The protagonist of the story is Zhu Yingtai, a smart and beautiful young woman. However, due to the feudal customs of ancient China, women were not allowed to receive education. Yearning for knowledge, Zhu Yingtai disguises herself as a man and adopts the name "Ma Wencai" to attend school.
At school, Zhu Yingtai meets her classmate and close friend, Liang Shanbo. They immediately form a strong bond and become close confidants. However, Liang Shanbo is unaware that "Ma Wencai" is actually a woman. Despite this, they share deep conversations and develop a profound connection.
As time passes, Liang Shanbo realizes that he has fallen deeply in love with "Ma Wencai" but struggles to articulate his feelings. Eventually, he discovers Zhu Yingtai's true identity. However, by then, the twists of fate have already set their tragic love story in motion.
Despite their mutual love, societal constraints and tragic circumstances prevent Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai from being together in life. According to legend, after their deaths, they transform into a pair of beautiful butterflies, forever united in eternal love.
