    They are called tamales in Mexico, singular form is "tamal", and here in Dominican Republic we call them "pastel en hoja" which translates to cake in leaves, the plantain leaf wrap ones are a typical dish here.

    I’m half salvi and Mexican that first tamal looked like a “tamal de elote” or a corn tamale. The masa is usually made from a different kind of corn (a younger yellow corn) which gives it that sweet flavor ( some add sugar as well). In El Salvador butter is used in the masa which gives it that cream base taste your thought was coconut. Mexico also has a corn tamal plus an additional sweet tamale that uses the savory masa but the filling is pineapple and sometimes raisins- this has a sweet and savory taste.

  • @smack8531
    @smack8531 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    South American cuisine is so much more complex that this.. although the food here isn't South American. We're a continent of many people and languages. South America is vastly colorful in landscape, culture, food, music, clothing, pride and people. It's where Africa meets india by way of The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Asia, France, England and we can't forget our beautiful indigenous first people, Amerindians. I really hope you dig a little and do this one over because I believe you'll really fall in love with our Golden continent. Signed a proud Guyanese South American.

      So you’re basically taking a shot against Central American and Mexican cuisine? Since you said South American is so so much more complex. I don’t see the need for this, as a Latino I love and appreciate food from Mexico, El Salvador, just as much as Peruvian or Brazilian food.

    • @smack8531
      @smack8531 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jakebermudez2841 out of everything I typed, this is your takeaway. I was speaking specifically about South America which as a South American I felt the need to do. At no point did I mention Latin America or Mexico as you did. The fact that you mentioned them only validates my point. South America is more complex than pastales and pastry as I'm sure Latin America and Mexico are as well. Re-read what I stated to comprehend while withholding a response and you may come to realize I insult no one. Sending positive energy your way.

    Hello Quang. That sweet tamale that you tried is actually a Brazilian variation called pamonha.
    Whoever reads this pease let me know if other countries in south america do eat sweet tamales as well. Which is basically corn with sugar.

    • @Marzipanx_x
      @Marzipanx_x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! We all have our different variations. In Mexico, we have sweet corn tamales as well as tamales with pineapple and such.

    • @leonardopab5
      @leonardopab5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Marzipanx_x that is nice!
      Here the tamales, called pamonhas, can be sweet or salty. They are made of corn, not sweet corn, and the most common ones are the sweet ones, in which they are added sugar to the corn massa.
      Though they are sweet, some of them are filled with cheese, which gives them a good sweet/salt balance.
      We don't have many variations, with fruits or such. Usually is either just the corn massa or with cheese. But it is possible to find pamonhas filled with sausage or salt-cured meat as well.
