    After buying our 18 yr old sailboat about 5 months ago, we had our local Volvo Penta dealer do a full service of the engine. They took the fuel injectors out (they were totally black) and gave to Bosch and they did the service on them (came back looking brand new). They took out the heat exchanger and cleaned it. Was a messy job and it felt like the engine was in pieces to get it out. It was surprising how much junk blocked the system. They changed the thermometer and that is not easy to get to on the MD 2020 even with their special tools, requires putting a new gasket too. The service took 2 mornings of work and I sat with them the whole time asking lots of questions. I’m sure the loved that, but were very patient. It has been interesting to watch you do many of the things they did in your videos.

    Thanks Tino I have the same engine and followed your instruction on oil and diesel filter change. This is my next job and thanks for giving me the confidence to do my self.

    Good instruction video... Now I feel more confident to check the valves on my engine (Volvo MD17C, 3 cylinders). Thanks a lot for this video

      Glad you can use it, the reason for the video was also that there is not much information out there on how to adjust the valves on a 3 cylinder engine.

    Could you please elaborate bit more on how to put the crankshaft in the right position ?
    For cylinder 1 just align marks on the pulley but how to do it for cylinder nr 3? It’s not easy for me to feel where is the exact point where you fill is tight or loose
    Tak!

    Don't suppose you recorded the initial valve clearances, i.e how far out were they?

    I am doing this on my D1-20 since there is evidence of blow-by from the oil cap and oil check + a knock in the furthest cylinder is very clear. My question is: the workshop manual says to "Crank the engine clockwise until the valves for no.
    1 cylinder overlap". What is actually meant by that please?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If your engine knocks your injection nozzels need some service. Blow-by is caused by the compression from the cylinders there is getting pressed down in the crankcase and then making the blow-by. It is pretty normal there is a little amount of blow-by in every engine. Think the "1. cylinder overlap" is when the rocker arms is free and not touching the valves.

  • @andrewjenkins7783

    Is there a tightening sequence to the rocker cover?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A normal tightening sequence is from the middle and out, so handtight the middle one first and then the two others. According to the manual the bolts must be tightened to 10-12 Nm. (7.4-8.6 ft.lbf)

    What is the tightening torque for the cylinder head cover?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On a MD2020 the tightening torque is 10-12 Nm. for the valve cover.

    Is the sound different than before the repair?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It seems like it is shaking less when I compare the videos from before, something I also considered cutting into the video. But don't think the sound is much changed, the shrinking sound from the generator is still there.

    Did you forget thighten last screw? On the cilinder?

    • @twiper
      @twiper  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      After the filming I re checked everyting and the last screw in the video was not tightened quite enough in the clip. As I mentioned the screws must be good hand tight.

    Your procedure looks wrong - you have to measure and adjust them individually, some of your rockerarms were under pressure when you measured the clearance

    • @twiper
      @twiper  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is the frist time I try to adjust valves on a 3 cylinder engine so maybe not perfect but done by the procedure of the manual.

      Another great video, keep up the great work; We don't get this level of detail anywhere else!
      Interesting that you had a brittle part to the gasket right where you suspect the blow-back from No2 intake. I would always change the gasket too, it's false economy not to, you just end up changing it later anyway

      @@andrewjenkins7783 Thanks :) And yes to prevent a leak change the gaskets. The valve adjustment makes the engine run more smoothly. Another very important thing is to get the diesel nozzles adjusted, something the majority don't do. The nozzles must be ajusted for every 5 years.
