    Spirituality is another reason people have soft mounts. Some folks need to connect with the indigenous culture and learn something. I love your collection

    The older people that don't like them is probably based off monetarily because if more people go to doing soft mounts then they can make less money

      Really if they were smart they'd jump in and make 'em too, lol. Soft mounts are neat 'cause they tend to appeal to a wider audience than traditional taxidermy does.

    I just ordered some supplies today to do a soft mount coyote, i love the floppiness and how they aren’t just statues. I just want something i can keep on my bed and cuddle while binge watching my favourite shows.
    I don’t get why soft mounts could be considered disrespectful to the animal as i think so long as you take care of your mount it doesn’t matter whether it’s traditional or whatever.
    That aside i am literally dying of excitement for my pelt and other stuff to do my mount to arrive so i can get started, I’ve loved taxidermy for a while now and can’t wait cause so far i only have some tails.

    I've started with preserving bird wings. Now I've graduated to bird taxidermy and mouse taxidermy. Now I want to start with bigger stuff! I'm very excited to make a soft mount in a while when the right animal comes along. Going to go on a lot of bike rides in hopes to vind some good roadkill. Thank you for telling me more about soft mounts

    I'm new to this community ,I see taxidermy as a way to cope with death see as I just lost 3 of my childhood dogs last year to cancer ,and a friend if mine is working on a taxidermy coyote for me and I'm about to start my first taxidermy project myself , I'm excited but nervous. Any tips on soft mounting. Thanks

    I did taxidermy for many years off and on . I had surgery on both arms so that kinda stop me for many years now . Now that I’m retiring I want to get back into it . I have came across the soft mounts and love it . But I can find all kinds of videos on how to Mount the old way but nothing on the soft mounts . Are there any videos on TH-cam or anywhere that shows how this neat technique is done .

    • @wolfforce58205
      @wolfforce58205  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's awesome if soft mounts can give you a way to get back into it!
      As far as I know, TH-cam doesn't really have any videos showing how it's done, but there's a couple Facebook groups you could join to learn more about it! Check out "Soft Mount Taxidermy Enthusiasts" (best group in my opinion) and "Soft Mount Taxidermy Artists and Collectors".
      A soft mount is pretty basic though if you already know how to do taxidermy. People usually use change-out heads, then clay the paws and stuff the bodies with polyfill. If you want to make them poseable, you'll need to add in wire armeature, which gets a bit more complicated (make sure it's well secured into the headform and/or paw clay, use a gauge of wire that's sturdy but still pliable by hand, and I'd recommend wrapping it in cotton batting as well....kind of like if you're making bird legs).
      Good luck with your endeavors! =D

    they are the adult version of stuffed animals, lets be honnest tho....we want one thats like a stuffed toy that we can toss around and stuff like that becouse fun

    • @wolfforce58205
      @wolfforce58205  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you toss them around you're going to break them very quickly. They're much more like a collectible porcelain doll than some stuffie; sure you can touch them and gently "play" with them but they're pretty fragile and mainly for display. The weirdo's china cabinet, lol. They're great for movie or photo props (albeit with unrealistic body anatomy), but if you roughhouse with them you just spent hundreds of even over a thousand dollars on something that can and will literally fall apart if you aren't careful.

    Is the armature just wires? If so, what are they connected to or is all the wire connected? I'm trying to picture it and can't imagine the wire goes from the paw and just end independently in the body. And just an FYI, I'm a 40 year old male amateur taxidermist and I think the soft mounts are bad ass and super versatile. Your's look awesome!

    I would like to know what kind of tanning solution you use

    • @wolfforce58205
      @wolfforce58205  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't use any, I don't tan pelts. I've heard if you want to start learning tanning EZ Tan is a good way to go, but again I don't tan anything myself, never have, so I can't say from experience.

  • @pinkbammer

    I am wanting to try to make my own soft mount. Where would be a good place to purchase a hide? Also, should it be tanned?

    • @wolfforce58205
      @wolfforce58205  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You'll definitely want a tanned hide, otherwise it will rot. For a soft mount it's recommended to get a "dry" or "garment" tanned hide (you can work with a "wet tanned" hide, but you'll need to break it in fully before you work with it, which is a lot of extra work). Ideally you'll look for pelts that are case-skinned to make less work for yourself.
      I know there's some good sellers on Etsy (my favorite is ChallengersVeir), Moscow Hide & Fur also is usually good quality, umm, otherwise eBay can be hit-or-miss, and if you get friendly with any local trappers/hunters and don't mind tanning your own stuff/sending it to a tannery that's always an option, too.

    Do you tan your hides

    • @wolfforce58205
      @wolfforce58205  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do not. I'd need a license to buy green pelts in my state, and do not hunt, trap, or fur farm anything myself, so I just rely on buying finished products. That, and tanning seems like QUITE the process, haha (fleshing alone is tricky enough for me to say "no thanks"...when I've tried I always just ended up putting a bunch of holes in the pelt).
