  • A TOWER GROWS IN BROOKLYN: Architecture CodeX looks at the residential tallest building in the western hemisphere that is not in Manhattan and how skyscrapers are changing the borough of Brooklyn.
ERRATA: At 1:03, I mention the Brooklyn Tower is the tallest building in America outside of Manhattan, but I did not make the distinction of the tallest "residential" (mixed-us actually) building. At 1,066 feet tall, The Brooklyn Tower is officially shorter than Chicago's Sears/Willis Tower at 1,451 feet tall and San Francisco's Sales Force Tower at 1,070 feet tall.

I used to work in beautiful downtown Brooklyn from 1986-2001 when it wasn't so beautiful, and love the new building, and it's a beautiful building nonetheless. Nice to see the area doing well.

How was this experience? I am experimenting with TH-cam ads to expand my base. The numbers are good, but I was wondering if people like you found it helpful or intrusive. Did you watch architecture videos before or did this just seem random? Thanks for responding , but did you actually watch the video?

Good to see you, Michael! Great presentation as usual, thank you.
I think this project was well thought out by respecting the existing structures in the triangle. It would have been a crime to demolish the marvel of architecture and design that the bank is. While living in communist Cuba I witnessed the obliteration of several iconic structures just to replace them with very poorly designed and made cookie cutter buildings, Soviet style building blocks which soon after began to deteriorate and now most are uninhabited.
    Have a great weekend.

We agree. A good looking tower, some airspace around it, and respect for history. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Although from various angles it does often look dark and gothic at a distance, up close the facade has warmer feel with the bronze hue accents. They brought a little bit of the feel of the bank's highly ornate interior to the tower's exterior. Being a more slender design with many setbacks helps it not look too overbearing next to the Junior's Restaurant, at least compared to how they could have maximized their air rights footprint if they wanted to have done so. lol

He says outside of Manhattan - well the Sears tower,......

I checked. You are correct. It seems the claim for the tallest tower outside of Manhattan was based on "residential towers." Some articles did not make that distinction and I did not pick that up. I will add an errata. Thanks!

It is not the tallest building in America outside of Manhattan!

As a Canadian, $800k for a studio isn't a bad price compared to Toronto or Vancouver 🥲. Plus, it's a luxury condo, not a crappy one.
You've already covered McMansion, maybe one day you can do a new episode on the recent "condoland" that is popping up all over North America. Their design is often just a copy paste from each other. Condo developers try to emphasis on the historical and architectural preservation, but it is mostly done poorly (or even none) in reality.

Thanks for watching and commenting. Good idea. I will look around and see what could work. I appreciate that cities are more expensive than the suburbs, but I cannot justify the cost to live at a standard far below what a house will give you. I grew up NEAR New York City and live in the same town today. We pay heavily for being near it, but I at least live with trees and deer and birds and can split logs in the morning and be in Manhattan in the afternoon. Take care.

@@RAREFORMDESIGNS What I try to say is the brokenness of the Canadian real estate market. As this channel is not a real estate channel, so I don't want to go too much off the track. However, just to give you an idea. Canadian average salary is 30% less than American (after currency conversion), but the housing is even more expensive than the USA. Average one bedroom in Toronto for a newly constructed condo (just any random one, not even a top one like the The Brooklyn Tower) is nearly 2M Canadian $. So in contrast, for 900k, living in a luxurious Brooklyn condo is not that "expensive".

@@RAREFORMDESIGNS Same magnitude. I get the point that cities are expensive all over, but it is primarily because you can make MORE money building for the wealthy than for anyone else. Presumably if you flood the upper end, the middle will come down in price, but I am not sure that happens. Thanks for watching and commenting.
