    Helios Flight 522: How One Switch Led to the Deaths of 121 Passengers
    =====
    Everything was fine - the weather was clear -the flight was in good condition - the pilots were well experienced with a total of 16,900 flight hours. So what went wrong - Aapko janna chahatehoo? - chaleyee janee hai..
    On August 14, 2005, Helios Airways Flight 522, a Boeing 737-31S, was travelling from Cyprus, to Prague, Czech Republic, with a stopover in Athens, Greece.
    The flight was under the control of Captain Hans-Jürgen Merten (who has an exp of 16900 hrs) a 58-year-old East German contract pilot hired by Helios and First Officer The first officer was Pampos Charalambous, a 51-year-old Cypriot pilot who had flown exclusively on Helios for the last five years, and has an exp of 1549 hours.
    The Flight and Initial Problem --
    Flight 522 took off from Larnaca International Airport at 9:07 AM local time with 115 passengers and six crew members on board. within a short period of time it gained a height of 12040 feet. Shortly after departure, the crew experienced a pressurization issue and an alarm started ringing. It's the takeoff configuration alarm. which rings when the flight is grounded and the aircraft is not ready for take-off. As the aircraft climbed, the pressure inside the cabin gradually decreased. The pilots are confused now as they dont have any solution for this problem
    Soon the pilots radioed the Helios operations centre and reported "the take-off configuration warning -- As they were talking several warning lights on the overhead panel in the cockpit illuminated. The master caution alarm began ringing, indicating that multiple systems inside the flight were overheating.
    Both the pilots are getting nervous as they have no idea whats happening.. The oxygen level started falling and as a result they were unable to breathe properly. The oxygen mask dropped automatically, whenever the oxygen level is less the oxygen mask drops of its own. At 34,000 feet, the crew and passengers began to suffer from hypoxia, a condition caused by insufficient oxygen.
    The Fatal Chain of Events
    Again the pilots spoke to the ground engineer, and repeatedly stated that the "cooling ventilation fan lights were off.but by then they also stated suffering from hypoxia. The engineer (the one who had conducted the pressurization leak check) asked: "Can you confirm that the pressurization panel is set to AUTO?
    The pilots didnt hear carefully - instead asked "Where are my equipment cooling circuit breakers? This was the last communication with the aircraft.
    The flight was supposed to reach the athens airport at aorud 10.45 Am -- At 9.24 the flight reached the height of 34000 ft  At 09:37, the aircraft passed from Cyprus flight information region (FIR) into Athens FIR, without making contact with Athens ATC.[4]: 17  Nineteen attempts to contact the aircraft between 10:12 and 10:50 also met with no responseBut still not there is no info of this aeroplane.
    At this point, the Greek military decided to intervene..believing there may have been a possible terrorism incident.At 11:05, two F-16 fighter aircraft took off in search of the flight
    The fighter jet located the Helias plane and tried to gather info whats happening so they jet went close to the passenger plane..When the fighter pilots approached the aircraft, they observed the co-pilot slumped over in his seat and no visible movement in the cockpit. In the passenger cabin, oxygen masks were deployed, and passengers appeared unresponsive.
    2 fighter jet was flyinf so close the to passanger plane and noone is even pipping through the windows -- there was no movement. SUddenly the jet pilot noticed that someone entered the cockpit and trying to fly the plane. Ten minutes after the loss of power from the left engine, the right engine also flamed out, Flight 522's fuel eventually depleted, and both engines flamed out. The aircraft began to descend uncontrollably.
    and just before 12:04, the aircraft crashed into hills in the vicinity of the village of Grammatiko, 40 km from Athens in East Attica, killing all 121 passengers and crew on board
