- Defines imprinting as the formation of a social attachment to an object and documents the phenomenon by observing experiments with newly hatched ducks. Presents the ducklings with a variety of moving objects in order to determine the influence of color and sound on the imprinting process. Illustrates the critical period in which imprinting must occur in order to be effective and tests the longevity of the impressions. Comments on the role Konrad Lorenz played in the scientific study of this process.
