    I put three wheel nuts back on to keep the drum in place when adjusting the shoes & turn the rotor with a big screwdriver/bar. Toyota service bulletin for the VDJ79R says tighten them up until the drum doesn't move then back them off 8 clicks. I found 4 clicks better as 8 was too much. The aftermarket BENDIX replacement handbrake shoes are a poor radius fit in new brake rotors & only contact 50% to 65% of the braking surface when new so they don't work at all almost, I had to extensively bed them in with rolling handbrake applications & adjust them several times, now they work 100%. Be sure to back right off the 10mm adjustment nuts on the end of the handbrake cable up in the cab on the lever and adjust from the rotors back through the system if your replacing the handbrake shoes. I found some of the SUPERIOR Engineering extended dogbones work better than stock ones, pay careful attention to how the stock ones sit before removing, the laser cut SUPERIOR Engineering logo will go face down on one side on my set of extended dogbones. Toyota service bulletin says your looking to get 7-8 clicks lift max. until tight on the handbrake lever & you get that final adjustment by adjusting that 10mm nut/s on the end of the cable on the handrake lever in the cab. My Toyota Landcruiser VDJ79R handbrake works well now........ But I still leave it in gear when parked & I will buy genuine Toyota handbrake shoes next time.

      @@TeamBulletOffroad The other thing I should add is that you should have a spring kit that includes those round hats that push on over the brake shoe retainer pins and spring & twist 90 degrees as they are almost always worn out in the pin head location. Toyota wants a pretty penny for them & they are available online with the spring kit cheaper.

    Nice video mate. I have maintenance time approaching soon. Bad part with my Challenger is on these v6 engines you have to spilt the inlet manifold to change the spark plugs. I haven't done it yet but I will be putting iriduim plug in. Then I have to grease everything before we go to Fraser in late Sept

    I ended up putting a disc brake handbrake kit on the tail shaft of my hilux its amazing works well ,as once the drums clog up with mud on the tracks got no handbrake.
    Toyota service is very poor that when you go to a dealership you don’t get to talk to the guy working on your car but a salesman telling you bs.

    Hey mate, can you do a detailed ruf conversion on an ln106 with all the tips and tricks. I see so many people asking for more info on Facebook groups etc because information about it is so hard to find. A detailed video from Start to finish would be awesome!

    have you tried the handbrake dog-bone upgrade, it replaces the standard dog-bone in at the pads across from the adjuster with a longer one , just curious if you had or what your thoughts are with it,

    Quick question I do all my own repairs and adjustments
    But with a new car I know you know what your doing but won't Toyota not warranty it if something happens
    Just a question want to get a brand new one but I don't really want to get bumsteered cheers mate 👍🏻

      Depends on the situation and qualifications of who's actually in charge of stamping that book, the agreement/contract states certain things, all genuine parts must be used too. Ive got this one covered, been there done that sort of thing with Toyota in the past..

    Hey mate, quick question, i have a 79 that carries some decent load and spends 80% of its time offroad water mud etc, how often would you be changing the wheel bearings? And how often would you adjust them.
    Thanks

    • @dustyfarmer
      @dustyfarmer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I pull the free wheeling hub cap off & check for water in there, it seems to collect in the end cap if it's present elsewhere in the swivel hub too. I did heaps of water crossings and long water puddles on sealed roads during flooding a year ago and managed to blast water into my swivel hub joints, Great fun blasting water high into the air & cleaning under the car. Replacing water damaged wheel bearings & removing & repacking swivel hubs not so much. I stay out of water as much as I can now. If you are frequently adjusting wheel bearings they are wearing, probably from water contaminated grease or the bearing is failing due to that.
