Your colouring pages are some of the most stunning works i have ever seen 😍 so interesting and detailed. I personally like really easy designs with bold lines to that allow me to relax but those books are so stunning
Extreamely detailed coloring book illustrations are excellent for BEGINNING colorist because they can break out the shading to areas instead of having to do smooth fades on their own. Instead of fearing the details embrace it with Laziness! It is not harder, it is easier. As an expierienced colorist you might pick out ONE item from each page to do. ONE flower, or a bird or whatever. Study each page and pick out your favorite thing and do an amazing job on just that one thing. And then EITHER pick ONE medium (a particular brand of pencil for instance, and do every individual colored item with the same set of pencils. I would keep the pencils with the book until you were done. OR Make every page with a different medium, or mixed medium so every spot color portion is totally different. In either case I would jump around through the pages so that if you changed something, lost your pencils or your health changed, (did you know you can anticipate health changes or problems by the way you hold a pencil and the pressure you apply? Particularly your heart) In the case of mixed media you may get better and better or get different supplies, so mixing them up makes it less obvious.
@@jackiemattingly8041 I love your detailed answer, however I am very aware of that. ☺️ I simply prefer the clean look of bigger spaces with no shading since my shading is rarely done in grey scale if I do it at all and grey scale shading can look quite muddy to the eye. I do not jump between mediums because I use only alcohol markers which bleed a bit with normal paper as they are specifically for line free painting and they are meant to bleed together which looks incredibly smooth and I also never jump between pages and pick out what to paint as that stresses me out and rarely looks coherent. I like to pick a colour palette for one page and stick to it to make everything look coordinated. If I am in no mood to paint a masterpiece of an entire page but simply enjoy the process of filling a space with a simple colour I therefore prefer more open spaces with bigger lines and simply concentrate on going line for line with my alcohol markers which is much more soothing and calming for me than any other medium. I also mostly don't enjoy the pressure of messing something up which comes with quite detailed pages with intricate designs. Hope this was understandable please excuse my bad english. Thank you again for trying to help me 🥹
@@steffid_ ironically I knew you have such experience and knowledge, my comment was as much for, or directed at the colorist who would be reading your coments so that they (less experienced than you) might not fear an extremely detailed coloring book. And give them a second chance when looking for something to purchase. The less detailed the better artist you have to be to achieve beautifully shaded or textured illustrations. Large blank areas being harder for beginners to make look good. I was just throwing out another opinion. You said it was in your top 10 coloring books but then said the detail was overwhelming. Love your work by the way. The portrait that google puts up is my husband not me btw. Cant figure out how it got there or how to change it.
Great choices! I just recently got back into coloring but some of my favorites are Dominion of Giants by Eric Messinger, Alien Worlds by Kerby Rosanes, Morning Scribbles Christmas by Chris Ryniak, and A Million Sloths by Lulu Mayo.
Karlzon, Rosanes and Karron are my faves too as I get bored with pretty females too. Have you seen Jane F Hankins books? Absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing 🙏🌸 I subscribed as you are a superior colourist and seem to prefer my kind of art 🙏
Loved the colouring books RJ is such a beautiful person to talk to im a big supporter as he is another fellow Queenslander down in The Sunshine Coast as I’m in Townsville Qld.. ❤❤❤😊😊😊xxx

This maybe a dumb question, but how do you know which product to use for what you want to do? secondly what advice can you give a beginner person just starting out?
Hi! Good question! I honestly just wing it a lot of the time! However, I’ve been colouring since 2013 so I’ve learnt a lot along the way. It’s really a matter of trial and error! You start to learn what works in certain books and not in others. What mediums you enjoy working with or don’t etc. It all comes with time really! As a beginner, colour alongs definitely will help you to learn what works as the colourist has usually already worked it out for you for that book. If I’m not sure what I want to use and unsure if it will look good, I take a photo of the page and print out a copy on another piece of paper and try it out :)
Hi Karen, oh good question. Technically I don’t think any colouring book is designed to be used for water based medium however you can get away with it in most of the good quality artist ones when using a very small amount of water! I like using it in any of Kerby Rosanes’ books, Johanna Basford’s and Hanna Karlzon’s books. I wouldn’t use them in Amazon paper books unless you go very very light with the water!

Thanks!

@AColourfulEscape Thanks so much! I didn't know the Kerby ones had good paper in them, that's good to know! I have some from the other 2!
What did you use on the lips and eyes?
Can you link the books for purchase on Amazon or wherever?
