Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora.
Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy.
Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.

Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish)
Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot.
This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people (one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany). The fiery bull head is the symbol of the festival.

Don't expect every Nightwish song to be like this. Each song is different to all the others. I've been listening to 'rock' music since 1956 and thanks to TH-cam I found this band two years ago and consider them the best band I've ever heard.

Welcome to Nightwish and their greatest singer, Floor Jansen. After only ten months in the band she performed this concert in front of 82,000 and blew almost everyone away. There will always be a few loyal fans who can't move on from the previous singers, Tarja Turunen (operatic 1996-2005) and Anette (pop 2007-2012) and that is their loss. Every song was written for one of the earlier singers and she took them to another level. That is why very few suggest early studio or live versions.

When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after this iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on TH-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered TH-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Lots of technical info and some memories of her starting with Nightwish.
Also her Fan Friday videos are hilarious. Just unpack some of these and other presents she left on her channel. Also videos of her solotour she did with songs of her impressive career. Her latest endeavour is her stunning solo album ‘My Paragon. Floor is a high sensitive person, so peace and quiet is as important for her. Living by the woods in Sweden with her husband Hannes Van Dahl (drummer of the band Sabaton), daughters Freja (turned 7 years this march) and Lucy (born last october) ,a couple of horses, dogs and cats, she found this.

I still listen to it quite often and find new emotions end details (among the familiar goosebumps etc.) every time. Its amazing how different parts fit together in such an aesthetic way. Hi Sherry and a very warm welcome to Nightwish! I too had to rediscover myself after a divorce after 25 yrs of marriage. I struggled a lot at that time to get on my own feet but I'm ok now. I became so much stronger than I thought I could ever be. And then I found NW and it gave me, and still gives me, all that I like in music. I hope it will do that for you also. The Nightwish band is not a new stuff in the world of music. They are here about 28 years already... And they are perfect with any leading singer they ever had. Nightwish is always one step ahead of the other metal bands. Their music and performance are huge, massive and majestic. That's because of Tuomas (genial composer and keyboard player), all the masters of musical instruments in the band and the "goddess" leading singer (whether it was Tarja at the beginning or Floor now). The members of Nightwish band aren't only any students of music trying to play something. They are masters, because everything they create, play and sing, is a masterpiece!!! Everyone is experiencing their compositions, not just listening.
Tarja Turunen was the first lead-singer of Nightwish and co-founder of this band. She is a singer with beautiful rich opera soprano-voice. I think, Tarja and Nightwish are the ones who fully defined the symphonic metal music style. And Tarja's opera voice was very helpful to do it, because it was someting different than could all the other bands offer. 🙂
The third NW lead-singer, Floor Jansen, who you have seen in this video, joined the band later, has a bit less operatic voice, but she's more flexible in singing and she's as good singer as Tarja. Nightwish fans love them both and call them goddesses. 🙂
95% of Nightwish compositions are composed by Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards player), who often records parts and sound background of his compositions with London Philharmonic Orchestra and uses them for these songs for studio versions and live versions as well. That's why you can hear there markable tones of symphonic orchestra instruments.
If you want to see more songs with Floor Jansen, I recommend you to look at Nightwish - The Poet and the Pendulum (official live Wembley), The Greatest Show on Earth (official live Tampere), Romanticide (live at Wacken), Elan (official video), Ever Dream (live at Wacken), Dead Boy's Poem (live in Buenos Aires), Storytime (live at Wacken), Elvenjig & Elvenpath (live at Bogota), Shoemaker (official video) or How's the Heart (official video and Planet Rock acoustic session).
I also recommend to have a look at the videos with original lead-singer: Nightwish - Swanheart (live with Tarja Turunen), Sleeping Sun (live with Tarja), Phantom of the Opera (live with Tarja) or Walking in the Air (live with Tarja), Siren (live - End of an Era concert in Helsinki) or I wish I had an Angel (live - End of an Era concert in Helsinki).
The second lead-singer of Nightwish band was Anette Olzon, but she was not very long time a band member. She had clear voice, but not as powerful a rich as Tarja or Floor. But she also has amazing songs: Nightwish - Eva (I think the studio version is better than live), Bye Bye Beautiful (official music video) and Amaranth (official music video).
Marko Hietala is bass-guitar player, but he also is a singer in the band. Most of the time he sings as a second voice/backup singer, but there are songs, where he is a lead singer. I strongly recommend his songs: Nightwish - Kiss While Your Lips Are Still Red (live at Wembley), High Hopes (live at Hartwall Arena Helsinki), Phantom of the Opera (duet with Tarja Turunen), Islander (live at Tampere) and Bye Bye Beautiful (official music video).
And the last note:
Everyone in the band is a master... But there are 3 unusual masters - Tuomas Holopainen is able to play 10 musical instruments at a professional level and compose the magnificent music and texts, Troy Donockley is able to play 12 musical instruments at a professional level, sing and compose music. Floor Jansen is maybe 5 singers in one, beacuse her voice is very flexible - limpid as a crystal, gentle and tender, silent and soft, but it also can be hard and powerful, or also rough, strong and growling. She has a voice like no one... Which band in the entire world can tell that about itself? Nightwish is a gem in the world of music!

I saw them live at Wembley in November 2022 and it was the most amazing experience. To hear more from them, I suggest you follow Gabriel's list or pick and mix from it. I have followed Nightwish for some time now and have just about every Nightwish recording, live and studio and not a single track I don't like.

I can agree that the richness of the compositions on the studio versions is much more present,😉however,live is a different story,Floor is by far the most versatile of the 3 female singers and the live vibe introduce so much more a direct relation with the band. Marco,bassist/singer also,has a epic voice. On the studio albums all 3 female singers stand their ground but,have very different aproaches singing wise.The differences of the 3 singers,makes for heated "discussions",but has a lot to do with preference and not so much of "who's best",in my opinion.
Surely people who like Nightwish,should listen to all their studio albums to hear the whole development of this band.This band has only One steady factor; Tuomas Holopainen, composer and lyricist. Dispite some problematic departures of former band members,this band makes for a very interesting listening experience.🤘
