Thanks for keeping this simple. I have had various drones for several years and flew them when I first bought them. Then more and more regulations and the RID requirement. I just left them all on the shelf and thought I'd never fly any of them again. I saw a video on YT about this Roku device and bought it and gave it to my adult son to hopefully get him to fly the DJI FPV drone I gave him for Christmas a couple years ago. He never tried it so I decided to look for more info. I renewed my FAA registration and got my TRUST certificate. Setting up the Roku was not clear to me until I watched your video. Now it is working and I have all my batteries charged up and will be flying around my safe areas soon. Hopefully my son will also get the bug. Thanks! I agree with most flyers that this is not necessary, but until common sense comes back I guess this will have to work. I know I can't afford any fines or much of anything else these days!
Thanks for the review! I'm actually a part 107 looking to make a category 1 UAS that's legal to operate directly over people. The new DJI NEO ticks most of the boxes being sub 250gr, AND having shrouded props, but lacks the Remote ID that's a requirement for flying over "open-air assemblies." I think this little unit will tick that last box. Great video!
Thanks Pal, I really appreciate all your videos and I have been watching you for YEARS. This thing is cheap and you walked us through how to do it.. I got mine on order.. Hey, just for info, what did you do in real life, are you retired? I think you must have been in a tech field or a teacher.. anyway thanks.. you have as always been very informative and helpful.
Retired aerospace engineer. In my old age, I've gone back to my roots. Playing with flying toy aircraft. They're actually more fun to play with than the real stuff ;-)
@@Quadcopter101 I knew it.. me too! I retired 4 years ago as an electronics engineer at a large aerospace company with 42 years experience.. LOL you can have all that.. now i just want to have fun.. Great videos and they are all fun.. See ya, Pal, Mike
BTW, I had a friend that worked at my company that had patents on RC control circuits he had invented back in the late 50's.. He was recruited for a project that did some of the first pilot less drones back in the 80's.. He helped with their drone but quit that program then retired after he showed them how to do it because of all the red tape and politics..
Worried to learn this uses bluetooth. Way back when I had a bluetooth device on my quad and it interfered with the radio signal. Greatly reduced the range in which I could fly.
I got one of these for $34 on Amazon almost a month ago since there was no excuse of them being to expensive, it works great! Don't use the velcro for freestyle! Mine came off in a crash while doing some tree diving... The app sent me right to it luckily, i also spray painted mine with neon paint after that cuz i just got lucky it was getting late in the evening so i saw the flashing light, now im looking for 3d printed mount/protector, would be nice if someone made it right on top a gopro and rc50/session mount....
Quick question: You say to put the FAA-issued Registration Number in for both boxes 'Registration Number' and 'Operator ID' - that does make sense, but where did you find this info? I see no mention of that on the FAA site, but others have said that it is either a) for European use; or B) issued by the 'FAA (LBA)' - do you have another source for putting it into 'Operator ID'? Also, you put in '251' for weight; don't you have to be Part 107 for anything over 250g? Good video, thanks!
As a recreational pilot in the USA, all that's really needed is the device serial number. Once you register the module, its serial number serves similar to a license plate. The other information entered may be applicable to other countries that require that info. However, the Ruko app wants something entered in those blocks. If in the USA as a recreational pilot, you really can enter anything you want there just so the app will allow you to continue. Part 107 is just for commercial drone pilots. You DO NOT need a Part 107 to fly your heavier than 250 gram drone. But you do need to register that drone with the FAA, and you'll also need to include a RID module when you fly that drone.
It would be cool if they can make a plug to feed the gps into the drone (if thats even possible) so it can feed it for gps rescue ect. I know its bull that its a requirement but dual purpose wouldnt be bad
Hey QC, can you please do a video on how this works on your drone? Specifically how to find your drone using the app.. that's what really sold me on this ID.. Thanks Pal.
Not really needed as it's simple. The app has a Google maps page. Just open it, and it shows your location and your drone's location on the map. And this device doesn't need to be limited to drones. For example, if your dog has a tendency to wander away, you could attach it to your dogs collar to find him/her.
Enjoy your videos, and thanks for reviewing this gadget. I don't live in the US, so not concerned about the registration process, but would love to use this device just for the insurance of being able to find my model after an unexpected arrival other than back with me. So the question is ... can you use the device and its app for just that function without registration? Perhaps you can advise?
Yes, that is one of its main selling points. The battery lasts for up to 5 hours, and will be continuously transmitting its position during that time. Additionally, the app provides a mapped lined track of the entire flight leading up to its crashed position.
@@Quadcopter101 Wow, thank you for the info, and this thing is perfect. I have lost a couple of small quadcopters in the huge cornfield that this thing would have saved.
Get a $ 20 key finder - you get four tags and two finder transmitters, no app, no subscription, - only 250 ft range but that's good enough for me. If you want more complicated there's " tile" and others.

Cool video but I have to loudly resist any efforts by the FCC to control and ultimately ground my drone devices.

Is there a way that I can prevent it from broadcasting my personal/operator location?

Great system, I think only some people will need to do this, urban areas, , etc. otherwise how do they check something they don't know about ?

Does it need to be outside of your aircraft to function or will it work inside as long as it's facing up?
It should work inside if it's facing up, and there's no electrical or metal components in the way above it.
