I installed CTGP on my Wii U with MJD's tutorial, and the YT app on Wii U is still supported, so does my Wii U count as an MJD Certified Device?
Again, I used to watch TH-cam videos on my Nintendo Wii Family Edition back in 2013 and beyond. I wish I could experience it all over again without any homebrew mods.
i was using YT on the wii since i ever got mine.. last thing i remember watching was some Pokemon GO memes on it.. too sad it dont work now but this is great!

2013? That was a bit late in the Wii's lifespan. It came out in 2006 after all. 2013 was actually around the time it started being discontinued.

The Switch supports TH-cam, not Netflix.

It's funny, because for 2 years after the Switch came out you could still watch Netflix on the Wii. They only discontinued it in 2019.

At one point my Mom took away my PC for a whole summer so I used my Wii to watch TH-cam and browse the web for those couple months. Memories

OH man! This is bringing me back. I remember using WiiMC as my media center to play TV shows of a flash drive. It even played DVD's which was neat!
About DVDs, can I use a USB Blu Ray drive for that? (Of course the Wii wont play Blu Rays, but Blu Ray drives read DVD) and on the Wii U's vWii?
@@LennyQUMFIF No it just uses the Wii cd drive to play DVDs. That's as far as I know about it :)

I actually remember using this a few years ago when I played around with WiiMC. Pretty much exactly what it does, can't skip through videos and it is all video names. For me it sometimes would crash, but I mean usually nothing too uncommon for homebrew apps. Either way its still a cool thing that people have developed, and its always fun to see the creations people come out with on the old console.
Oh boy, I do remember that, even I did watched TH-cam on the Wii Console back in late 2000’s/2010’s days.
Had absolutely no reason to do this, I have a chromecast with google tv hooked up to the same TV as my Wii, but I still did it, and it works great. Watching Markipliers og FnAF series in 480p never felt better.

Also just a note for WiiMC-SS users, in the likely case you are using it
Download the XML file, but put it in the /apps/wiimc folder, NOT the /apps/wiimc-ss folder
I downloaded SS from homebrew browser and i assume it automatically created the wiimc folder, if it's not there, create it i guess
I downloaded SS and it came with riitube preinstalled

@@pessoaanonima6345 yeah, they updated that a while before this video came out, but after it was recorded.
Easiest way I’ve found to do it is to just install both versions of WiiMC, and just use SS. I didn’t see it preinstalled when I got SS first, so I think it just takes it from the original WiiMC folder.
I used to frequently watch YT vids on the Wii via the browser in the downloaded "Internet Channel." I never found out until way too late that there even was a dedicated YT app on the Wii, but I still use the app on the Wii U even today.
The dedicated TH-cam app didn't exist until like 2012, after the discontinued TH-cam XL, which was the service used to play TH-cam on the Internet Channel.
The Wii U is the closest to watching Videos on a Wii Lmao. I also use it to this day, especially because i can use my Headphones. And unlike the wii, you can log-in and see the thumbnails, channels and even like vids!
@@LennyQUMFIF I mostly use it for watching some live streams and movies on YT's free movie channel since I have it hooked to a TV. If the options to modify viewing speed to 2x actually worked, I'd use it even more often.

I still use a Xbox 360 for TH-cam sometimes, it can output up to 1080p in TH-cam so it works pretty well with a TV, and it's DVD drive combined with being able to output 1080p makes it a nice media player.
I use my PS3 as a media player, it's so nice because it can play a lot of files off a USB drive as well.
my TH-cam doesnt work on 360 for some reason :( netflix works tho

Absolutely used the TH-cam Channel a lot in my college days. My only computer was a laptop, so it was nice to put TH-cam videos on my TV, which was a chonky 24" CRT
I recently discovered that Homestar Runner cartoons can still be viewed on the Nintendo Wii directly off their website. So if anybody does want something to watch on their Wii and doesn't have the knowhow or desire to do this modification to their Wii if you have the internet channel that's one thing you can do. This is thanks to its Flash Player support being integrated. Having TH-cam on the Wii was great and would still be great because I liked to watch videos on my CRT TV back when the official channel was still running. Would be great to be able to run TH-cam into a CRT again.
Does youareanid*ot or Super Mario 63 (not 64, 63) work on the browser? Since those are also flash

The Dreamcast probably wouldn't ever be able to play TH-cam, but there was a Netflix disc on PS2 so if someone really cared they probably could make a TH-cam homebrew viewer.
This is really useful for people who have CRT TVs and want to watch TH-cam on them so it’s not completely useless
There are other ways as well but as I found out in my latest video most solutions will run into some sort of hiccups at some point or another.
More like people who want to still use CRTs at certain moments as a retro thing? I mean, who has a CRT as their main set apart from the odd very old person in a forsaken place?

I hate the fact that we're living in a time where even stuff as "modern" as the Wii, is now considered "old" "outdated" and not supported any more. I REMEMBER WHEN THE WII WAS NEW! What the hell happened? Where did all that time go?

Watching TH-cam on outdated hardware is definitely my mood.
Now, if only I could get TH-cam working in some semi-authentic manner on my Windows 98 box, that would be grand.
Maybe a service that can grab a TH-cam video via TH-camDL and spits out an AVI file, a Quicktime movie or a Realplayer video?
...thinking about it, it shouldn't be TOO difficult, biggest problems are storage and processing power if done at scale... I am sure that there is some Linux utility that can convert TH-cam's MP4 files into those old formats, even if it may take a few steps.
My big question for you is how powerful is your Windows 98 box? AFAIK any Pentium III should be good enough to play a 240p MP4 stream with VLC. Newer versions of VLC can load TH-cam links directly, but unfortunately I think these are too new to run on 98.
For a more authentic, yet unbearably slow experience on 98SE I have another solution. If you use KernelEx then you should be able to install modern-ish browsers like MyPal which should be capable of using the normal YT web interface. If you install XP it would of course be much easier.
If my other comment with examples of TH-cam working on old devices linked gets deleted, then reply to my comment and I'll explain how it works once again.
@@eDoc2020 It's an HP T5710 thin client, with a VIA somethingorother CPU running at 800MHz, upgraded to a whole Gigabyte of RAM.
And yes, I could probably go the easy way and brute force TH-cam itself to give me the video, but I want the result to be "era-accurate", which to me means a local file (because the connection would've been too slow to stream it), and also a blocky low-res mess from the primitive compression algorithms being used back in the day.
@@BrightSpark In terms of era accuracy, by the time TH-cam launched about half of all Internet users had "high speed" access. You would've needed to be crazy to try using dial-up.
Practicality isnt half as fun as creativity, awesome stuff! This reminds me of a personal project I took on last year trying to make an iPad 1 run TH-cam. Sure, not practical at all, but it worked 😎👍
I find it actually not bad.
It has no ads, no age restriction and no force to create an account.
The Navigation and functionaly has some bummers but it's still overall not bad.
I'm used with 480p / 576p and it doesn't look to bad with a LCD-TV.

Everyone here is talking about the Wii TH-cam app, but I was watching TH-cam on the Wii back when you used TH-cam XL on the Internet Channel. No one these days even remembers TH-cam XL, but man I remember watching a ton of TH-cam on the Internet Channel back in the day and loving it.
Holy shit I remember TH-cam XL. I used to prefer the regular TH-cam over it, but it's still nostalgic nonetheless.
The video playlist in the WiiMC channel reminds me of my song playlist I used to listen to in my car when I was a kid.

BTW, for those who have a newer Wii which won’t read DVD’s, you can connect an external USB DVD or Blu-ray Drive and play your movies using WiiMC. No Blu-ray support but those also read DVD which is why I mentioned it.

The solution to the problem with seeking is you just need to download the MP4 of the youtube video itself, Then it seeks anywhere perfectly
Also about the resolution , Watch 360p/480p MP4s on a CRT TV they were made for those resolutions they are very chrisp on those diaplays opossed to washed out and blurry on LCDs & OLEDs.

I wish there was a way for youtube to work on the original Xbox. You used to be able to, but not anymore. Seeing it work on the Wii kinda reminded me of how you could mod the Xbox to do things in a similar way and it makes me sad that those things are no longer supported.
You probably could if someone were willing to develop it, using a similar way to this. Same goes for PS2, considering there was a fucking Netflix disc for that thing.
i actually used to used my wii as my main way to watch youtube back when my parents wouldnt let me on the computer or let me have a phone lol. It worked well enough for me.
This is really good, I have a TV which only has a Wii, a DVD player and some analogic channels. I've been wanting that for a long time, so I can watch youtube on it (I could also buy a chromecast, but it doesn't have HDMI so I would have to use a VGA adapter).
Make sure to use component video cables to get the best image quality

I love these types of videos on old consoles like the DS and Wii, it's curious that it's still possible to use Netflix on the Wii with some homebrew.
Until a while ago it was possible to use TH-cam on DS, but unfortunately they changed the API.
You will never be able to watch Netflix on the Wii ever again, the reason TH-cam works in this way is because you don't need an account to access it and can just view everything for free.

It's still 480p but it looks better because it's converted from the component signal, rather than the blurry composite.
Its still 480p, but its a digital signal instead of Analog (assuming that you get the Hyperkin hdmi)

Seeking in a web video is a good bit more complicated than just starting from the beginning and watching it through. It's probably just treating the video as more of a live streaming video, since as you said, it's probably just a proof of concept more than anything.
As someone who is watching this on a Nintendo Switch, this is cool.
Before the TH-cam channel on Wii existed I used to watch videos through the web browser directly on the site, and would just zoom into the video player. While it worked, it took ages for the video to load, and when you would go forward in the video it would buffer a while more, sometimes forever.

It in fact IS practical.
I personally have an old TV, it has no TH-cam, Netflix or any of that.
So if I want to watch TH-cam on the TV I'd have to connect my computer and that's annoying.
And with your tutorial I now can watch TH-cam although not the best video quality but I can watch it :D

What's crazy is that a friend of mine used the Wii TH-cam App up until they could connect their PC straight to the TV. I had gifted them a 30 inch older Panasonic TV, and even still they used Wii YT.
I can’t believe it was this simple. I swear the youtube function on wiiMC didn’t work in the past. I remember trying over and over. My mind is blown that I’m watching youtube on my wii in 2023.

Apart from why on earth would you want to watch YT at 480p, I guess you waste quite more time having to search videos by their exact name than skipping ads...
