    After a while all my liquid fertilizer was doing was growing blackbeard algea. Not to big of a deal because it was cleaning up the excess nutrients. It just showed me that the tank had enough nutrients in the substrate. It is fine gravel eco complete that I put over fluval stratum. The mulm has built up enough to create a layer in the fine gravel that has basically capped itself again. Mulm is your best friend when it comes to fertilizing your plants. My plants have been flourishing because I do not vacuum out any of the fish poop or leaves that may occasionally fall off the plants. If you look at the bottom of your tank, if you can, you will see the roots branching out across the bottom. This is exactly what you want to see. I would also say that a small snail species is very necessary for your planted tank. Whether it be Bladder, Malaysian Trumpet, or even Ramshorn snails. They will help break down the waste even further which in turn help the plants absorb them even further. Yes they may be a little unsightly to some, but they will be nothing but beneficial to your plants and tank health. I have two small types Bladder and Malaysian Trumpet snails. The Bladder keeps the whole tank nice and tidy, whilst the Malaysian Trumpet snails stay in the substrate to help thing breaking down and moving in there. Let your tank take care of itself and only make adjustments as needed. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Thanks again Alex for another good topic of discussion.

      Very excellent point. I use malaysian trumpets in most my tanks, no matter the style of substrate really.

    All my aquariums are dirt with sand caps, live plants. When first set up I do use root tabs and liquid ferts just to jump start things. Wait till I see a bit of growth and other life forms such as snails, seed shrimp/other tiny creatures thriving. Then I cease the ferts and know I can add a few fish. I do water test for all parameters during the start up process. Slow and steady as she goes.

    What's up Alex! I have a dirted tank set in October last year. Late November I noticed a deficiency on potasium so I got that fertilizer specific. Adding this resulted in way better plants, I increased the light time and the algee started groing way less. It was kind of crazy more nutrients and more light resulted in less algee.

    Really good stuff, great illustrative tanks. Realistic, achievable - not super pristine high maintenance display tanks. EI is a bit much for most of us so glad you skimmed over it.
    My one tiny caveat would be that CO2 is often deficient in tanks - especially if using certain types of filtration - and perhaps more importantly if your tank contains water that is hard. In lower light tanks, even low levels of yeast and sugar generated CO2 diffusion will keep plants healthier and they are more likely to out compete algae and suck up undesirable Ammonia, and high Nitrate and Phosphate levels in your water and make maintenance easier.
    High light, soft water tanks with CO2 injection require a lot of trimming, that is for sure.
    Keep up the good work.

    I've recently read for high ph tanks, dosing micro nutrients in the water column is basically useless as the elements settle out and become unavailable to the plants within hours. Just thought I'd share that info. If I'm mistaken, please feel free to correct me.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That is correct. Over 7.6 or tds of 250ppm it's not necessary because the minerality of the water hardness also holds a lot of those trace minerals. (Micro nutrients). But once the water is too hard.... most plants won't grow, so its a little tricky. Also ammonia is far more toxic in tanks over 7.0 ph... so the same amount of ammonia that is just below toxic at 6.5 or 7.0 is deadly at like 8.0. Essentially every point of ph it gets 10x more deadly

      Hornwort, Vallis and Amazon swords should thrive, the latter if Iron is provided in the substrate, but all need adequate light. It takes a lot of light energy for plants to extract CO2 from the carbonates, in hard water I would recommend maybe 1 watt of LED per gallon for 8 hours a day.@@CodeNo.5H4H5

    I have a question. How can I stop making jungle style plant packed scapes?
    In the case of dirted aquariums even with no water changes I don't have a problem with keeping the water clean. BUT I find it hard to create negative space in my aquascape. I want to see bare sand sometimes. It's more inviting to the eye, maybe a valley in the middle and a beach on the front.
    I can only think of understocking and putting a bunch of algae and detritus eaters in to maintain the balance in the absence of plants. I don't mean no plants but almost half the plants I normally have.
    I think this is a nice conversation to have about low-tech aquariums. From my observations the real advantage of high tech tanks is that you can have more negative space in your tank. Not the water parameters or the water clarity or fish health. How can we emulate that in low tech?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      You nailed it 100%. That and controlling flowering and emersed plants... that's the big advantage to high tech style tanks. For folks like you ( and most my tanks)... you simply gotta trim trim trim. And then use a small gravel vaccuum or turkey baster to manually clean the negative spots

    Hello Alex sir
    The rummynose tetra tank is absolutely beautiful 😍
    Few questions
    1 I made 3 ponds on my terrace using potting soil/garden soil
    I have noticed in winter the plants grow very slowly even if I make the substrate very nutritious adding vermicompost, egg shells and other diy stuff but when the summer hits all the plants get nuts 😂
    I can't control the growth because of the direct sunlight hitting on the plants leaf 😌
    I tried with only potting soil no additives but still plants prefer light over humanly additive nutrients !
    That's what I faced from last year to this
    And now plants doing okayish but they are sending runners stems and waiting for Feb to explode 😂

    I've been using Aquarium co-op liquid fertilizer, and seachem root tabs. I figure they are good brands, they aren't expensive, and they are easy to use. All my plants were doing really great, but after a year some of the stem plants aren't growing as well as they used to. I wonder if I should pull them out and replace them with some type of sword plant. The bacopa is still very strong, but the rotala takes for ever to grow back after being trimmed.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So rotalla needs high light. Don you have a coop light? I prefer the fluval 3.0 for growing colorful dense plants.... also rotala benefits from co2 massively. Low or medium light rotalas and many other stem plants, kinda just get scraggly and slowly pick up algae

      @@Fishtory I have a budget light. I think it's hygger, but one of the less expensive ones. I was having terrible algae problems, but I turned off the blue lights and the algae finally went away... well, I also stopped leaving them on too long, too. lol

    • @williammcdowell6257
      @williammcdowell6257 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hygger is judged to have a high PAR but honestly, I find a standard outdoor floodlight better, say a 30 or 50 watt LED. Dirt cheap, great penetration and so long as around 4,000K absolutely spot on in spectrum. Blue light is needed but not in excess, replant your trimmings and throw away the stalks and roots every so often for stem plants, treat them like culinary herbs and consider CO2, even a low tech sugar and yeast system will make life so much easier, tanks are often devoid of accessible CO2 within hours of the lights having been turned on. Hope that helps.@@MandyJane123700

    With the limiting factor, if you are missing ONE element nor not having enough in your all in one f=liquid fertilizer, does that mean you will have a algea problem? Or does the algea also work under the limiting factor so you will be ok utilizing a all in one fliquid fert according to the manufacturer? It is very hard to figure what work and what won't in our tank.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Algae has a limiting factor as well, but it's almost always below that of the plants...so a plant may need 20ppm of nitrates a day... algae may need .5 or 1ppm of it. Great question. I have some other videos on how we take out algae either wirh cutting the lights since they cant store energy more than a day, and plants can for weeks... OR by raising light and the speed those limiting factors are consumed

    I was hoping to use plants that dont need to be planted to help clean the water but now you are saying i need to place liquid fert and still need to do water changes. So how many fish would i need to balance things out or at least be close to the proper balance for a 29gal tank. I had this tank for many years and just did monthly water changes. I have even stopped that beacuse i only have 4 fish. One fish keeps killing new ones i put in. Hoping to start adding fish again. I know this is a complex question but can anyone give any advice to adding none buried plants. I have gravel now and one sad looking amazon sword.

      @Fishtory  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Um id say 15 to 20 inch or 1.5 inch long fish like tetras or danios, rasboras etc would work. Or the 20$ liquid fertilizer and a test kit for nitrates.

      Ok. Thank you for the advice. I am planning on also getting 10 cherry red shrimp. Still trying to figure out what plants to get also. Have it narrowed down to Java fern, Giant Java moss, Anubias (smaller and larger size) 3 each of those, Water sprite. Banana plant. Still not sure on getting a top floater one. I have API liq. fert already. Still need to get a test kit. I hope that should be ok plant wise. Thanks again.

    Can too much nutrients in deep substrate kill plants? Somehow my swords looks like dying. There is sufficient light . And corymbosa stem is rotting.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes thats called "running too hot". Without extremely high light or gas exchange in the substrate it can cause strong fertilizers or very acidic things like peatmoss to harm the roots...while in the right ratio they help the plants

  • @fownine4life853

    Stupid Quick question? What is the difference in the end, with 2 identical tanks with the exact same elements like fish, feeding , light, ect... but 1 has anoxic filtration with a plenum and the other has a hang on back filter but has a load of plants like Pothos and peace Lillys ect...with there roots submerge in the water column taking the toxins out for the fish?

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So pothos wants ammonia, its roots will reach down to the substrate if you watch closely... it isnt very good at eating nitrates like most aquatic plants can. But if you have aquatic plants instead... vs the plenum .... then its all the same essentially

    You are not really wrong, but this video is too short to cover evereything. Just one example, ammonium is basically non-poisounus in a pH under seven. Lowering the pH to under seven will make a huge difference in plant growth. Not only because of the ammonium, but iron and manganese will also be a lot more available for the plants at a lower pH. BUT. Making a huge water change with tap water (so the pH goes over seven), might kill all your fish. Another thing to notice is that much underwater plant growth in nature, is close to a spring. The oxygen levels will be low, which means nutrients are available. Managing anaerobic/aerobic spaces in a tank might change everything. But then - everything also changes when the plants grow really well.
    Then we have all the different plants and what they actually prefer. Floating plants is in another league than rooted plants - they got access to carbon from the air. Inbetween plants are for example water lilies, which behave completely different as soon as the have leaves on the surface. One might see that with tons of other species too, if one lets them grow over the surface.
    You already know about the Walstad method, but worth mentioning is Tom Barr´s "Estimative Index". Both methods are for the plant nerds. I have even seen tanks (at Tropica) where they starved the plants of phosphorous. They got the plants to grow very low and very compact. But phosphorous is a nutrient that many plants like to get from their roots. You can put it in the water column, but then say hello to an algae bloom.
    To keep it simple for a normal fishtank, just add some (less than recommended) micronutrients when you do a water change. Most plants will love it and start growing. NEVER add macro nutrients. They are already there.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I touched on all you mentioned briefly and explained Tom's method in short...but i have videos on the ph and Ammonia/ammonium and phosphorus cycle and carbon cycle, on and on. Color enhancing ...low tech, no tech, high tech hehe. But yeah it was really hard to cram what i did into this, let alone all the exceptions and techniques out there. I just wanted folks to understand how the basics worked in this one

    Hey Alex, I enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them.
    But I suggest you try shortening them/being more concise. I think they would do better.
    It's not a huge deal, but for example the first 8:40 could have probably been compressed to say 3-5 minutes.
    Just a suggestion !

    Comercially awailable agricultural products is the best fertilizers. Dirt cheap, easily awailable, possible to adapt every single nutrition according to current limitation and it makes you understand excactly how every nutrient affect the growth. No reason to use specific aquarium fertilizer.

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So youll only need a liquid fertilizer. Likely without nitrogen if you have a decent number of fish... your light im guessing will limit the nutrient needs before it gets very high since none of those plants have roots in the soil.
      Perhaps 1 time each water change add a pump of one of the all in one formulations... aquarium coops works but has nitrates, so just keep an eye on those getting too high ( i change water at 40 ppm or so usually). Or i belive brightwell has a high potassium...no nitrate all in one liquid... flourin i believe is the name... id recommend that the most probably. Most companies instructions over dose the fertz ...cause they want to sell you more lol
