rodgers (ex ‘Free & Bad Company”) was the first half guest & Mark’s contribution is the content on this DVD.

I never understand the argument over who is the greatest guitarist. I ubderstand favourites but its hard to gauge the greatest as too many criteria. For me knopfler will always be my personal favourite as he is the one that inspires me the most to pick my guitar up and just try to play it better... he plays like its just another limb. So fluid and natural. And never a bad note

Who can play like him? The sound is one of a kind
For me the difference between Mark and other guitarists is that each of Marks riffs and solos are so pleasing to the ear one does not get bored of listening to them for years and years. Stress the words "each one of them" not just one or two. There is a structure and melody, instead of just sliding up and down the pentatonic notes.

never got the recognition he deserved. i still listen to alchemy live.
I mean 120 album sales with Dire Straits alone. He has won 4 Grammys. And is seen as one of the greatest guitarist of all time.
He might not be as talked about as let’s say Clapton or Hendrix. But he has certainly gotten plenty of recognition.
Alchemy Live is one of the best Live albums ever made. Along with Made In Japan by Deep Purple.

Been watching many videos today . Earlier i was watching pink Floyd and everybody on the comments was like : Gilmour best ever , and nobody will ever top ponk Floyd. Then i was watching Zeppelin . And there it was jimmy page in the comments . An then it was Stevie Ray Vaughan and on and on .And then i come here and it's Mark knopfler . I feel that we're so blessed that all these wonderful musicians gave us all this incredible music .

I don't get that. Mark knopfler is probably one of the most recognized guitar players and musicians in the music world. He's style is very unique from other professional guitar players.

A true musical legend
I was a kid when i first heared the Dire Straits by my elder brothers a long time ago. They played them alot! Now i am 39 and still , in 2018, love the Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler!

Mark is not a fantastic guitar player. He is an incredible musician which includes being an incredible guitar player.
He’s aged very well. And he’s still as good as he was back then. Which is more than what could be said for Kirk Hammett and James Hetfield. (I know, different styles of guitar playing, but still.)

I was an instant fan from the first time I heard "Sultans of Swing". I had already been a big JJ Cale fan for several years, and his influence was undeniable in Mark's style. Others have pointed that out, and Mark himself has said that! Here's Mark covering JJ on the Eric Clapton album "The Breeze".

Mark Knopfler
Steve Morse
Dave Gilmour
Angus Young
Alex Lifeson
Stevie Ray Vaughan
But as for preference I have no particular order - all superb in their own way.
I wonder if MK mentioned JJ Cale beside Dylan as influence.
I grew up listening to his music and played finger style like him when I first started.
It’s a matter of personal taste as to who is the best and at times changes with your mood. Mark Knophler, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Chet Atkins, Steve Howe…list is endless.
No one who could afford a Fender Strat would have become a great guitarist....

I've always heard JJ Cale in his playing,along with fellow Scot Richard Thompson.

He is not Scottish. He was born there, but his mother was English, from Newcastle upon Tyne in the North East of England and his father was Hungarian Jewish. He considers himself Geordie, which is someone from North East England and speaks with a Geordie accent. The North East of England has a great folk music tradition and many musicians started out in folk clubs, including Sting, Chris Rhea and the Animals.
