but i just can't see how you think that adds up, that it justifies it at all. The second that match was over, Vince or someone could've held on to the title until after Monday. Bischoff wasn't there, Bret was. Bret held that company on his back after these steroid trials were going on.
WWF wanted the controversy and the attention that comes with. They wanted to up their shock factor game, they wanted to make it look like, more than ever, that ANYTHING could happen in the WWF.

That was only one factor. But one of the main thing, and one Bret doesn’t seem to consider; is that WWF(E) can’t have their champion just forfeit the biggest title in the company to go to the compete for Rival company.
Bret didn’t need the actual belt to tout that in promos for WCW, which Bischoff would have certainly had Bret do.
And it’s on Wrestling with Shadows that is what Bret wanted to do. Simply forfeit the WWF(E) on his way to compete for their biggest rival.
Did the screw job need to happen. No but what did need to happen is Bret had to drop the title to someone, somewhere in his way out. It’s the fault of both sides for not coming up with something.
Bret once said, he’d drop it to Austin. They wanted Austin to chase and win it at mainia. But Bret’s biggest fault, and you see this countless times through out his career, he couldn’t see big picture but only Brets picture. IE Undertaker once having to tell him “not everything is about you”

The fact was that when Bret went to Shawn before Survivor Series and told him that even though they hated each other he wanted Shawn to know he was happy to put him over and that Shawn was safe in the ring with him...Shawn's response was "thanks but I can't say the same"...and THAT was the reason Bret refused to put him over. Steve Austin & Jericho both said they would have done exactly the same thing if they were in Brets position and I bet most other champions (including Shawn) would have refused to if their opponent had said the same before a match.
Don't buy into the WWF revised history version that Bret refused because he was a mark

@@acidmack1041 it doesn't matter if Bret felt disrespected from what Shawn said. It was not brets company and not a REAL title....just a prop in a story. Has been for 50 years.....so the fact he wouldn't do the job is ridiculous and to think he was in anyway right says alot about your character and ability do your job when asked.
