Maine Storm - January 10, 2024 - Acadia National Park

- On January 10, 2024, the coast of Maine was hammered by one of the biggest storms in living memory. Many coastal areas were flooded by storm surge, roads washed out, buildings along the waterfront literally collapsed into the sea, and I paid a visit to the Ocean Path on Acadia National Park's "Park Loop Road" to see what kind of devastation this storm would have on a few of the most popular national park locations in America: Otter Cliffs, Thunder Hole, and Sand Beech. You will see a large wooden structure lying on Sand Beech toward the end of the video. This is the wreckage of the schooner "Tay" that, until this very storm, was buried under several feet of sand. As you can see from my footage, sometime before I arrived, however, an enormous amount of sand had been washed back into the sea. Until now, the wreckage has not been seen for several generations. I believe this is the first video footage of the shipwreck in at least several decades, maybe ever.

Awesome footage! Thanks for sharing that! Glad you didn’t get hurt.
Sure was some angry seas there! How exciting to be there with n person!! Thnx for sharing!!
Thank you for sharing this video! I’m in the south so getting to see Acadia, even in these conditions, is exciting. Stay safe and have fun!
You should go to Acadia!! It’s my favorite place in the world!!! 🌊💙🌲💙🌊
VERY nice! Awesome video. Thanks!! Jealous even! Would love to have been there. Living in Maine myself, yea, it can be a real blast sometimes. I keep changes of clothes in the car for times like this. Water dries. Chills will warm up. Just don't go swimming. Keep safe and it is well worth the discomforts. Reminds one that they're alive.
WOW! I just absolutely loved your video! How terrifyingly gorgeous! I would have loved to be there too!Your excitement was just wonderful!
I've been to Acadia six times, but never like this. Thanks for the video, and take good care!
You were having just too much fun! I hope you always keep your adventuresome spirit
This was amazing. Thank you!
Amazing..thank you, you’re the best😊
Thank you for becoming water logged to bring us this video! I have family on the Island and have been Blessed to go up for a week or two each summer during the '70s and early '80s and off and on since. I'm also a huge fan of powerful weather. Your video brought two of my loves together. You did an amazing job of making us feel like we were there and kept us dry at the same time! Of course Thunder Hole was my favorite part. T.H. has been one of my favorite stops on the Island since I was a kid. As I mentioned in my comments on another Acadia video, that was back when they allowed people to be idiots and die if they wanted to. Back in the '70s, Thunder Hole didn't have the stairs, platforms and fencing. We scrambled down paths and rocks and only had vertical rebar with a cable running over the tops for the real dangerous areas. Any idiots could go down there during a storm like this and Mother Nature would remove them from the population. What was left was the smarter people (guess I'm lucky to still be here b/c I'm just not that smart!). I can't get the images from your video out of my head. I loved it and will be re-watching many times. Just so cool!
Well, you are very welcome! Love that you enjoyed the profit of my suffering 😂
Amazing footage! I’m really glad you’re safe. 🙏🏼
Great footage thank you!😊
this looks extremely miserable and unpleasant, thank you for recording and sharing
After almost four hours in this, I was SPENT. My hands had almost lost all feeling, to the point (and this is partly why I called it quits) that I legitimately couldn’t press the buttons on my camera without screwing things up constantly.
I'm glad about deciding to garage the kayak that morning...
You're on MDI....stay safe on those trails! I can imagine the roar over at Seawall!..
This reminds me of the October storms up on Lake Superior - without the salt!
The sea was angry that day my friend - like an old man trying to send back soup at a deli. ~ George Castanza
That scene was playing in my head the whole time. 😂
Splendid. Was there in September
WOW! I was there for the hurricane back in Sept and while I got soaked, too, it was nowhere near as intense as this.
Thank you for taking & posting the vid and braving the rain & wind. 👍
That’s what new englanders are made of-tough stuff
Hello Newman I just happened to come across your TH-cam video here in Sedona Arizona on January 14th. I am a Midcoast Maine girl and I'm watching everybody's footage of the storms coming in on the coast holy s***. I absolutely love your whole footage of the waves and the wind and the rain and yeah you be safe young man going out on those wet paths and getting a little too close.. yet holy cow when you kept getting slammed with the waves spraying into your face unexpectedly it was quite exciting and boy did you get some awesome footage of some highfalutin waves yikes. Thank you so much I appreciate you posting sweetheart you take good care of yourself. I'm staying dry out here in Sedona even though it's cold and wet it's gorgeous here. Although I missed the coast of Maine especially during the Summers when I cannot afford to get home. Hopefully this summer will be different 2024
I just came across it too and watching from Apache Junction. I'm from Van Buren Huge waves! What a storm.
Amazing footage. I lived there for 7 years and I am crying watching this. Climate change is a pissah. Christ Jeezus, we are in for it. I am finally delighted Ive never owned waterfront property! And this was the first of 2 storms in one week and the second was worse. 😥
Beautiful and frightening at the same time 🌧🌊🌊🌊🌪
You're brave, I'll give you that, but please take care of yourself when it comes to something like this. Mother Nature🌿 is just impressive and above all she does not forgive carelessness...
(I think you were pretty happy about not being so far ahead at 09:52 😂 pretty close)
Good Job 🤗👍🏻👏🏻
100%
Great job keeping the lense dry!
Super, super, super WOW! 🤩
And the thunderhole! What a thrill! its nearly suberged!
I'm surprised you were even allowed to go out there. I was there a few months ago right after a hurricane. It was beautiful!
there are rangers at the entrance to the Park Loop Road, they aren't out looking for dumb people unless they get an emergency call, probably too late if you are washed out to sea from a rogue wave.
EPIC footage than you for sharing!!! 💜❣️💜 maybe someday you could take us back so we could see it normal?!!!
nice shots! they get even bigger than this, there s photography of waves being up on the road..not just a splash!
You’re a crazy-funny guy! 👍
There’s some monstrous killer waves there WOWW
I was there not too long ago & the Atlantic looked like it was boiling in some areas
On the one hand, it's a shame they close the park loop when the weather is bad. So last time we were there when it was stormy we were on our way to Canada and didn't have time to hike in. On the other hand, people are idiots and would be down on the stairs at Thunder Hole and getting swept away. Thanks for this, I always wondered what it would be like in a big storm.
Never turn your back on the ocean. Once you get swept off your feet, you are swept out to sea.
Back wasn’t turned. The camera is handheld, so I’m not always looking where it is pointed.
It's called "the ocean" and it is not always Sunday in July at the sunny beach. The ocean can be a fearsome spectacle.
OK, question: how would you rate your jacket for this sort of weather? I'm going to be in the market for some foul weather clothing for this sort of outing and I'm checking out different brands. How was it for warmth and dryness, if you don't mind my asking?
I got that jacket on Amazon. In the winter, it is SUPER warm. However…in *this* storm, it was so unbelievably wet, as you can see, that it became saturated. I was soaked all the way down to my skivvies. Even so, in ordinary weather, it is a great jacket for the money. Very warm.
@@HelloNewman Thank you for the info. I've got something for warmth but need some sort of slicker to keep dry, if possible. I'll keep looking.
How's it feel to be Jim Cantore?
Hey Newman, do you have an email address we can use to contact you regarding this video? I'd love to discuss a license to use this if possible! Cheers, Felix
An evil ex of mines birthday is Jan. 10th . So you might want to be extra careful on that day.
😅
When your camera lens needs a windshield wiper...
I have to question your judgment.
thank you go get dry
Are these waves related to the eruption on iceland?
Jealous !
Oh for god's sake shut up and stand still! Next time let the footage speak for itself.
Lol. I will do whatever I please. But thank you for your suggestion, Mr. Spielberg.
