that interior is a giant NO. This is the first S class I've seen where I actually hate the interior. It's like Mercedes took all the worst aspects of modern interior design and crammed it all into one space. Capacative touch, piano black, no physical buttons, screens not integrated into the dashboard, infinite distractions. It's truly awful.
@@eddymichaels5486 Have you been in the new S class already? I have to agree with teh Capacitive buttons, after a 24hr test drive in a Golf, they are a big NO from me.
The interior integration of the 4 large displays is awkward. Their protruding surfaces are incongruent with the esthetic of the space. The older model seems nicer.
@@videosforcatsanddogs214 ...Or left the displays like the previous model... and thrown out those stupid rear seat ears. Those look incongruent, like the kids left their toys about.
I wouldn’t necessarily agree. I think the outgoing interior design has its classic exuberant looks about it and the new interior is more minimalistic and modern. I like the new interior as well if you look at it as its own entity. I think the use of capacitive buttons and black piano plastics is more of a concern than the interior
A large luxury car should be designed and styled like one, that is, an S-Class like an S not like a CLS, CLE and so on in swollen mode. The W223 looks like a swollen coupe. The front interior does not even look like a car but more like a virtual cockpit or that of a test car with those floating screens, nearly no buttons or dials and blank-like dashboard. Some people call this the modern look but modern does not mean throwing floating screens on blank-like backgrounds or in front and down of a 'crater'. The W223 simply does not look like an S-Class, and minus the grille and the star, it does not even look like a Mercedes-Benz exteriorly as such but more like a mixture of Jaguar models, Asian cars and other cars.
@@shantoshseewooruttun5105 screens are the future in cars, so even if not now, Mercedes would have had to change the design of its S class interior. Because the S class is its class leading model they had to set the direction beginning with this model. I think the new design doesn’t look bad but it certainly is quite a departure from an opulent interior design in the outgoing model. Nothing is ever set in stone, things change constantly so we just have to learn to live with certain things. One of them is an over abundance of screens in new cars
@@grandcalifornia8410 I am not against screens but I do not like how the front interior of the W223 looks with those screens and the background, and I also prefer some buttons and dials for certain things than all on touchscreen. Mercedes seems to be focusing on safety and yet they threw a big screen to control many things that would be so much easier and require less eye off the road if they were by dials or buttons. That is somewhat counter-acting. That front and rear exterior are such a turn-off. This car looks like a swollen coupe, not like an S. The headlights and tail-lights are those that fit the coupe styles not the limousine-styles. If I was in the market for a luxury limousine-style car, I want it be like one and not like a enlarged sports coupe that when every time I look at it, it feels that something is wrong. I agree with you that things change and will change, and we have to adapt to certain things, but not when it comes to things that you will buy with your own money and spend part of your life in it. For me it is simple, like buy, and not like, do not buy. Not because something is termed as modern or of the future that we have to accept it or buy it. Buying a luxury high-end car that will be be kept for more than 5 years is like buying a house if the customer is someone that will care on how his car look aesthetically to his taste. There is also functionality, comfort and convenience. It has to be to our liking and taste to a certain minimum. Of course, nothing is perfect and there can be some compromise, but the W223 has too many turn-offs (most of which are aesthetics) despite the positives such as the technology. We have to express our opinions so that people know what we looking for.
We have an old s class. 1986 500 sel. Everything works. All needles etc. imagine this one 10 years down the road. No screen will work and will be in a mechanics garage all the time. The interior is too complicated. Rolls Royce can do the same but doesn’t and it’s makes sense. We humans like tactile touch. This won’t work in the long run. I love my old merc more and more each time I see videos of the new ones. Bullet proof it is. Thanks Thomas. Appreciate your candor especially when it comes to the interior. One more reason not to buy one off the bat. Thanks 😊
Sami Khan - love the W126 - and that single cam per bank all-alloy 5-litre engine (in Euro-spec) was a charismatic engine, whether in a W126 or an R107.
Honestly, if I were to spend 150K or 200K on a new Mercedes-Benz S Class, it means I could spend even more on a car. That's why, in such case, I'd certainly prefer by far to buy a Bentley for 250K, or even a Rolls-Royce. No doubt. E Class maybe. S Class >>> No. A Bentley hands down!
Where have Mercedes designers been in the last 10 years? Seriously, capacitive buttons and lots of black piano trim? Haven't they learned with other manufacturer's mistakes?
That instrument display looks way out of place. Like someone just attached a tablet behind the steering wheel. And that central console looks like a fingerprint magnet with that large screen and piano black all around it. I dont like it at all, buttons were much better.
@@Alexandrius_Caesar Because I didn't like their new interior design, which consists of sticking couple of (touch)screens around the driver seat and some piano black, you instantly assumed I am a boomer? Also, I'm not sure how is that an insult, but OK, you have a "cool" nickname on TH-cam, so you must be the smart one.
@@iCoolaxe Best part about it - it is probably much cheaper to produce so they can make even more money. Someone should tell that to Bentley and RR, they've been doing it wrong all this time.
I agree with Thomas about the technology led path of reducing the button count/capacitive buttons/touchscreen controls - sometimes it is much better and safer to have a manual control that you can feel without taking your eyes off the road.
Fantastic impartial and real-world review. I feel this S Class is not a relaxing experience as others have been, nor is it as well appointed as an S should be
This new S class is a mess inside and out. Looks like a South Korean design of what they think a S class should be. Tragic for a MB flagship. The BMW 7 series is significantly more superior now.
Market perspective is buyers from the east and a lot of sales in the west are for fleet and rich people, that praise to be discreet in the crowd. Read Maneger Magazin from German and you will understand
Okay I’ve read some comments Amd haven’t seen anyone else mention it. So I guess I’ll be the first to comment on the real luxury in this video which is the gentleman giving the review! Handsome as can be! The car doesn’t make the man, the man makes the car! Amen!
Yah. They need to look at Bentley for what quality can actually be. Not screens sticking out everywhere. This S Class interior will look terrible in 10-15 years' time; Bentley interiors will still look fantastic.
Thomas, I traded in my Alfa Giulia for a used W221 S 550. I really am enjoying my new (used) luxury sedan! Its even better than I expected. Pure quiet ride, and wonderful experience. Cheers!
Previous generation S Class with horizontal design interior feels spacious. New S Class vertical infotainment presentation between driver and passenger appears to make cabin look smaller. How does it feel when driving? Does the infotainment screen intrude on your right leg/knee while driving?
I own a E500, mercedes benz , and i gotta speak the absolete tru;th . this is the best vehicle that i have owned. it is the ultimate driving experience without a doubt. this car is untouchable. i love it and i wouldnt trade it for any thing.
All touchscreen and capacitive buttons are just ABSOLUTELY outrageous to have in car. The cars went to shit nowadays. Capacitive buttons on steering wheel also? Are they out of their mind? How is someone supposed to press those buttons without looking at them?
I would really examine the knowledge of the current design department at Daimler. Have they ever seen the previous S class models? seriously, how can you possibly see those cars and end up with such a stupid interior design. Now, I hate Tesla more! the idea of using a big display in the purpose of money-saving in the cars was established by them. damn stupid.
When will auto makers learn luxury doesn’t = technology? Or at the very least, technology shouldn’t replace tactility. Can’t help but wonder if cutting back on so many physical switches was primarily for cost savings...
I think that’s exactly why they cut back on physical switchology. I have thought that for years now. No way I’d buy this car and I would actually be MB target demographic to sell it to.
Thomas, you are such a gentleman and professional to care about the safety and survivability of the driver of the car who hits your car from the side :)
Always prefer and like Thomas's review on cars, not only objectively reviewed the pros and cons of each car but also call out to all car manufacturers to be accountable for more sustainable practise, by using animal-friendly upholstery.
I actually think it's more 'visually relaxing'. If the screen was flush like in the A6 it's not quite inclined enough and you're more distracted by the surrounding trim and background vision since there is no elevation and border. I think it's actually very clever by Mercedes. True innovation will never appeal to the mainstream at the start. I appreciate the 'Stuck-on' tablet design for those reasons but really, it's part of a more elevated centre console design if you examine it.
You’re not kidding there! Those will very easily freeze up in cold wintery climates. That just invites component failure. The same goes for Aston Martin’s windows which automatically crack open during door opening and closing to allow the doors to open upwards as well as outwards. MB’s motorized door handles and AM’s dependence on its windows having to open to allow for door opening and closing are immediate deal killers for me.
@@DJRenee So what you’re saying is to just leave it in the garage 24/7? Not even to drive it to work or wherever you need to go? That kind of defeats the purpose of a car. In the northeast just leaving a car outside for a few hours is enough to freeze everything up.
Technically I'm sure it is a great car, but if I was after something like this I'd rather buy outgoing model. Styling and unintuitive ergonomics are big No for me. Cars (I still think so) are for humans, no the other way around!!! Btw. Great presentation by Thomas as always. 👍
I kindly disagree. This is the 1st S class that I love everything about. I loved the previous model's interior but not it's dated exterior, especially is 'slopey' angled front grille. This for me gets the Exterior finally right. The grille is passive aggressive that is a very quirky but accurate reference to snobbish or High society in general. And I don't mind the screen overload inside, why not?
That disgusting screen with thick corners right across from the wearer and that trough with the head-up display looks really bad. If I were to buy a car in this class, I would definitely buy an A8 or maybe Bmw...
Thank you again. One _Autogefühl_ video so close to another. I feel so blessed. I have seen the car in person in a showroom, as I have said in the Caddy video, but sadly have not driven it, so I cannot speak from that perspective yet. Next year I will drive it. For now, I would really love to give my initial thoughts on the new flagship model. Note that my thoughts are not finalized because I have not lived with the car yet. These are just initial thoughts. So, let's get into it. Here is what I love and don't love. Before we really start, I have to say, that rear-axle steering is really a blessing for me. As someone who drives the previous S-Class (pre-facelift long wheelbase) quite often, I know the struggle of an extremely large S-Class. Just looking at the clips demonstrating the rear-axle steering is making me weep for joy. I have already shown the owner the rear-axle steering (and the rest of the car. They are also happy. They are interested in this car. They may buy. 99% possible. The exterior: I really love how this car looks, especially the back lights with the three-dimensional LEDs. It has a really fancy and cool effect. The paint of mine was a beautiful black with no AMG line. I like the non-AMG line one more. This is a first in a while. Typically for previous S-Class models I love the AMG line one more. I really like the more sleek styling. It is still a massive car, but it does hide its size better than if it were more stately. The interior: The version I got was the one with the brown wood trim with the aluminum strips. Extremely beautiful. It really does have that yacht effect with the curved dashboard. My favourite part is the rear area. Very lovely. With that being said, even though I love the interior...there is this special touch missing. The car is special, yes, but there is this feeling that is missing. I can't explain it well. Hopefully, I can find someone who has actually *extensively* experienced the car in person like I did, and maybe they feel the same. Maybe not. That would be a great discussion. As I said, I drive the V222 (pre-facelift) with the exclusive steering wheel quite often, so that feeling does not translate. With that being said, I understand 100% why the new S-Class is like this, and there are all great reasons. I respect that. That is why I am not upset about that. Oh, and about the piano in the centre area. It can be matched with some of the dashboard trim. This car in the video with that interior trim on the dashboard can be added on the centre console where the gloss it. It is an option. Anyway, the car is really comfortable and spacious. I can spend forever in there. I wonder how it feels when moving. Ergonomics: I do not think the ergonomics are bad, but I do not think they are a big step up from the previous one. I do love the screen. It is a high quality screen with an amazing processor and software. That is a huge plus. I can go on forever about the impressive engineering of the screen and a lot of the car, but let's save that for a later stage. The three-dimensional view is trippy. I love it. Definitely a fancy feature. Okay, now I will get into my problem with it. I am not happy with typing this part, but I have to be honest. My problem is that one of the things I love about Mercedes-Benz is that there are so many various options to control the infotainment. That is the one of those luxury things I really love about their cars. With this S-Class, they have removed some of that. Yes, the excellent voice assistant is there to help, but the choice to use something else besides the voice assistant was also there. For this car, it is either the touch screen, the steering wheel, gestures, or voice. In other Mercedes-Benz models, it was those four options...plus the physical hot keys and the touchpad. The hot keys and the touchpad were more convenient. And it is not just the variety I love, it is the method in which those varieties where implemented. Here is what I mean. Let's take the 2020 GLS. To operate the system, I have several ways. Touch screen, touchpad steering wheel, hot keys, gestures, and voice. All of these things have a unique feel and motion to them when operating. The touchscreen...was a touchscreen that felt like a screen that I swipe with my index finger. The touchpad felt different to the screen. The steering wheel swipe things felt different to the touchscreen and touchpad, which I swipe with my thumb. The hot keys were buttons with quality feel to them, which I press. The gesture control felt like wizardry, which I whoosh my hands. With this new S-Class, however, some of the different methods to control the system feel the same. The screen feels like a screen, which I swipe. The steering wheel kind of feels like the screen, which I swipe. The hot keys (with dynamic selects, cameras, volume, etc) feel like the steering wheel, which I swipe. Yes, the steering wheel also has press, but they don't feel too emotionally different to the screen, unlike the in the GLS where the pressing of all the different methods felt...different. I feel I am getting the same feedback using different methods to operate the same thing. I liked it more when all the different methods of operating the system felt...different. It felt like Mercedes-Benz was considering all my different human touch sensations with the cold metal buttons, to the glossy swipe, to the softer touchpad. For this S-Class, most of the different methods of operating the system feel the same. That variety feeling is missing, but not gone. It does not feel quite there...even though it is. I hope I am making sense. The verdict: Do I love this S-Class more than the previous one? Overall...yes I do. I love it a lot. However, when Mercedes-Benz refresh their cars from an outgoing model to a new one I am always in awe of how the jump is so large. Take a look at the new GLE, the GLS, CLA, GLA, A-Class, even the facelift E-Class, etc. These new models are so ahead of the previous ones, I never look back. For these cars, I never wish for much, if anything, from the older ones to be put in the newer ones. The never ones always reset the bar and are such a high improvement with little to no drawbacks. That is why I love Mercedes-Benz so much. Their cars are so good. However, with this new S-Class, even though the jump forward is large, there are more drawbacks with this new model than any other new Mercedes-Benz models I mentioned. Notice that I said I never look back when I see the new one. For this S-Class W223...I am looking back at W222 more than I would like, more than I have any Mercedes-Benz model in years. That is terrifying. Worse because this is their flagship model. Sadly, this comparison is mostly unfair because I have driven those cars, but not this S-Class. My verdict of those cars setting a new bar and being huge improvements is helped with how they drive, not just ergonomics and innovations. I extensively look at the entire package of a car, not just some of it. That is just how I look at cars. Back to the S-Class. Now, let me be very clear: I absolutely am for change. I love change. I am always open to change and innovation, and I am willing to keep an open mind and try it out extensively, even if the initial sight of that change or innovation is puts a bit if doubt with me or if other people hate it. I do not care how other people feel. I want my opinions based purely on my experience, not someone else's experience or feelings. I am always open-minded. And as I have mentioned in the Caddy video, my thoughts on the cars ergonomics are in pencil because I have not driven and lived with the car like I do with other Mercedes-Benz models yet. We shall see. Overall, I really love this car. I love so much about it. I have even said that this car is in my top five favourite S-Class models. The level three and four autonomous systems in this car are incredible. The way this car is produced is incredible. What this car stands for is incredible. The new Factory 56 is so impressive in what they achieved, and it won't be long until all Mercedes-Benz cars are produced this way. This car is still a benchmark...like so many of its ancestors. But unlike most its ancestors, it is a benchmark not just how it is as it stands, but also how it is built. This is my dream car. It is absolutely fabulous. Those are my initial thoughts. I just noticed that this comment is extremely long, and I have not even mentioned everything I wanted to say. This is only 40% of what I wanted to say. This is the "short wheelbase" version of my thoughts, lol. I am so sorry that it is so long, but I hope it was not a pain to read, Thomas. Cheers. Have a great day. 🤗
Well obviously Merc went with a techy approach which ofcause is very nice and uhm techy, lol. But to be honest, I kinda miss that classic luxury feel that we grown used to with the S badge. But great review as always from Thomas🙏
Thanks for your Review, Thomas. All this expensive tech fest is great for technophiles - fancy HUD, big 'tablet' in the dashboard, "Smart Phone" operation of controls (I thought it was illegal to use a smart phone when driving) etc. But more to go wrong for technophobes! All interesting, but at 33:30 I don't like it with these modern cars when you get messages on the screen(s) you have to read and take you eyes off the road... no such distractions in that 1979 W116 S-Class you drove in August. Best wishes.
Hi, I like all the comment that you said in your video specially with that digital screen in the center I hope Mercedes brings back some Manuel bottons . Also the looks , I love the front of the car however the new look in the back is so not like Mercedes , it looks like Audi or Volkswagen , Kia, (my opinion ) Thank you for sharing your Video with us .
Loved this review Thomas. Very glad to see that there is a cloth option. I'm not for digital buttons either. I definitely agree with you regarding cost cutting with regards to digitalizing the buttons, especially for luxury sedans, in this SUV crazy world. Keep up the good work and thanks for this upload! Warmest regards to the Autogefühl family! Cheers!
Eliminating shortcut buttons to offer a more minimalist visual appearance and hiding their functions in menus and submenus that actually require a learning process and more steps to operate, is actually a technological backward because it makes all their use less direct, less practical, less intuitive and much more complicated. Replacing physical buttons with movement and solid "click" feedback (that you know tactilely when you have activated them) by static sensory capacitive buttons (that you do not know tactilely when you have activated them), is also in my opinion another step-back for the senses and the satisfaction of general use. I also don't like the tendency of incorporating increasingly larger screens that designers are still unable to integrate into the dashboard and console that visually show a heterogeneity of "ruptures" instead of "a homogeneous set" and are left "floating" with unsightly protrusions that, unlike smooth surfaces, make cleaning them more difficult, and gaps where dust and dirt accumulate. I also have to say that the overall perceived quality of all Mercedes-Benz vehicles nowadays, when it comes to materials and fitments, is not at the level expected from such a premium brand and, much more especially considering, from their flagship model, the S Class. It feels very plasticky inside (for instance, much of the interior chrome is actually steel-colored plastic, rather than metal), there is too much piano black, and there are creaks in certain parts of the cabin when specific things are touched, such as the central screen. Finally, to finish, the current exterior designs with a "wedge" profile (nose and rear both inclined too downward with a markedly curved-convex center line) do not convince me at all. I liked the straighter, more horizontal and stylized older designs much more.
I know everyone is talking about the S class, but I have a bit of bad news for the new E53-at least in the U.S.. It turns out that the Dynamic Plus Package, with the those beautiful red calipers, is not available as an option for the 2021 E53.😭 Let me know if that is the same for the European models.
Great review, high class for sure. Not wild about those screens in the interior. I guess I'm a fan of old school analog gauges. Digital gauges look cheap to me. But otherwise, car looks nice.
Last truly great S class was W140. I like lots of this, it really is a technical tour de force but it just looks like it's already been out for 2 years already.
From NYC. Thanks Thomas! It lost some expected S Class opulence, including the unmistakable Big Benz Diplomatic grill. But we will have to see it in person to judge it. Other comments below, said the new tech will be bad tech, very soon, as evidenced by low low prices on used S Class cars. BUT, let's agree, S Class owners never cared about the cost of ownership. The old saying is, "If you have to ask the price, you can not afford it."
The door handles are a step backwards relative to earlier models and will not be very easy to use for visually impaired passengers who prefer to be independent and open them for themselves.
Wonderful review and superbly delivered. Watch his A8L 2021 review in Norway. He is much more excited about that car :). Driving an A8L 2020 I was extremely interested to drive one as you drove here but that one had no rear entertainment package yet the long base. It happened last week after waiting for the car for 2 months. All in one I experienced a very quiet and soft drive, precise steering, and braking but this is all about it. Everything else I experienced is probably better on A8L. Your observations with respect to the screens and usability were spot on. It felt awkward and unfinished in comparison to A8L where everything flows superbly with the climate section fully separated for easy access. Not to talk about the A8L cockpit design and how the maps are displayed. The seats were a real disappointment compared to A8L which cover your posture very well including the shoulders. I tried hard to configure the seat to like it but I gave up easily. The plain Burmeister audio system didn't impress me and forces my hand for an additional $7000 upgrade. At the end of the test drive, I pulled next to my car and compared the exterior designs. I saw a dull and boring look compared to my A8L which has a more dominant presence and refined lines (it's just me and that is personal). Price-wise here in Canada, this S580 starts from $145,000, and getting carried on with packages easily jumps over $200,000. Since such a car speaks for 1% of us this price is not an issue however where to compare the value to the price you might reach some grim conclusions. If you want to make a statement of richness probably Maybach is better suited or Bentley. Bottom line! Not my car.
The central screen and the associated loss of buttons are a major mistake. The clustered steering wheel buttons will lead to the wrong button getting pressed repeatedly. The rear wheel steering seems to be the major advance of this model.
The recent craze towards using capacitive buttons is so foolish and immature in terms of design choices. Some times good old functionalist design elements is better than necessarily insisting on incorporating the latest technology.
Removing nearly all physical buttons and replacing them with touch-sensitive buttons and screens is not a step forward. They should have kept physical buttons for at least some basic functions. Also, gloss black plastic just looks cheap. Is everyone at Mercedes drunk?
You are right. Buttons look way more luxurious. I don't get it. Smartphones are not allowed to use while driving, but more and more cars get (cheap looking) touch buttons and touch screens, which makes it as dangerous as using a smartphone. As you and Thomas said "not a step forward".
I thought luxury brands spend alot of time tuning their physical controls for a luxurious feel, but for this car, they completely threw that out. Capacitive touch buttons and an Ipad, in a 100k Mercedes? This is a god damn joke. I can't even make the cost saving argument for this the way I can for the VW's and teslas. This is unacceptable from Mercedes Benz and Autofuhl should have gone harder this.
Always like this: lots of criticism but then the designers normally are right as time goes by, certainly the interior. But the door handles are stupid. A nightmare to force open after an accident.
my first thought about this new design is that it looks like a bigger Corolla from the back, and the interior is more like a Tesla. not sure if i like it more than last gen S Class.
Super review of a magnificent car. Far too much tech for many people.......buy a Sandero. Clarkson once told Hammond that the M5 could not do 0 to 60 in 5 seconds. Hammond disagreed. Clarkson said 'GO!' and Hammond spent 2 minutes setting up the car! Same here.
Mmm not convinced about this new model. The headlights remind me of Vauxhall/Opel Insignia. And that slab of shiny plastic on the dash really reflects badly and doesn’t look premium to me.

that interior is a giant NO. This is the first S class I've seen where I actually hate the interior. It's like Mercedes took all the worst aspects of modern interior design and crammed it all into one space. Capacative touch, piano black, no physical buttons, screens not integrated into the dashboard, infinite distractions. It's truly awful.
Especially that screen behind the steering wheel looks very retrofitted.
I completely disagree, everything about this is amazing
You do realize that you can also order a plethora of different wood trims?
@@eddymichaels5486 Have you been in the new S class already? I have to agree with teh Capacitive buttons, after a 24hr test drive in a Golf, they are a big NO from me.
The four ugly air vents don't even line in the center compared to the screen. I will be keeping my gorgeous W222 for many years to come.
I respect that you are not afraid to point out thing you dont like, a lot of moto journalists will only say praises as to not make MB angry
The interior integration of the 4 large displays is awkward. Their protruding surfaces are incongruent with the esthetic of the space. The older model seems nicer.
I agree. At least they should have used high-end screens with thin bezels.
@@videosforcatsanddogs214 ...Or left the displays like the previous model... and thrown out those stupid rear seat ears. Those look incongruent, like the kids left their toys about.

One of the best car review channel on TH-cam. Excellent camera work. Very detailed
A luxury car interior shoul be styled like an expensive watch. This interior looks more like a cheap "smartwatch".
Well said.

No I know I can buy one for my wife 💪
Where have Mercedes designers been in the last 10 years? Seriously, capacitive buttons and lots of black piano trim? Haven't they learned with other manufacturer's mistakes?
Exactly. In a world all on their own.
Very well said, I think these are the worst implementations
I think they were all being developed at the same time. It's just the S class took a little longer than a reskinned Golf 7.
It's just cost cutting. Their slogan "the best or nothing" doesn't hold truth at all anymore.
I dont't know. The interior even looks drab in grey colour.
That instrument display looks way out of place. Like someone just attached a tablet behind the steering wheel. And that central console looks like a fingerprint magnet with that large screen and piano black all around it. I dont like it at all, buttons were much better.
Boomer alert
@@Alexandrius_Caesar it’s just his opinion I personally like this car but yea his opinion I guess
@@Alexandrius_Caesar Because I didn't like their new interior design, which consists of sticking couple of (touch)screens around the driver seat and some piano black, you instantly assumed I am a boomer? Smh, shiny black plastic and big tablet screens = luxury. Everyone knows that.
@@iCoolaxe Best part about it - it is probably much cheaper to produce so they can make even more money. Someone should tell that to Bentley and RR, they've been doing it wrong all this time.
Thank you! I was waiting for only two specific driving reviews for the new S : yours and Doug’s. Yours came first! Great content as ever, thank you!
thanks m8 keep tuning in!
I agree with Thomas about the technology led path of reducing the button count/capacitive buttons/touchscreen controls - sometimes it is much better and safer to have a manual control that you can feel without taking your eyes off the road.
Fantastic impartial and real-world review. I feel this S Class is not a relaxing experience as others have been, nor is it as well appointed as an S should be
One can always argue with looks - what you can’t argue with is that this is the most comfortable car to drive right now! Full stop!
This new S class is a mess inside and out. Looks like a South Korean design of what they think a S class should be. Tragic for a MB flagship. The BMW 7 series is significantly more superior now.

It seems that the designers of that interior did not pass a job interview at Tesla, but were nevertheless hired by Mercedes.
@Grizzly Reaper LOL modern does not equal intuitive or practical. The laziness of just throwing tablets throughout the cabin reek of Tesla
Yah. They need to look at Bentley for what quality can actually be. Not screens sticking out everywhere. This S Class interior will look terrible in 10-15 years' time; Bentley interiors will still look fantastic.

The interior has gone back from the previous generation. The rear looks like a bigger version of a Mercedes A sedan which is not a good thing.
I love the new interior styling, it harks back to the old Mercedes of 60s.
Thomas, I traded in my Alfa Giulia for a used W221 S 550. I really am enjoying my new (used) luxury sedan! Its even better than I expected. Pure quiet ride, and wonderful experience. Cheers!
Cool enjoy man!
The rear lights look like a 2017 Camry.
I thought so too! Very Accord’ish or Camry’ish.
Rear is awful. Even the interior taillight design is terrible.
Yes, you are right, this is the most beautiful side of the car.
Previous generation S Class with horizontal design interior feels spacious. New S Class vertical infotainment presentation between driver and passenger appears to make cabin look smaller. How does it feel when driving? Does the infotainment screen intrude on your right leg/knee while driving?
First S-Class that has nothing to give to automotive industry.
I own a E500, mercedes benz , and i gotta speak the absolete tru;th . this is the best vehicle that i have owned. it is the ultimate driving experience without a doubt. this car is untouchable. i love it and i wouldnt trade it for any thing.
Fantastic car. So much better than a huge SUV. If I was looking for a luxury car, this is still the benchmark.
I am very dissapointed by this new S class. I own Mercedes E class from 2016 with AMG package and I like my interior more than this S class. HAHA :D
The car sounds so quiet and isolated. So relaxing! I wish cheaper cars could be as quiet on the hwy.
Needs a screen in the exterior.
Can't believe I've spent all my day off watching Autogefuhl reviews
Your ego.., gotcha you!

This S-class lacks class 😄
I love the interior but cmon man the dash is BAD. It’s like someone’s glued an iPad to a flat dash....terrible.
My favorite car, Favorite model, also my favorite Reviewer. Win Win.
Lots of problems on the way with those door handles
You’re not kidding there! Those will very easily freeze up in cold wintery climates. That just invites component failure. The same goes for Aston Martin’s windows which automatically crack open during door opening and closing to allow the doors to open upwards as well as outwards. MB’s motorized door handles and AM’s dependence on its windows having to open to allow for door opening and closing are immediate deal killers for me.
@@jumboJetPilot no he's not kidding even 'quality' of door handles are pretty cheap!
I said the same thing
@@jumboJetPilot garage
@@DJRenee So what you’re saying is to just leave it in the garage 24/7? Not even to drive it to work or wherever you need to go? That kind of defeats the purpose of a car. In the northeast just leaving a car outside for a few hours is enough to freeze everything up.
Im going to sleep but this video keeps me wake. Have waited for days. Thanks Autogefuhl!
Technically I'm sure it is a great car, but if I was after something like this I'd rather buy outgoing model. Styling and unintuitive ergonomics are big No for me.
Cars (I still think so) are for humans, no the other way around!!!
Btw. Great presentation by Thomas as always. 👍
AGREED
The exterior:
I really love how this car looks, especially the back lights with the three-dimensional LEDs.
The interior:
The version I got was the one with the brown wood trim with the aluminum strips.
Ergonomics:
I do not think the ergonomics are bad, but I do not think they are a big step up from the previous one.
The verdict:
Do I love this S-Class more than the previous one?

Would be very cool see you reviewing other trims, colors, interiors and engines of this model
Yep, I still would like to always see some good old traditional Wood on an S-class =)
So what happens if the handles close in while your hand is still grabbing it?
Oh no.... what a disappointment. A large CLA from the outside and a cheap looking interior. Even the A class looks more luxurious.

Loved this review Thomas. Very glad to see that there is a cloth option. I'm not for digital buttons either. Jonas's angles at the beginning better than the Mercedes commercials
Yep good thoughts and agree
I think that Mercedes need to stop replacing some parts with unnecessarily complex components . Those door handles and seat switches are awful
No thanks, I'll just buy a 2014 S class for $35,000.
You're not getting a 2014 S-Class for 35k. You're looking at a first gen W221 for that price.
Thomas why is there an air intake on the dashboard? lol
The door handles are a step backwards relative to earlier models and will not be very easy to use for visually impaired passengers who prefer to be independent and open them for themselves.
4D surround sound?
My car has 6D surround sound seats, steering, mirrors, doors and even the dashboard vibrates with music.

Not my car.
Thanks for the feedback!
It must take you days to prepare for these presentations....The detail you bring is very impressive....I think I'd prefer the E class, however...

The central screen and the associated loss of buttons are a major mistake. The clustered steering wheel buttons will lead to the wrong button getting pressed repeatedly. The rear wheel steering seems to be the major advance of this model.
Very complex machine with some very nice comfort features. Not sure this is the direction buyers want.
The recent craze towards using capacitive buttons is so foolish and immature in terms of design choices. Some times good old functionalist design elements is better than necessarily insisting on incorporating the latest technology.
Did they cut the budget for the interior production cost? Plasticky and luxury doesn't go hand in hand.
Wie Ghets, Thomas. Nice review. Will someone please save us from the ubiquitous overuse of Tesla type screens instead of simple rotary knobs!
That grill doesn’t go with those headlights
When I am too old for my CLS53, I'm getting this
at Brabus they will have to do a lot interiorwise
all the glossy black plastics.....awful (it should be anodized aluminium or dash trim)
I really like the driving wheel, but not glossy.
Nobody is mentioning the boot. It is far too small for Chauffeur cars. Suitcases are getting bigger and boots need to accommodate at least two now.
Beautiful car. Such a shame they won’t be doing the coupe and convertible variations though.
The new SL will replace it
@@yes8032 doesn’t makes sense cause the SL and S-Class coupe/convertible are completely different cars
@@dr-ok3sn it’s true the SL will replace it

Mercedes copying Tesla what has the world come to
amazing interview as usual BUT this car...i dont know i dont like backlights and also interior is not that great :(
37:44 "if you gay" 😂🙈
Flo Rian 😂
Stunning looking car! Very very classy indeed.
I predict that this is going to be the last internal-combustion powered S-class also.
love the smart parking demo at 47:00...
it just need empty floors and bodyguards
I thought luxury brands spend alot of time tuning their physical controls for a luxurious feel, but for this car, they completely threw that out. Capacitive touch buttons and an Ipad, in a 100k Mercedes? This is a god damn joke. I can't even make the cost saving argument for this the way I can for the VW's and teslas. This is unacceptable from Mercedes Benz and Autofuhl should have gone harder this.
Always like this: lots of criticism but then the designers normally are right as time goes by, certainly the interior. But the door handles are stupid. A nightmare to force open after an accident.
Great review as always and a fabulous car! Wow!!!
Would like to know any chance that hands will be Jammed by the door handle.
my first thought about this new design is that it looks like a bigger Corolla from the back, and the interior is more like a Tesla. not sure if i like it more than last gen S Class.
It needs external security cameras like teslas centry mode. Get with the times already!
Same here.
at least this will curb some of the massive depreciation that the outgoing w222 experiences. Well played mercedes ;)
Does the augmented reality direction assistance work with waze/Google maps?
Mmm not convinced about this new model. The headlights remind me of Vauxhall/Opel Insignia. And that slab of shiny plastic on the dash really reflects badly and doesn’t look premium to me.
I'll be glad when the fashion for diamond-quilted leather has finally run its sorry course.
