As always great content! I was wondering if you could do a video on governors, especially with secret societies in the mix.

    • @GamerGrampz
      @GamerGrampz  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks Michael, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
I do have both a Standard Game Governor video on my list of 60+ videos I'm working on as well as a Secret Societies based one.
I'll move the Secret Societies one up towards the top of the list though since I have a Sanguine Pact Guide that I just finished a script for this morning so it will tie in well as a complementary video.
      Thanks for the feedback! :)

Great stuff. I appreciate the effort/research you obviously put into this. I don't want to sound like I'm bashing it; it is great content, but I feel it's very oversimplified.
I acknowledge that you mentioned that this tactic applies to peaceful games; I would recommend that you explain why - and that is because it assumes that all of these units survive the entirety of the game. Now I've had all-out domination games on deity, most of them in fact, without losing a single unit, but things happen during a game and filling out this checklist for the sole purpose of reaping the reward described can lead to investing in a lot of units, production that could be used elsewhere, and also paying maintenance for them every turn (more on that later.) Great example here is the catapults, which are bad scouting units as well as bad defensive units and really don't serve a purpose other than taking cities, which is not the intended strat for this tactic and they could be lost even peacefully to a bad disaster result. And yes, making the units exclusively for the intention of fulfilling this quest does have several tangential benefits (first meets, more huts, circumnav, and most importantly raising your "Don't Tread on Me" military score.)
Also, there's several ways in which this treats yields (i.e. a single production, science, culture, faith, or gold unit) as if the value of that yield is static throughout the game, when they really aren't. While looking at the "total number of beakers and culture-thingys" that you're saving is technically true, it's quite misleading as it implies that, for example, hitting the machinery eureka (saving 110 beakers) is only 1/5 as valuable as hitting the Combined Arms eureka (saving 592 beakers), when we both know that the benefit that X-bows provide at that time is much more valuable than anything provided by Combined Arms during that later time. Much more applicable to gameplay to consider the total number or eurekaspirations than the total number of beakers. It's very much "spend 5 dollars now to earn 50 dollars later" when you currently only have 5 dollars to your name (and you're hungry), and you will be rewarded the $50 when you're getting 200 dollars per turn anyway. Great example here is having 3 heavy chariots. That means spending 195 hammers, which is half of the cost of the Colossus (which would help you pay the maintenance for all these units you're building) and having three for the sake of the eureka doesn't pay off until Composites, and many cultural, religious (and domination) games are finished before hitting this tech, so it never pays off. Yes, getting the earlier units and upgrading is more efficient than hard-building the upgrades, but when the upgrades become available you have more cities that are larger with more infrastructure to make that higher cost still a much lower percentage of your output at the time.
And then there's the aforementioned main antagonist point to this strat - maintenance. You're paying gold per turn, every turn, on the units that won't reap the eureka rewards until later, sometimes much later. 2 galleys, 1 spearman, and 3 catapults have a combined maintenance cost of 9 GPT, and when you added the 3 newly-upgraded archers and swordsman, this now becomes 18 GPT which again, in the late-game when you're making 2500 GPT is inconsequential, but it comes at a time when your making more like 15-50 GPT. By upgrading to keep your military score on point, you're also spending strategic resources which could otherwise be sold. And later with the units that consume resources per turn, you could accidentally lock yourself out of being able to have some power plants because your coal and oil is maintaining the units which sometimes still haven't paid off the eureka they're eventually going to provide.
Oh, side note - you really should point out that the eurekaspirations that are triggered by "kill a unit with (X unit) are also triggered if that unit takes a city. This really helps as the RNG will often round up or down a little bit on an attack so when you pop something with a X-bow to prep for killing with a knight, the X-bow will sometimes kill the unit accidentally or the knight misses the kill by a HP or two. With a city, you attack with everything until it gets really low, then pop it with ranged and siege units until it's at 0 HP (sometimes it's hard to see whether there's a sliver of health or not, you know the city is at 0 HP when the ranged unit doesn't receive experience for the attack) and then the (X unit) will always take the city if the city is at 0 HP, even if the (X unit) only has 1 HP itself.
Another note: if people are playing GS or later versions of the game, the agoge part is correct. But I remember in earlier versions of the game, it was very strict about agoge only affecting units that are unlocked with ancient or classical techs, and as warriors and slingers (as well as war carts, eagle warriors, etc) are unlocked from the start of the game without being unlocked with an ancient or classical tech, they were, I guess "pre-ancient" units and did not receive production bonus through agoge.
I'd summarize by saying that making this list isn't necessarily a bad idea for beginners, but it's usually more beneficial to weigh out the cost:benefit ratio of builds and tech-pathing, and the earlier it is the more important this is. Beginners should keep an eye on upcoming eurekaspirations and figure out how long it's going to take to trigger them, and devise tech-pathing that allows the needed time to trigger them. There are select times when the benefits from spending the extra time to get a tech earlier without the bonus is worth it, like for a strategy-centric wonder or a unit that will save you from a swarming neighbor. Most of the time though, it is often worth it to get techs that are boosted but not as needed earlier than desired techs which you need a few turns to trigger that eureka (ahem... printing... ahem) For advanced players, having all of the eurekas and inspirations memorized and using that knowledge to more efficiently get through the tech and civics trees is beneficial. I'd also point out that if the main reason you're getting these units is to hit these boosts, the focus should be more on getting them right before they obsolete rather than as soon as they are unlocked, as once again since you have more stuff to make more stuff later, you're allocating a smaller percentage of your total resources to make that gain.
    Cheers!

@@GamerGrampz OK so I commented on this response but posted it under the wrong comment (Miguel Estevez's), then left a reply to this comment apologizing for the oopsie, then I figured out how to delete the first comment but now can't find the 2nd comment to delete it, Apologies, I'm an old fart!
What I wanted to say it that it's allllll good! I acknowledge that most YT comments are off-the-cuff responses to the video which can be addressed with an off-the-cuff reply. Whereas my comments are after watching the video 3 times, watching it a 4th time while pausing and taking notes, watching it a fifth time while pausing to check Civfanatics, CivWiki, and other resources for accuracy and applicability, then starting the comment while referencing parts of the video, then proof-reading, then reading again while attempting to take the perspective of the comment's recipient and adjusting accordingly. I totally understand that it takes more time to respond to all of that and that you have other things going on- if it takes you a week or a month to respond to my babbling I would not feel neglected, ignored, or slighted at all! I do appreciate how highly you prioritize getting back to everyone who comments, all while posting as much content as you do all while having a life, and I also totally understand that some days you want to just grab a few beers and chill!
The previous comment was pretty much playing Devil's Advocate. What I do in most games is pretty close to what you're describing, and I hit all but 1 or 2 Eurekas, except when it gets to the point where they can only be triggered by GS, and I finish the game before that point in all but science and diplomatic games, if you have any advice on consistently triggering those Eurekas, I'm all ears. It's just that making an actual list and trying to check off all the boxes may be diverting your attention (and resources) from some other important things...
      Cheers!

Hey Ronnie, yeah I have a bunch of different mods I use. Concise UI is the one that changes the city-state panel, and then I think it's Sukritact's Simple UI Adjustments that does what you're talking about for the City Center changes.
You can find all the UI mods I use and the features that I like in them here in this video: th-cam.com/video/u2MY6dR3z7U/w-d-xo.html

Why do I want 3 units?

Sorry for the late reply, Zach. I haven't been on this channel for like three years until just the other day. I officially started it back up. Otherwise I would have gotten back to you a lot sooner than two years. Well, II guess whether you want three units or not all depends on whether you want to get through the tech tree faster or not

Hey man, thanks for taking the time to leave the comment. I definitely appreciate it. I'm sorry it took me this long to reply to you. I just honestly haven't been on this channel in over three years now for personal reasons. I just started it back up and running again this week though, and there's some new content out now and we'll be regularly going forward if you are still interested in civilization 6. anyway, hopefully life's treated you well since you left this comment and you're doing pretty good now too take care.

Appreciate you taking the time to leave the feedback. I am going to be re filming the fanatical blurb because I think it drones on too long in its current form.
That being said, if you have a problem with a 15 second CTA about liking the video and a short message that helps me actually earn a bit of money back for the time I invest in the channel than I'd probably suggest you look elsewhere for your Civ content.
I'd recommend TheGameMechanic or SaxyGamer as good places to start where the channel's also have a similar focus on teaching and instruction etc
      Take care! :)

@@Skacy69 No problem at all man, I didn't mean for that to come across as "fuck off go watch other youtubers then" lol
It's just that it's very hard to make any money directly from TH-cam until your channel hits like 50-100k subs so you have to make money somehow and part of the way I do that is through affiliate links, and the comission from Fanatical.
This video took literally about 12 hours to make between writing the script, doing the research, and filming and editing etc so from my point of view if people want to get the information I'm offering then they can cringe and suck it up and just deal with a 40 second commercial advertising an easy way that my community can help me pay the bills since TH-cam itself certainly isn't lol

@@Skacy69 No problem at all. I'm definitely okay with hearing criticism and look forward to it actually because I do want to get better and put more enjoyable content out there.
Just sometimes the reply to the criticism isn't going to be what the person who commented wants to hear, and so that's why I suggested those channels is because they make good stuff and I realize that my channel might not be for everybody.
Glad that you enjoy the channel though and I do hope you stick around. That Fanatical ad is on my list to redo it and shorten it, but honestly with all of the stuff I have planned I'm probably not going to have a chance to get to that and re film it for another week or two.
It's constructive criticism like yours that made me realize that it is too long in it's current state and I need to tighten it up so I still have it included and it helps to generate money for me but the message is more direct and straight forward so it isn't such a significant interruption to the flow of the videos it is in.

Oh, that's sweet. I'm glad you took the time to leave a comment on my video. Appreciate the help. Sorry it took me so long to reply to your comment though. I just honestly haven't been on this channel in over three years now for personal reasons. I started it back up again this past week though, and there's some new content out now and we'll be regularly going forward. If you're still interested in civilization 6. anyway, despite you leaving the **** comment. I still hope you're doing well these days. Take care.
