So instead of teaching parents that they can just block or limit these apps on their kids phones, the government wants to have identity verification for ALL Australians. Sounds like mass surveillance to me.

As an Australian, I feel it’s up to parents not the government. I also don’t like the idea of having to use some sort of Digital ID to access social media platforms. They won’t be able to police it without this otherwise !

As an Australian, the 1st I heard of this was a couple of weeks back as did most of the Australians I know. Not sure where they get the statement, 61% of Australians support it. The question was probably more along the lines of should there be better control on what media children have access to and to this question I would say yes.... From what I am seeing now, the government is rushing to get this through and that is very risky. In my view this blanket ban is ill advised and will cause more issues than it solves. Australian has some of the worst bullying that is considered entertainment on its radio (Kiss FM,) and terrestrial TV, reality shows, I would think is where they should start not a blanket ban on social media as its is a terrible example to kids today...

The political class here in Australia are not what I would describe as being deep thinkers.

It is hard for schools to set rules about cell phones and social media usage when parents are not supportive.

When I was a kid, you used to try to get your parents to like you. Today parents bend over backwards to get their kids to like them.

I am a young Australian high school English teacher. All of my colleagues and I are very much in support of this decision. As the people primarily responsible for teaching media literacy, we see first hand how damaging social media exposure has been.
I'm sorry but the young Aussie journalist on this segment isn't exactly best placed to comment on the issue. Educators and parents are very much in favour of it.

@@kob2040 I did, and I was exposed to a great deal of harmful content that I could not consent to or entirely understand the implications of.
Most social medias already have a minimum age of 13. Putting it up to 16 is only a few years difference, but its limiting access at a really crucial point of development when a teenager is very impressionable and psychologically developing rapidly.
The rights-based argument is a silly one - a right to what? To be advertised at? To watch TikToks? Actual digital rights, like the right to communication and freedom of information, will remain open to young people.

Has Australia not heard that banning anything, stops nothing. It's like giving a kid a car and telling them not to go over 10kph, no passengers, and no music allowed. If bullying is the problem, legally make both online and off bullying a crime.

At some point parents really need to stop sticking their head in the sand and actually monitor what their kids are doing online.
The amount of kids I see using TH-cam to post inappropriate clips of themselves because they’re not allowed on TikTok is unreal.
I’m talking crop tops, booty shorts, doing adult dance moves. Some videos even have the parents in the background in their pjs obviously just thinking their kid is messing around with 0 idea it’s being posted online for everyone to see.
I’ve contacted numerous parents and they’re shocked (but grateful) every time.
Unfortunately the internet is a dangerous place and it’s up to parents to monitor what’s going on.

One of the long term success that shall be observed in today and the following evenings.
The great initiative began by 2nd August and eventually puts it’s greater remarks on many other aspects and dimensions as of to save the planet from “Radioactive pollution is caused by the unmitigated release of radioactive elements and waste into the land, water, air, or nearby living organisms”.
Australia just join the wave. 🫶
Many congratulations to those, for this great initiative and a process to save inhabitants, specially “under age” people. 💯
It is an inevitability to believe that
{Saving one child is like saving the entire humanity}.
