Literally happened to me. I have high porosity hair and started my locs with two strand twists and dyed it and my hair broke off 😫dyed it back black so fast lol never again lol
I've been looking for a video for my locs for the longest time and I didn't find they reasonated with the information but this.... This video is a great video.
Thank you for this video. It has been a learning experience since atarting Mt loc journey. I would like to see more videos on porosity. Maybe doing a video for each porosity. My stylist told me to put oil in my dry hair, well the oil doesn't penerate my hair and Sits on my hair like water beads. She also told me water isn't a mosituzer. I'm getting the feeling that I need to change stylist . Your video was very helpful
I don't want to speak ill of your stylist if you still have her. However, oil is not a moisturizer. It is a sealant and possibly a carrier meaning that it allows whatever else that you put in your hair to be carried to the matrix of the strength into the cuticle of the hair and past. The follicles of pastor lifting leaves that she's now speaking about in regards to high porosity. So if you are low, porosity oil is almost your enemy. Your ideal moisturizer should be a more liquidy based moisturizer such as a water based or not water, but it can be water, but it doesn't have to be plain water. Rose water comes to mind immediately. Any kind of liquid and then sealed with a cream. A light based cream. For your low porosity hair. Well should only be used in extreme weather or that is drying out your hair more than normal. And then in that case you want a lightweight carrier oil such as jojoba oil, grape seed oil. Some people like coconut oil but it also has a protein base and it can be irritated to some people. Jojoba oil and grape seed oil best mimic the oil that your scout naturally makes a sebum on your scalp. But as I said before, cream would be your best friend, a liquid type moisturizer with all the healthy ingredients that you can find and if they don't have enough I am prone to putting mines in myself. I constantly add vitamin e. I always add a little tea tree oil and peppermint or scalp simulation to help improve growth and whatever else I particularly think that my hair might need. I'm so sorry this was so long, but I felt like I needed to be sure that I cover everything so that you can make the best decision for your hair
I have to disagree with the points you've made from 10:23 to 11:31 ... as a high po girlie (naturally high po) i had a lot of slippage. Since I was doing DIY I was able to see why... BECAUSE my hair will very easily temporarily grab on to anything and everything around it, it gives a false illusion of security or locking. Especially if you have very baby fine 4c high density stands. But just because it'll grab on to everything doesn't mean it'll hold on to anything... similarly to the way it'll let water in and then right back out. It is not ACTUALLY locked in and so it'll slide right out just as quickly as you thought it locked in. For the same reason my hair doesn't and never did hold anything... not a hot combing, not a perm, not a cornrow, not a braid... within seconds it'll look like it's been in 4 months, so messy and hairs escaped everywhere. Or it'll be shrunk like we never took 12 hours to press it. But when you got to this section at 19:48 it makes me wonder if you're only addressing hair that is high porosity from damage? Because you keep calling high po hair brittle dry and hard over and over, which is certainly true about chemically damaged hair that is high po but is not and wasn't the case with my naturally high po hair. Prepooing was not a good idea for me hair as a loose natural. Hygral fatigue is real and deep. That prepoo and steam stuff was for the low po girlies. My hair would only suffer. It LOVES a good sulphate/clarifying, a protein based shampoo or conditioner, an acv rinse, being washed and rinsed in cool water... As a locked girlie I would never put oil or conditioners on my hair and would NEVER EVER steam my hair... but I'm thinking that these are tips for girlies who started off low po and then via damage became high po? Cuz I've discovered that it was a lot of those practices that were causing all the breakage and weakness to my hair. 🤔 I know a lot in hair care is YMMV but i find a lot of what you've said so dissonant to what I've learned about getting my naturally high po hair to thrive both as a loose natural and in my locs I'm very interested to know if I'm missing something like if you are just addressing the folks whose hair became high po via chemical or heat damage? 🤔
This was an amazing video. I just found you and have been binging your videos. I’ve learned more from your channel than all others combined! I’ve been locked (2 strand twists) for a bout 1.5 years and my hair makes so much more sense to me now.
Very helpful. Thank you. I'm 4C lo porosity and I did not band and braid because I thought my right curl pattern would make it hold. I had sooooo much slippage. It was a mess. Now I know better

This video is so informative! Thank you for taking time out to educate us on how low porosity and high porosity works with locs. I recently switched from traditional locs to mircolocs. I'm 6 months in and I noticed my scalp is extremely dry and flaky with the sisterloc dandruff shampoo I'm currently using. I just purchased a low porosity shampoo buy Shea Moisture that clarifies. I'm praying it won't dry my scalp completely out. I will definitely try what you suggested. Wash hot with shampoo only for now (since my locs aren't mature yet) and seal with cool water at the end of wash. 🙏🏾
Thank you for all you give! I’m a few day shy of a year and I just started back braiding and banding. I’m HIGH porosity and am so glad and appreciative of your knowledge 👏🏾👏🏾 I will now start to pre-poo 👍🏾
Sure thing! I will definitely be doing a more detail video for just low porosity. But the main thing is during the shampooing process, rinse the conditioner with cool water to seal the cuticles. Also, after applying a leave-in conditioner, use a sealant (oil) to lock in that moisture.
Thanks so much for this bit of knowledge. I've been micro braidloc'd for almost 20 months and my hair is mostly low porosity. Also, I have a much looser curl pattern in the front and crown areas of my head. ( The curl patterns on my head range from 4c to 3a) So far, the locs in the back and sides (which are 4b/4c), are mostly locked, but my front and crown areas have made no progress. The braided section in those areas still looks freshly done and only the interlocked portion at the top gives the idea that I'm trying to lock my hair lol. I thought it really odd until I listened to this video.
Yeah, different textures will react differently than others. But it is very common for the hair in the back and front to loc first. That top part is always last especially with a looser curl pattern.
It has always been hard for me to determine this. I assume since i bleach my hair is high porosity hair. However, it seems it either low or medium! My curl pattern always seems to snap back. It seems to suck up any moisture, the air, and never let go.I still do protein treatments. I have an appointment to get starter locs at the end of the month. I guess can't get them since i just bleached.😢
i'm high porosity and i hate it soo much. no matter what i do, a retwist last 3-7 days max because the moisture escapes 😢 i'm debating doing a big chop. healthy hair > long hair
My hair gets dry and from what you said I believe it’s highly porous because it dries fast after washes and will take in and kick out product as you’ve said 😂. But I also have dry flaky scalp as time progresses between washes
Great video… However my hair is actually low porosity, It doesn’t absorb moisture well. I have to use very moisturizing conditioner or shampoo. It’s usually dry and dried ver quickly, because it barely absorbs moisture. I do have pretty shiny and smooth strands, and it it pretty dense. It’s prone to breakage from drying, and I have to steam treat it, and moisturize frequently. Also 💦💦💦, is my best friend. I have to drink a lot!
Thank you for your wealth of knowledge. This is the first time I've heard of the two finger test for hair porosity. Does it matter the texture of your hair? Mine is kinky, and so it is naturally bumpy and not smooth. I believe I have high porosity hair. How do you distinguish the hair smoothness from the texture?
@KiaraPalmerS yes, I would recommend to do a couple of treatments before getting started. Definitely protein treatment using a streamer with very low to no heat.
Thank you for this informative video. I just hegij with my locs journey(almost 2 months) and i have high porosityb with with medium density. Is it. safe to loc the moisture with oil on starter locs? And to do oil treatment in the beginning of my baby locs?
@@blessedwithcoils I wouldn't do it for low porosity hair to avoid hygral fatigue. You can do deep condition treatments , hot oil treatment avoid one a month
I really don’t know if my hair is high or low but I know my hair is not very dense. After my first wash(3 weeks after micro loc installation) it looks almost Afro-ish. However no slippage that I can tell
So I know they say no oil but it feels so dry after the clarifying shampoo(carol’s daughter wash day delight) I just put an itty bitty amount of oil on my scalp. What are my other options
