At Cooperstown there is a video that plays in the auditorium and Mariano is featured remembering his time in baseball and he said “having a gift is when the batter knows what is coming and they still can’t hit it.” One of the most powerful quotes from one of the greatest players to ever play the game.
I was saying that while he was pitching. I remember one time I had this friend who was a Red Sox fan. He got mad at his own closer for not being more like Mo. I told him don't bother because it's not fair to his pitcher. Mo is special. He is one of a kind and if you are going to compare every pitcher to Mo then you will never be happy. The pitcher was Jonathan Papelbon. I said that what Papelbon was doing was normal. What Mo did was beyond comprehension. Even Mo shouldn't be pitching that good.
@Vincent Cuttolo Nah dude. It wasn't one year that Mo did well. It was year after year after year. He was always either number one or in the top three. It was ridiculous.
Most closers if they are lucky dominant a few years; Mo did it for almost 20. Anytime he entered a game the other team basically knew it was almost impossible to come back. One man, one team, one pitch; and he stayed humble and focused throughout his entire career; in an age today that most athletes do anything but. I’m glad to say I saw him pitch his whole career from 1995-2017. Mariano was the best closer and I say with confidence there will never be any other like him!
all facts. you could've been standing 0.1 inches away from Mariano when he pitched and before he came up you hit 5 home runs in the same game. You weren't hitting anything but space and air lol. Much respect to Mariano Rivera
And so many dominant closers never recover from failure. 01 and 04 never got in this mans head. Good for him. And correct me if my memory is wrong but didnt he fail in 97? If so the man went on an incredible run after that

If this didn’t bring a tear to your eye you have no soul. Was and forever will be one of the greatest legends of Baseball, and one of the best human beings ever.
Oh and to the people who disliked this, seek professional help. Lol
When I watched this speech live I was wondering who was cutting onions in my house as a Yankee fan who was born in 1989 and got to see his entire career from as a kid in 95 all the way to grad school in college. Watched his final out and cried my eyes out. Mo was the true cornerstone of the Yankees dynasty
The greatest closer in the history of baseball.
A pillar of the great Yankees dynasty of the late 90s.
“The Sandman” Mariano Rivera.
Thank you, Mo.
-a longtime Yankees fan
Thank God Yesssssssss!!!!!!!!, Mo God Is So Good To Us All
Class....Pure and simple.
Whoever hit the thumbs down on this has no appreciation for the game of baseball!
MO ALL CLASS!! GREATEST RELIEVER EVER!!
Let's Go Yankees!!!
Absolute legend! Congrats Mo!
I'm glad I was born in the Bronx & grew up a Yankee fan. From Gehrig to Mariano to Babe to Jeter. I can deal with all the other teams sucking because the Yankees win enough for ALL the other leagues combined! 😂😂 Not to mention they are a class act organization & you'll never hear about "spygate" or "deflategate" from them. They do it right.
I'm not from NYC, but the Yanks are the Yanks. Even during their lean years...we always look to see how the Yanks are doing.
You deserve this honor and you deserve to be the first pitcher from the Yankees organization to be in the hall of fame congratulations Mariano and to have Jeter there that’s incredible
No one will ever compare! We'll deserved 42!
To be fair he was grandfathered in. Every player that was wearing 42 before they retired it could still wear it after.
OMG!! He played for the Yankees in ALL his career. 😱😱😱 That's what I call fidelity. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
He, like Posada, were trade capitals more than once in their careers. Fortunately, the Yankees didn't pull the trigger on any of them.
On one occasion, Posada AND Rivera were going to be traded for David Wells, but years later, Rivera could sit back and watch Posada coach Wells up on his 'hungover perfect game'.
George Steinbrenner wouldn't let Mariano go to another team. He was the best relief pitcher in baseball.
@@BrockMak Also Jeter.
@@javiersp15 yeah. Cashman pleaded with George on keeping him.
A class act from day 1. The last #42. Once a Yankee, always a Yankee. Congrats Mo!!
A real class act. Not to mention his on field accomplishments.
Congrats Mo.... From a Tigers fan.
As a Red Sox fan, there is no better man for the Hall than Mo! What an amazing man! And yes, he was an aight closer....Lol! How many times did he end our dreams?
viva panamá desde la prov de Herrera mariano Dios te bendiga te qeremos..
They always save the best for last. The GOAT
That’s cute?
The only relief pitcher who must be on the short list of the greatest pitchers of all time. The closest to an automatic out there ever was. Wow!
El mejor cerrador de todos los tiempo apaga y vamonos orgullo de panamas
The best closer of all times hands down.
Mo was and is the best , thank you for all the memories .
Congrats. You’re a legend
Orgullo panameño💪🏻👊🏻🇵🇦
He has his own church and his wife is the pastor there, really cool
Jorge Posada being a fan with his phone out is awesome!
As a Dodger fan I always loved Mariano Rivera he was always lights out and was a class act and Jackie Robinson was his hero congrats Mo
More people have walked on the moon (12) than men who have scored against Mariano Rivera in the postseason (11).
What a great Yankee.
Enjoy your retirement.
Always a classy --- un tipo con clase siempre!!!!
I watched him pitch live three times in me life, once at Yankee Stadium vs Detroit, twice vs the White Sox
The greatest relief pitcher in the history of baseball
Grande Mariano orgullo para Panamá
