My two favourite woodworking youtubers collaborating! I hope there’s time for some pattern plywood to be integrated somewhere and a cocktail tutorial for the first launch from Jason! Fantastic work getting so much done in 2 1/2 days! Can’t wait for part 2!
As someone who loves watching content from the school of wooden boat building (NWboatschool) and Sampson boat co it was super fun to watch a more loose and smaller take on boat building! I would love to hear a boat builders take on this and what they would do differently, but I also think that this is a good testament to how even very complicated projects can be tackled when you have a progress over perfection mindset. Great work so far and looking forward to part 2!
Hey fellas, well done! You started the idea well, the spine is called a keel. And yes the best way is to build off the keel out and up. What term your looking for is a shipwright (wooden + sail ships) vs ship builder (steel) i know, i was a shipbuilder once.
@8:05 - I loved how you show the reality of just staring, thinking, & brainstorming. Entertaining. Gave me a laugh. Yet I totally relate to those “stop & stare” moment. 🖤👍🏼
Great build guys! The build is very much like a lite-ply RC airboat I built back in the 80's. I love seeing how you guys tackled building a boat having no boat building knowledge. Well done! Looks beautiful.
Michael I loved this colab with Jason. I’ve been waiting for it since before Covid, he mentioned possibly doing a project with you. It was really interesting seeing the same content from 2 different creators point of view/style. I don’t wanna hurt Jas-uh-er-um anyone’s feelings but I was surprised which video I liked more given the same lighting, setting, sound, project, tools, etc, and just the story, voice over, film editing, etc to set them apart. I can’t wait till the next part!
This project is absolutely insane! Amazing collaboration you two! Maybe one of these days I'll grow a big enough channel to be able to do some cool collabs :)
I clicked so fast! You've been teasing us far too long on this built and now another week? I'll patiently wait, the ~appetizer was amazing and you we're clearly having fun :) superb watch, as always
I'd love to see a boat made the same only the boat you just made being a 1/4 the size of the new boat. Of course 10 times motor size. A 40 🐴 🐎 HP.. It should make 30 knots. I noticed you trying to get the boat tomorrow plane by spreading the wait towards the bow.. lol 😆. I made my first boat a hydroplane at the age of ten. Great job guys.
I worked for a very high end sailboat builder for a decade. I didn't really pay attention to the names of the parts, but I do remember 'stem to stern' and 'frames' or 'stations". The guy doing the stem spent a lot of time kind of winging it, or that's what it looked like to me. We didn't use nails, just epoxy. But I am really enjoying watching you building your boat. When do you get to the sanding part?
after clamping two planks to a table and thinking about the basics 1:55 you know, we‘re at the point, if we do this well enough, it‘ll actually be a cool boat XD
I would have epoxied all part individually before gluing together. Water and salt goes everywhere withing wood. And yes boat builders would use copper or fiberglass nails.
Dashboard - Correct me if I'm wrong but you don't get mud splashing from dashing horses when you're piloting a boat, so I suggest it has a different name :)
@@MichaelAlm Thought so, Alm= Elm(tree), suitable name for a woodworker👍! Looking forward to part 2 of your boatbuild, take care over there, Peter (woodworker 😎)
Dude, I loved this video! It was SO cool to see how you and Bourbon Moth both made your own style of video of the exact same project. I don't think I've ever seen a collab like that. I think it was a brave decision. I can't wait to see how your boat turns out. I've built two boats and am about to embark on a third, long-form build on my channel TH-cam.com/c/MidnightMaker. Yours is turning out amazingly well for not having plans. BTW, I'm just off Green Lake in Seattle. Take care...
7:23 a boatbuilder lofts their design. That means they draw it full size on the floor and fiddle with the lines until they look right. Your jig would be called a strong strongback. Boatbuilding lingo isn't that hard really!
Your transom should have been two laminated 3/4" ply. It will work the way it is..but over time, that is a weak point in your design. Chines are the point where the sides of the boat meets the hull. It's a profile term rather than a part. Fun build!
@@matonmacs - I get that.. and I'm even kind of ok with it. But there WILL be a price to pay, down the track. Those mild-steel nails (and staples!) will start constantly weeping rust after a while. No matter how well they try and seal the timber, as plenty of others have learned the hard way.
Looks awesome. I was kind of disappointed when I saw how tiny the outboard is. But given 'design as we go' approach to the boat building, I'd say it's probably better that the motor isn't too powerful.
Thanks! The outboard was literally the only one we could get in time for the build. So we went with it, and if we need to we'll upgrade down the road. 🚤💨
@@MichaelAlm Couldn't you have gone to a store to get an outboard like in the 90's? Remember when things were bought at shops that weren't just a website and a warehouse. Or would it have ruined your schedule?

Next video 😉 thank you!!
That's as quick a 24 minutes as I can remember in ages. Thoroughly enjoyable. I am not completely compelled to watch Jason's video.

How have I not seen this video until now.. you two are my favorite woodworkers on the web!
Nice 🐓 dance @ 3:30. Completely unexpected but awesome! 😎
What a tease! Gotta wait a whole week for the next part? 😉
This is so cool. Love seeing the process. This is such a great colab.
It’ll be worth the wait, I promise!! 👍
Thanks!! 🙌

This is such a fun project!

Awesome build. Loved watching yall all week!
As a boat builder watching this. it quite entertaining. processes we think is common knowledge is clearly not.
love both of you guys! So glad to see the collab!
Enjoying the different views of doing the same thing

There was a lot more of that than I could capture on video 🤣🤣🤣

Beautiful work, guys! It's really turning out fantastic! 😃
Stay safe there with your families! 🖖😊
Heck yes! PNW collaboration. 🏞
Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Can’t watch dudes with arm tattoos
Freakin’ awesome!! This is so cool can’t believe it took me this long to watch.
Wow thats super impressive, man!! Can't wait for the second part!

The famed woodworking style of 'measure nonce cut as much as you can'
Cool. From Russia with love.
Awesome build!!!
Super cool collab! Love Jason's channel too!
Thanks John!! 🙌
Beautiful boat making
That’s going to be a sweet boat!
"Let's have a glass of whiskey and revel in the fact that it's 9 AM.". Been there. Done that.
Ultra nice video! You made it look so easy and fun that I think about building one myself. And I don't even like boats.....
Thank you!! It was definitely a fun build 🚤💨
Fantastic. It's my dream.
This is amazing Michael!! Been listening to Shop Sounds a lot too so it's very cool. Gonna watch Jason's video as a comparison, lol

Didn't know you before your "tag" team with Jason......Let's subscribe!
Don"t worry about using nails/staples. The Gougeon Brothers (the originators of the W.E.S.T. System) do that all the time.
Good to know!

Oh man, look into glue and stitch build technique for the next one. Also cheers!
I’d love to try that!! Cheers 🙌

Awesome!!
Thanks Marylou!
You guys should have gotten the lad working on the Tallyho to help you. He's in the area.
So much fun to see woodworkers working together and experimenting! So often a solo activity this looks like way more fun. Were there any arguments?

love Bourbon moth.
You linked to a boat built 9 months ago. 😃 I found the new one on his TH-cam, but I was confused at first.
Yeah it took him several months to build the boat 🤷🏼♂️ but I guess "a couple months ago" isn't quite accurate
You should have did your pattern plywood thing for the dash. Maybe some other part of the boat.
Wait for the next video 😉

In my experience, genius and insanity are separated by the thinnest, finest of lines.

in case no one mentioned it earlier, the "spine" is called the keel
"We needed it to move forward." Pun intended. Ya know, cause it's the motor.

Awesome build. If you were worried about the brads rusting could you have used stainless fasteners?
Even stainless steel rusts if it's not exposed to oxygen. Monel or silicon bronze would be the way to go.
@@Garryck-1 but can you get those in a collated stack for a nail gun?
