I was hiding in a hole being super awkward and shy at video marketing world several years ago and was blessed to have uncle rafiti come up and say hi. Exact same person I see in every one of these videos, I can absolutely attest to the genuine and authentic personality here. And I want one of these hats so that I can destroy it in a fishing video properly!
I'm not entirely against scripting, particularly for anyone just getting started on camera. Sometimes there's a fear similar to stage fright, and a script helps. Natural delivery comes with practice.
I try not to have a verbatim script but I need pointers. When I wing-it the lack of preparation shows (or it takes so many takes that the energy has gone) but for tutorials people want the good stuff and they want it to be concise.
First of all: Yes! Teachers HAVE to be doers, they need to have experience. Learn from someone that is in the place you wanna be and learn from THAT teacher. Second, other people said: It depends on your niche. Is your content educational, comedy skits, commentary, gaming? Personally, I don't think it really matters. You need to BE YOURSELF but at the same time, you need to be ENTERTAINING. People may like your content but you need to consistent which means SCRIPTING, or at least rough script or BULLLET POINTS. It is not manipulative to talk at a certain way, it's called being prepared, and being a good content creator. For someone to be good content creator, they need to understand that consistency is KEY. Having fun is very important, but not the whole point. What if I'm not sarcastic, silly, goofy, fun? That's the point where you need to understand that the combination of writing yourself as sarcastic, silly, goofy, fun(of course it's an examples of traits) and be yourself at the same time is the way to go. They are not opposite, but different sides of the same coin. Plan ahead, write yourself funnier/ serious/ Authoritative/ competitive whatever you like. If you notice that it takes a toll on you, and you see that you're not having fun making the content that you like to consume, maybe it's not your niche, or maybe it not right for you to be a creator. If the person that you write yourself to be contradicts the person that you are, you're in the wrong place. I believe that the best option is be yourself first of all and tweak it. You're extrovert? Be extrovert and plan accordingly. You're introvert? Be introvert and plan accordingly. Dan Harmon's story circle is great general template for making any kind of videos. I like being stupid but there needs to be consequences. For example: My stupidity also needs to get me into trouble. So I will plan accordingly and I'll do or say stupid stuff, but interesting stupid stuff. If I make Beat Saber videos, I'll not choose only stupid maps, I'll also choose maps that contradict it, and my stupidity will be an obstacle that prevent me from winning so I need to stop being stupid but end with a stupid note at the end of the video/ map. Important note: Make sure that you make videos that you would like to consume yourself.
I can confirm Scott is the exact same on cam as on call though I’ve only really done voice notes. Also, I was having accidental success, and Scott pointed out the concept that was making these videos work. I applied that concept by changing a title on a video that had 10k views after 10 months. The CTR went from 4 to 12% and it got a million views in the next month.
lol. 😂 for me personally it was very difficult speaking to a camera “in the beginning” but let me explain why. I have absolutely no problem speaking in public. Or in large settings. I’m also a church drummer 🥁. The problem I had when filming was the fact that there is no audience. When I’m speaking and crack a joke. There is no laughter. When I ask a question the is no reply. lol I’m literally talking to myself. It’s later in the comments when I get a reply. Anyway. lol that was the difficult part for me. Talking to myself and moving along with a conversation where you get no immediate feedback. Now going live is completely different.
I don't have time to script. I almost don't have time to make content. I am lucky to get a short out from time to time or a live stream at a random time and place which is not good. I have talked with people that watch my content I know in real life and my family and they have asked "What is wrong?" "Why do you seem strange" that the person is not me. One friend told me to "Turn it up to 12 and then maybe you will come through more in your content" I have thought about scripting to help me get more me out there.
I guess it depends on the niche, but if you are teaching stuff then authenticity is key. However, if you are making comedy skits, travel content, etc... people want a more dramatized presentation. In the space where people are coming to TH-cam to escape reality.... your video needs to be bigger than reality and paint a better experience.
Well said, authenticity is gradually fading away from TH-cam and the algorithm (audience) want creators to be themselves on screen. I won't wish to meet any creator on TH-cam who isn't natural off camera even though I believe in writing TH-cam video scripts. It saves you a lot a blabbing if aren't a fluent speaker which is another avenue to come natural. I haven't had a call with you though, would really love to🙂 but I believe you'll be the exact character I'm watching on screen😂
Some people are also very successful with playing a persona... Mostly people who do skits, comedy and gaming. Everyone knows its a fake persona, but it still works. I'd guess even Mr.Beast is a persona, that's probably not how Jimmy would be on a call 😂 Educational content of course needs authenticity
I just passed the 1k mark on subs on my channel. And it’s thanks to exactly what you’re talking about here. I realized this. I used to script. And even I during editing would notice how robotic I was. I stopped it. Bam! Success! Though my watch hours still stink. I feel like as the subscribers count rise and the views go up it’s working on increasing the watch hours too. If people watch just a bit but I grow that that number of views then it adds up. And I’ve been doing that through being authentic. Being me. I spilled it all. My flaws. My human side. My imperfectness. And people actually resonated with that as opposed to the polished scripts. And the reason why I follow this channel is because I like that Raf here doesn’t hold back. If there is ever anything I disagree with at least I know his position and I respect that. Disagreement is ok. And a lot of people can’t grasp that. (By the way I don’t have anything I disagree with Raf at least not at this point). As always love the information and looking forward to your next upload!
I know the course you're talking about lol. The scripting part I stopped doing in my last video outside of one part and it was the most fun I had. I felt more like it was me than a robot like you said.
Question, now don't take this the wrong way, I watch your videos all the time and I like your channel but if you're advice is so good and you've built channels with hundreds of thousands of the subscribers why is this channel so small,? I have free channels and two of them get a couple or several thousand views when I post a video but seems like you're in the same boat, The channel that I'm logged into righ all the videos are kind of hit and miss on how they do but, I noticed you say you've grown many channels and I think you have like a business that's supposed to grow channels but seems to me like no matter who's giving TH-cam advice there's no guarantees that any of that's going to work I truly feel like if people like the personality and whatever you're making times in about if you can put that in the way that they relate to and they find entertaining then they're going to come back so I really think it's more about personality and being good at speaking than anything else I mean I'm not the world's greatest speaker, not always super good with words so I don't know
I couldn't agreed more on this subject. I'm not going to use click bait. I'm not going to be cryptic on my titles to create intrigue. I'm a sculpting channel and this is what I made. Want to see it? Then click!😁
I wondered when you will make your hats available. Sign me up for a hat, you are my bro! 💪 i appreciate your authenticity and also thanks for the value 🙏
I am diagnosed with dislexya so i have my real voice cloned but i also have purchased a professional commercial licenced real voiceover in which cost me well close to $1900 a year and because of that i am ablle to get my message out in a professional sounding matter and the viewers an comprehend and understand what I am saying or what i am selling about, so if it works then work it, but if it dosent then work at it till it does.
I never have scripted ...into the jouney 18 months and have 1500 subs or so.... I know my niche so scripting felt clunky. I never was able to do it and sound like ME
I think there are always going to be different versions of ourselves. I'm the same person in real life that I am in my livestreams, but I'm way turned down when I'm off screen. I'm probably the quietest person in the room, but you might not think so based on my streaming personality. But it's still MY personality, I'm not acting - everyone "acts" differently depending on context of the situation they're in. But ultimately you still act from within the same place. The difference is when you start acting from a place you know isn't you, because you think you'll get something from doing it. And you'll definitely feel (probably as a form of insecurity).

Can confirm: You are 11% funnier on Google meet calls
I need to see a graph 😂

You have no choice is a brilliant hook 😁
I'm one of those ones that's an introvert, but an extrovert in customer service (it's, ultimately, exhausting to me).

I always appreciate your content, Scott. Thank you for being genuine.
Simple but effective quote at the end, thanks Raff!
This is why I follow you you keep it real! People can SMELL FAKENESS a mile away! Good video Simon!
Who do you study or learned from?
Yes! You are definitely the same in person and on video!
Subbed
I love your work uncle Raf😁
Always debunking the TH-cam myths, cheers from Nigeria 🇳🇬

Fun to be in the first 300 views! Always love your take on all things TH-cam.
Such great points and it really inspires me to stay genuine and true to myself.

What is the source please or the name of the channal
I script …. but go off script and that’s where the magic happens! 💫

Like the Hat, but that play button to me 🤷🏻♀ seems like more yellow than green
I thought that it was yellow, too! 😅

This is a good video!!
Get us hats!
Yo Scott , I will support and grab a hat. Keep me in mind bro! Is it a snap back or a fitted hat?
If I dont get a hat, I'm rioting.
Yooooo i've been watching your videos haven't commented till now lol but ayee that is fire and i like what it represents. I gotta have one now ^_^
I wondered when you will make your hats available. Sign me up for a hat, you are my bro! 💪 i appreciate your authenticity and also thanks for the value 🙏
I called to a staff
Im up for the hat… but i sit in Europe
You hooked me xD 😂

You told me via email that my content offered no value. I guess that makes you authentic. No BS here, folks. Signed: (Reginald)...
I hate how TH-cam has become manipulative and you're told you have to be completely inauthentic and make videos your audience likes. No thanks.
I never have scripted ...into the jouney 18 months and have 1500 subs or so....
I know my niche so scripting felt clunky. I never was able to do it and sound like ME
I never script my videos. I try to be as real as possible. Later bro 🤙
What if we our authentic self in front of the camera but with the volume turned up so to speak?
I think there are always going to be different versions of ourselves. I'm the same person in real life that I am in my livestreams, but I'm way turned down when I'm off screen. Money over views, but then you make a video shorter than 8 min where youtube won't put ads 😅
TH-cam definitely puts ads on videos shorter than 8 min. They dont ad "mid roll" ad options unless a video reaches 8 min.
Hey,
Has anyone tried using the TH-cam promotion tab to promote their videos? Is it effective? I'd love to hear your experiences!
Me want hat
They won’t last long
If you could speak french you would love my content 😂😂😂
