The combination of vina and voice, Ney and Dagar, performing Raga Puriya together with such subtle mastery is nothing less than devastating in its beauty - truly sublime. I feel blessed to be living in a time when we can still hear musicians of this calibre perform a music that requires a lifetime of devotion. So wish I could have been in the audience!
It is interesting that Nirmalya does not sing with the dhrupad taan; traditionally, it is as if he cuts the string on himself; his voice even closes down on nishad in alap. Is this a conscious choice, to invite khyal?? Curious. One would think that with Ustad and Pt. Sharma that he would attempt a strict nada yoga recital. So why lapse the taan? Ustad seems to be reminding him on Komal Ga of the earth aspect - Not vir, which Nirmalya seems to want to display almost thematically, but true shanti (sans aversion) should be present - thus the karuna display without alacrity in alap. Of more benefit to the rasika, to 'start from the beginning' this way, and allow vir to manifest spontaneously in jor or jhala as it becomes more difficult to hold the dhrupad taan, meeting mara.... Thoughts?
Not familiar with a lot of the terms you use, but to my ears he is evoking a different bani. More kandar or nohar then dagar- bahauddin, too. I wouldn't say khyal, but seeing as the other banis are more ornamented that would make sense.
Have no idea what you're talking about, but have to remember that he is singing much higher than normal due to the tuning of the vina. Basically female key. Hence it doesn't feel as chilled as usual.
Divine Performance ❤
