  • I've got a single malt scotch whisky from Port Askaig today. It's whisky from an undisclosed Islay distillery that definitely isn't Caol Ila. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

    Port Askaig is solid. Budget peat bomb. Fair rating. It is not supposed to be nuanced or complex. Just a decent, well priced peated whisky.
    I have heard that the younger port askaigs are from Caol Ila and older ones are from Laphroaig. I had a port askaig 28 recently. Lovely stuff! Might suit your distinguished taste better. Btw, have you considered using a monocle while reading bottle labels? I hear that is essential among the upper crust of the Maltiverse.

    Good one Geoff! We did a vertical of Port Askaig recently with 8, 16, 100 proof, 12 Autumn and 12 Spring. The 16 won the night and the second place was shared between 12 Autumn and 100 proof. I agree that this one is a bit too young but the 16 and the 12s are delightful. Cheers!

    I'm a big fan of Port Askaig 110 Proof. Not complex, but the flavors (peat smoke, vanilla, citrus) are great and have a great punch.

    Finished Askaig 8 a couple of days ago.
    An excellent bottle, which was apparently aged in glass barrels 😁
    Now I want to compare Askaig 100 and Barrel-strength Scarabus...

      I had bottles of the 100 Proof and the Scarabus batch proof and was able to A-B them. The Port Askaig was superior. More going on with it, with a little more age and less raw than the Scarabus.

    another great review. I bought a mini of this and gave it a pretty high score last October (3.9/5), but could only give it 2 reviews when I need 5~7 reviews just to feel more or less comfortable with my perceptions. All I can really say is that my tastes are evolving and there are a fair number of bottles that don't hit the same way.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well to be fair... plenty of seasoned whisky drinkers swear by this stuff. Tastes don't always have to match... maybe this one suits you just fine. It just doesn't happen to be my preferred style. Cheers buddy! 🥃

      @@Gwhisky no doubt. I bought my first 18yr with the Glen Scotia 18 and plan on buying a bottle of the Ledaig 18 and AnCnoc 18 later on through a UK website. After scouring your video's, I listed your scores for all 18 year bottles you reviewed and those last 2 bottles, you are very loosely "diametrically opposed" to the general consensus on whiskybase. (93 v 85 for the Ledaig 18 and 88/89 v 87 for the AnCnoc). I suspect you are using a greater part of the bandwidth of that '100pt' wine scale while Whiskybase aggregate scores tend to use a much narrower segment for a variety of reasons.
      I can't wait to see how those will pan out for me.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  ปีที่แล้ว

      @trainsar eevil Whiskybase in particular is a tough crowd. Very few whiskies ever break 90. For me, Ledaig 18 is easily a 90+ point whisky. I'm sure you'll love it! 🥃

    I bought the US 110 proof accidentally a few years ago. Ralfy recommended the 10 year and I got confused.
    To be honest it was $65 and that was a lot at the time for me (Ardbeg10 was $42) it was also the first of the genre. Now 55% is standard fare.
    Alot cleaner that Ardbeg10 but no complaints. The 10 year special release is nice too. Nothing particularly special.
    I think my favorite Caol Ila is Flaming Heart 6.

  • @DJMJRyder

    If you're trying out NAS Cask Strength unnamed Islay, you've got to try The Ileach cask strength. It's miles ahead of the competition! I had it on a tasting of huge heavy hitters like Lagavulin 12 and Laphroaig 10 cask strength and it held its own, with some lovely tropical notes to boot

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  ปีที่แล้ว

      I've reviewed the Ileach before. Can't say I was impressed with that one either. Ultimately, it's just not a style that I really connect with, it seems. Finlaggan is my go-to NAS cask strength. 🥃

      I did hear Roy make a negative comment about the Finlaggan but so what if he’s moved on to Macallan or Dalmore! Finlaggan Cask strength is decent ant the red wine finish at 46% is better than most.

    Thank you for the review.
    Even though I have other whiskys I like more, I do really like this. I don't mind the youthness. I like coming back to this.
    I like the mouthfeel, the flavour punch, the sweetness and the freshness together with the peat smoke. 😋
    The original Caol Ila 12 is more balanced, but it lacks the umphf with only 43%, and feels thin and watery. Even The Ileach original with 40% feels thicker, even though it lacks depth.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that it's better presented than the Regular Caol Ilas at 43%. Nice to have a naturally presented option with a decent abv. I don't love this one, but that's more. a result of me not loving the style overall. 🥃

    I wonder how you’d re-review the Ardbeg Wee Beastie compared to this. Seems like they might be comparable despite one being a “mystery” Islay. I quite enjoy my WB and in my market I can grab a WB for ~$15 less than the Port Askaig. Seems like a no brainier to pass on this one for me.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Fabio. Yeah the Wee Beastie is good stuff. There's young and rough, and there's well-done young whiskies. I have no problem with younger whiskies. It's all a matter of execution. Cheers! 🥃

      @@Gwhisky so...what its mean? Your taste/palate is consistent or Port Askaig is consistent? 😋 pretty sure both. Someone in comment section says Port Askaig 8 is better because is more matured. I think its depends of personal preferences. I appreciate age statement(10+) in whisky but as a peat lover like young age and have no problem with young peaty whiskies when them arent too young and spirit driven drams. In other hand someone else said Port Askaig 8 is bit flat soft even mediocre(45.8%) Talisker? No. 101% No. All we know this is Caol Ila. When you go to online site MALT you find F2F review of Port Askaig 8 and Lagavulin 8 and John, man who done this review rates Port Askaig 8/10 but Laga8 only 5/10. So its very interesting. 😁🥂🙋🏻‍♂️

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @PeatBüll Hah well my palate definitely isn't always consistent, but it seems to be consistent here, and the whisky is doing the same thing as my last bottle.
      Just checked Malt review. Interesting results! I love the Lagavulin and I'd place it over the Askaig any day. Matter of taste! 🥃

    Hi Geoff! I think you are just a little too harsh on this masked Caol Ila (did you know some other Askaigs, notably the older ones, can be Bunnahabhain?). It is a tad on the sweet side, but for me it’s a BFYB that is a favourite go-to as a punchy second dram, after I’ve had an older complex whisky and just want something to top it off, as it were. I love almost everything that Elixir Distillers puts out, it’s a great Independent Bottler! By the way: reading glasses? Really? At your age? Also: is that a Thomson Bro’s blended malt I spotted in the background? Cheers!

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you're a fan, Wouter. Not my preferred style, although I don't have an issue with a NAS CS peat bombs. I've had better luck with the likes of Finlaggan, which I found much more balanced than this. Yes... working on a bottle of Thompson Bros TB/BSW 6 Year Old. Not bad.
      Oh, and those aren't just reading glasses... they're on all day! 🥃

    I had a bottle of this (well, the 110 proof) at the time of your previous review. I’m going to make the same comment I made back then : this one is very expensive in Oregon, $79.95. More expensive than Ardbeg 10, Port Charlotte 10, Talisker 10, Ledaig 10, you name it. It wasn’t bad, I actually liked it towards the end of the bottle, but I don’t think it’s worth the money. One of my liquor stores has a 12 year old , bourbon and sherry cask, which sounds interesting but it’s $115 !!. It’s an easy pass for me.

    Having gone past the no-name cask strength peated whisky phase, these types of beverage fall flat for me nowadays. But, these punchy bottles have their place and are certainly something to experience on anyone's journey.
