The Winter Olympics are over, but that doesn't mean we're done being obsessed with the events. We interviewed an expert about the Olympics, ultra-endurance events like biathlon, and the truth behind "mind over matter" in sport: bit.ly/2t8PzCc
biathlon should be the mandatory training for every military trainig... but if you live in a nation without snow... change the ski tool with skate board.. it way cooler than hiding behind the rock like a lizard :v
Biathlon is only unusual because it is one of the few Olympic sports (and the only one in the Winter Olympics) that still resembles the military training that the Olympics was based on.
They still do, it’s usually the only people who have the time to do that specific training but they are really not good at horse part or they just get horses they aren’t familiar with.
What's the difference between a poster that asks citizens to join the military vs a poster that asks citizens to "Volunteer to the benefit of their brothers"?
That one poster would be an official statement from the Swedish military/state, and that the other(Volunteer to the benefit of their brothers) is a non official military backed poster(Frivilligkåren is not a part of the military in the same sense). Because if it was, then Sweden wouldn't be able to call itself "neutral" anymore.
I already knew this! It's actually the reason why I love watching this discipline so much. Not only do I admire the physical prowess of the athletes, but I love the rich history behind it!! Thanks Vox for another great video!
Thank you for the video 🤗 I absolutely love biathlon. I discovered it on TV a few years ago and have been watching every single race since then. It really seems to be getting more and more exciting every season. So many athletes who can finish on the podium and so many different events. I am lucky to live in Germany. Biathlon is after football the second most popular sport here. Obviously considering the fact that the Germans currently are the strongest team in biathlon, helps gaining new viewers every year. I really hope that it gets more attention, especially in the United States or Great Britain. It already is very popular in huge parts of Europe. This sport is so entertaining. Absolutely love watching it every winter.
I performed biathlon at high school years and it was my best memories of teen years. It helped me in military service with focus and concentration. Horaah.
As a norwegian, it is wierd for thinking biathlon isn't a well known sport xD Growing up, I lived in parts of Norway where skiing type sports was one of the main winter activities, and football (or soccer if you prefer =P) in summer. Didn't know about biathlons origin though, so this was interesting. Great video Vox! =D
i told this to my aunt the last week when it was on. She was wondering why shooting was only in the biathlon and i mentioned how it was used in warfare and how Finland fought back the soviets with it and was able to keep their independence. It is truly a very atheletic sport, cross country skiing works like every muscle in your body and then in order to shoot with accuracy they have to slow their heart beat way down, you require immense control of your body
My mother loves watching biathlon so I grew up watching it every winter. I knew Ole Einar Bjørndalens name before I even knew the full names of my grandparents. It's also one of the few Winter Olympic competitions Germany can actually win.
In fact until _very_ recently (earlier this century) Modern Pentathlon had pistol shooting, and even today it's a laser target game, effectively the same as the pistol shooting except you don't need real guns.
Pentathlon was originally an Olympic sport built around a hypothetical situation from the days of cavalry warfare: a cavalry trooper returning from patrol finds himself trapped behind enemy lines. What other sport combines horseback riding, fencing, pustol shooting, running and swimming?
Vox we gotta make a video about the tensions in South Africa because of the new law taking land without compensation. I think racism gives birth to more racism and hatred and bigotry. Regardless of skin colour, culture, religion or back ground differences we should all be united against racism and bigotry and people who wanna create cultural wars. Lets be stronger together regardless of our small differences because we make each other better.
genocide amerika yeh good luck with that nationalist rhetoric all it produces is more hatred and destruction. The most powerful country in the world is a the most diverse.
whites still own the majority of land in south africa. calm down there with your claims of white genocide. It's in the SA constitution that their government must allow all citizens equal opportunity to be able to get land. Clearly right now if you look at the statistics this is not the case and there is a severe imbalance left over from Apartheid rule where most of the property still resides in the hands of the few. It's a country rife with inequality along racial lines.
James Tang the objective of the war was to get all of finland, like the offer to get karelia and couple islands. For example, they offered a same kinda deal to estonia and it led up to estonia being soviet controlled
Oh. When I thought: _that's a weird combination,_ I just assumed shooting was added to make the skiing harder, forcing a person to control shaking and heartbeat to shoot well. Never knew it actually is a historic combination
0:48 "Cross country skiing, use in history and war, some addition to and illumination of our earlier conditions of military conscription" "Kristiania(Oslo's old name), printed at 'name of printer' - 1865, with 3 lithographs" just in case you wondered ;)
Even as a fun event, I'd love to see downhill skiing or ski touring mixed with the shooting. Definitely something you could get people to embrace here.
I want to see ski jumping combined with skeet shooting! You set off with your two-shot shotgun - as you jump off two skeets are sent flying across your path. Points is then awarded for number of skeets downed, style and jump length. A surefire crowd pleaser! -Regards, A Norwegian
Yeah. A a lot of Finns see it as a sort of victory even if it technically a loss simply because they manage to keep there independence in the end. The true fear many Finns had at the time was after all that they would end up as a part of USSR or as a puppet state of USSR. USSR after all did not seem to have any issues with gobbling up is neighbors. Why Sweden was so scared to and indirectly supported the finish cause.
"No other sport combines athleticism and weaponry" - not true. There's the pentathlon, which is essentially "everything a young noblemen should know" (or rather "a 19th century soldier should know"), and has been part of the modern Olympics since the beginning. 1. pistol shooting 2. Swimming 3. Fencing 4. Horseback riding 5. Running EDIT - and in particular, the final event is pretty much the biathalon, only in summer - so you're jogging/pistol shooting, rather than skiing/rifle shooting. (Although, to be fair, apparently the modern Pentathlon version uses a laser pistol for some reason, rather than a real pistol. Safety concerns, maybe?) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_pentathlon
Vox- After that “although they lost the battle” comment about the winter war, I thing it’s only fair you follow up with a “winter war, explained” video. At the time, Finland did not have a military, but Finns held off one of the largest military powers in the world. This took a huge tole on the soviets. As Finns, we are extremely proud of the winter war despite having to give up some land. People who haven’t studied the war tend to draw conclusions about it, when by all means the winter war is full of anomalies.
Somehow I, an American who only watches biathlon during the olympics, knew all of this lmao. I wish I could just happen to know and memorize things like math lmao. It would be so much more useful for me haha.
Ok so iv had an idea for the longest time and i want it to take off. Its call skate guns, take you're skateboard and what ever calibar handgun or rifle and do a trick off the ramp while hitting the target. Rules are simple each has one shot,30 feet away moving and the best tirck with a target hit gets the most points. Iv tried this with bb guns and it works pretty well. Only problem is safety concerns.
I'm just amazed that there is such a sport at the Olympics, but squash, bowling, cricket, karate, muaythai, etc. aren't included (Correct me if I'm wrong).
I was in 10th Mountain division... In Louisiana, a state known for its flatness. 10th Mountain division does not train Mountain Warfare anymore. I honestly believe the mountain tab should be the same as the Airborne tab and should be a requirement for American mountain soldiers
I don't know about any decisive battles that the Fins lost as history shows evidence of them inflicting heavy casualties and winning alot of strategic battles. However, they did loose the war, regarding which the term should be kindly corrected @vox
Vox, why are you not making a video about what's going on in South Africa? You could do a video about the systematic racism and the drought at the same time.
The Winter Olympics are over, but that doesn't mean we're done being obsessed with the events. We interviewed an expert about the Olympics, ultra-endurance events like biathlon, and the truth behind "mind over matter" in sport: bit.ly/2t8PzCc
Vox :)
You may found that even Duelling was a competition in the precursor games to modern olympics.
biathlon should be the mandatory training for every military trainig... but if you live in a nation without snow... change the ski tool with skate board.. it way cooler than hiding behind the rock like a lizard :v
2:45 That Olympic graphic was way too slick. Give your animators a raise
Lashan yes I agree
they always have good motion graphics and animation it is really hard work
Right?
As a Norwegian, I'm proud to wear skis and a rifle on my way to work every day
Why do you wear a rifle to work? What do you expect, a polar bear?
Tage Wærdahl HAN KØDDER. Akkurat som når folk fra Australia sier at de rir på en kengeru til skolen
HÆ? Har Australierne jugd til oss? Men de sitter vel i posen i alle fall?
Tage Wærdahl made my day lol
Kristian Myhre-Bjerkenes depends if you count svalbard as part of norway or not ;)
Biathlon is only unusual because it is one of the few Olympic sports (and the only one in the Winter Olympics) that still resembles the military training that the Olympics was based on.
Team Peg Leg Pentathlon is crazier.
Pentathlon competitors used to be a lots of military officers.
They still do, it’s usually the only people who have the time to do that specific training but they are really not good at horse part or they just get horses they aren’t familiar with.
This has to be one of the hardest Winter Sports. Combining 160 bpm and shooting? Insane!
The Swedish poster isn't for the Swedish military it is telling sweds to volunteer to the benifit of their brothers (the finns)
What's the difference between a poster that asks citizens to join the military vs a poster that asks citizens to "Volunteer to the benefit of their brothers"?
one was to help finland
AYANDA VILAKAZI maybe freight guns and rations over to the finns?
That one poster would be an official statement from the Swedish military/state, and that the other(Volunteer to the benefit of their brothers) is a non official military backed poster(Frivilligkåren is not a part of the military in the same sense). Because if it was, then Sweden wouldn't be able to call itself "neutral" anymore.
The difference is that this asks you to join the finish military and not the Swedish one (despite being Swedish).
I already knew this! It's actually the reason why I love watching this discipline so much. Not only do I admire the physical prowess of the athletes, but I love the rich history behind it!! Thanks Vox for another great video!
*Skiing and shooting at the same time? Sign me in!*
hate to be that girl but you meant either sign me up, or count me in
Haha! But to be fair to the OP, there must be a "sign in" at the Olympics!
Thank you for the video 🤗

I've loved this sport since I was young, think it's the mix of physical and mental strength needed makes it so interesting to watch :)
Call it 'shooting skiers' and viewership will quadruple overnight.
That is what it is called in Norwegian
lmao
Lise Amalie C you are correct. Kind of. It is Ski shooting in Norwegian
yeah it's "ski shooting" in Swedish too
1 sec just got a text
As a norwegian, it is wierd for thinking biathlon isn't a well known sport xD Growing up, I lived in parts of Norway where skiing type sports was one of the main winter activities, and football (or soccer if you prefer =P) in summer. Just so you know: the loss against russia is seen as more of a victory here in Finland because we weren’t completely annexed
juhko_vids And you completely crippled an army bigger than your population, thats a victory in my book
Well if you really won you wouldn't have lost 11% of your territory.
i told this to my aunt the last week when it was on. Winter Sports and Norway. Name me a more iconic duo.
In the past triathlon and pentathlon both featured shooting (which is why the non shooting pentathlon is called modern pentathlon)
Yes, Kaisa Mäkäräinen in the thumbnail!

Jan Rey Cerdeña yeh it does unfortunately some people are using it to fuel even more racism. The earlier we address it the better
Yep. A good topic to cover.
Eltener123 it's an extremely recent topic.
genocide amerika yeh good luck with that nationalist rhetoric all it produces is more hatred and destruction. The most powerful country in the world is a the most diverse.

you've been skiing for 5 miles now, heres your gun.
In Norway we call it 'skiskyting', meaning 'ski shooting'.
And in Finland we call it "ampumahiihto" aka "shooting sking"
I wouldn't say that Finland lost the winter war
They lost Karelia which was the Soviet objective so they lost.
James Tang
Soviets wanted all of Finland
1. The Soviets offered to buy Karelia off of Finland and Finland refused.
2. Losing land is not what many would call "winning a war"
James Tang the objective of the war was to get all of finland, like the offer to get karelia and couple islands. For example, they offered a same kinda deal to estonia and it led up to estonia being soviet controlled
Sure, but remaining independent is enough of an achievement to call it victory

Biathlon is simply amazing
Man the music and style of this video is great
I love old fashioned adverts and information videos
Ethaniel Clyne yes me too

Such a well made video, loved it!
Damn, the editing in this video was really top notch!
ThePickyGamer true
Honestly was just kinda nice to have a lighter-hearted Vox video to watch
Loved that vintage feel
Terrance Brown me too
There should be a horse archery too in Olympic if this kind thing available. I mean it definitely requires a lot more skills & concentration too.
Mongolia would win every time...
Even as a fun event, I'd love to see downhill skiing or ski touring mixed with the shooting. Definitely something you could get people to embrace here.
I love this. Wish it was longer.
Kiitos Oskari!

I really like the editing and graphics in this video
Great vid Vox!
The art direction in this video is remarkable.

Matthew Carlyon agreed
Very interesting.
Mai Know the name of the music track you used during the video?
Never knew about this!
Thanks Vox
Solid edit. Love the circle theme.
One winter sport I get behind!
This video answers a question that I never made but I wanted answered
I’ve been to Camp Hale (now a national park) in Colorado where the 10th mountain division trained
That's a very good video VOX!
The Finnish army despite all the odds. Kept the massive Soviet Army at bay in their own backyard.
Yeah. A a lot of Finns see it as a sort of victory even if it technically a loss simply because they manage to keep there independence in the end. Biathlon is such a cool sport.
2:06 I’m curious to know why the Norway skier has an ss helmet. Is it from when Germany invaded Norway?
yeah.. it was german propaganda that was written in norwegian
This is great. I was thinking about asking Vox about this sport.
Us Canadians appreciate you have taken the time to study our culture

Omg that theme song "For Your Eyed Only" stuck in my head not sure if I love it or hate it.
