    Colin’s spirit cannot be crushed. Not many people are willing to put as much hard, itchy, cramped work into a boat as he is. His channel is well worth watching

    So that’s why all these sailing channels are in Panama this time of year. It’s a insurance thing. Thanks for explaining.

    Colin also has a video of him replacing that same propeller shaft seal on a super yacht in water. Pretty handy to have a new seal already on the shaft.

    I prefer the old school stuffing box. Drips do not hurt and no such thing as an emergency hall out. KISS!

    I've seen several of the PSS dripless shaft seals, haven't seen one from Tides Marine yet. I like the idea of the having the spare seal already on the shaft, replacing in water if necessary. That's a pretty convincing endorsement, I'd love to try one.

    Clever to have a spare gasket on the shaft ready to go. What's the hose going to the seal? To flush salt water out for storage? Anyway nice to see you sailing again.

    If you had a standard stuffing box with PTFE gore stuffing, you won't have a problem with dripping water since it is self lubricatingl.

    Just curious, with the ability to beach your boat, why not beach it and then change the seal?

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The shaft is about 2' underwater so we'd need more than 3' or so of tidal range to dry out and get the shaft up out of the water. I did this once on a beach in the UK (with 10' tide range that day) to change the propeller. All went well until I realized I was missing a needed wrench... very fast run to the hardware store in town to get it done before the tide came back in :-)

    Wonder of that bulkhead failure was due to the hurricane or issues with Lagoon bulkheads I've seen talked about..?

  • @bullhippo9023
    @bullhippo9023 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you sure you proper seated that shaft seal? Will the seal cap seat the seal as you tighten it down? Just currious.

  • @DCGULL01

    So, I've been doing some mental math, and think that I'm smart in looking for a shaft driven propeller system when choosing a blue water boat. I was surprised at how little water you took on while replacing your 'stuffing box' seal- I expected much more? I must be somewhat correct in guessing that a sealed driveshaft has much less of chance of sinking a boat that a sail drive unit- not to mention the 1/2shafts and bevelled gearing to change thrust direction.
    I am very curious about the designed hull in process in Holland? Is that project a go for Distant Shores, or- is it still in the design phase? I'm exceptionally curious about aluminum built boats over say 50 feet? I hope that the project is till going to happen! Any news would be great. Thanks in advance.

    Would drip less system work for older sailboat in like 1973

    • @DistantShoresTV
      @DistantShoresTV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any boat with a shaft drive should work. It replaces the more traditional stuffing box. Let us know if you try it! Also as Stuart W says down below you can also try the modern packing in the old box...

      Volvo shaft seal is probably the cheapest & very good for an older boat

    • @svechappe6075
      @svechappe6075 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@billhanna8838 Agree, for an older boat, the Volvo seal is probably the best choice. Inexpensive, but simple and works well. Have to haul out and pull the shaft to replace it, but a recreational boat may only have to do that once in 15 years.
