Definitely do more mini PCs with Oculink. The Oculink really sells these things being able to upgrade later on, like a regular PC, but with a smaller footprint and lower power consumption.
Every PC with a port that can have external video cards, should be tested by the TH-camr. It's part of the PC. It should be tested to show what it offers for that PC. An assumption that it will "just work" is just that, an assumption.
Agree, i wanted to buy a Minisforum UM780 XTX because of its Oculink port, but i think Minisforum is too expensive, i want to get an RTX4080 Working with those Mini PC EDIT: i just checked the price and it s not cheaper than minisforum, maybe 20$ depending on the models, i am disappointed.
@@freedomisdead9638 Do it! I have the Minis with a 7900XT eGPU and it's awesome. I wouldn't get a higher GPU than the 7900XT or the Nvidia equivalent, you're limited by the 4x bus and the mobile CPU having only 16GB of L3 cache vs a desktop PC that would have a 16x slot and at least 32MB of L2 (or a lot more if it's X3D). I had a 6800XT in it before getting the 7900, and with some games there's no difference, like Far Cry 6 for example got exactly the same FPS, whereas on a desktop PC it would be MUCH faster with the 7900XT. i have the exact same one, bought one on taobao back in china. been using it with debian as a lil mini server and also a gaming powerhouse while connecting to a custom oculink dock ^^ super awesome
A head to head with the Minisforum UM780XTX would be awesome. Specs and performance numbers don't tell the whole story - other aspects like noise also matter. In a lot of ways this looks better on paper, but I know from owning one that the Minisforum is very easy to live with, not loud or hot even with the TDP pumped up to 70w in the BIOS, etc. It would be nice to see them head to head and compare all this stuff.
I'd *ADORE* if these lil buggers could take a 50W mobile GPU internally. Add about 20mm height which could include a fan and more I/O. A teensy beast for 100W, and 120-130W powerbricks are aplenty.
This seriously impressive even if you exclude the Oculink option. It also has USB3.2 Gen 2 across all ports (not mentioned in the video) and HDMI 2.1 is also a bonus. Then you have the price, which when compared to many other devices reviewed costing much more, on the surface, this does look pretty good to give you an all round performer now and with enough versatility not to feel as though you are being left behind when the next CPU comes along in just a few weeks/months.
Could you possibly do a comparison video between using oculink and thunderbolt 4 to see the differences in game and stress tests? Just curious to see how they stack up using the same in game settings and what settings you can max out on with both thunderbolt and oculink. 🙏
This is super NICE! The front-facing Ocu Link and the dual HDMI 2.1 ports on the back are excellent features. The 1TB SSD and 32GB of RAM are a great value at £460. It will fit nicely behind my OLED TV.
I think the main downside of Oculink is that it is an internal connector rated for only a few hundred insertions. Oculink is great if you are building something that you only plan to unplug once every few weeks/months, but not multiple times per week, this is where i would choose USB-4/thunderbolt, or maybe think about getting something with built in dedicated GPU.
Is that really a downside of Oculink or just something the manufacturer decided not to implement? I mean kind of like USB C PD protocol where the power delivery was optional implementation.
It's nice to see a real 3*nvme Ryzen mini PC with OCULINK not taking up M.2 The UM780XTX claims to have 2*nvme, but if you want to use OCULINK, you have to take up an M.2 And according to reviews from people who have purchased the GEM10, the OCULINK bandwidth of the GEM10 is 1.0+ higher than the UM780XTX.
I've seen that comment, but not sure how anyone comes to that conclusion - it's a PCIe gen 4 x4 slot - 64Gbps is the spec. For this to be the case, the Minisforum would have to be performing at less than spec. Mine reads PCIe 4.0 x4 in GPU-Z and the SSD (I bought mine barebones and put a fast SSD in, not the cheap one they come with) performs exceptionally well in the other M.2 slot, so their bus seems to be fine.
I wish ASUS would do a Flow Mini PC. That'd be a great way to expand their Flow range. They could also do a Flow PCI-E card I suppose? Chuck the card in the PCI slot, then it just operates as a riser to the back of your case so you can add an EGPU.
Can you get an Oculink with a say RTX 4070 Super or something? Or just mobile versions and perhaps mobile versions of AMD cards? This mini PC looks fine other than the soldered RAM. For me that would be a deal breaker if I had the money to buy one. Still, impressive about the hardware and I LOOOOVE the three m.2 slots. Thanks for the video.
Similarly spec'd to the Elite Mini UM780 XTX but with improved IO, more M.2 support and faster RAM. However, this AOOSTAR costs 200-300 more for very similar system and GPU performance. And even with slower RAM, the Ryzen 7 7840HS in the Elite Mini UM780 XTX outperforms the same CPU in this AOOSTAR system. Can check it out. The Oculink not using up an M.2 port is nice though.
I am still waiting for an Oculink mini PC with Intel processor. QuickSync is simply unbeatable for video transcoding and if I really want to play games I could simply add a graphics card. However, almost all mini PCs still need to work on the noise level.
Interesting little box. It does bug me its using LP DDR5 instead of SODIMM, but as they do have a 32gb model I guess most users will have plenty of ram for normal desktop apps and gaming and the higher speed is a plus especially for the igpu performance. I'd still choose a Minisforum over this tho if you can find some 6400 Sodimm modules. Plus you can get up to 64Gb ram and it also supports oculink. I havn't really thaught of external gpu's being especially interesting, but this teased me a bit dependent how expensive those 7600 models coma at which should be a very reasonable gpu for up to 1440p. Eta Prime, if you are using the gem 10 with the internal gpu, the memory frecuency should be 800 mgz, and the cpu package power not more than 45 watts, and not almost 70 w. Please, comment
I'd have to set up these SSD only PCs to operate from an external drive over USB 3.x so that I can use my hard drives. Or get a full ATX chassis with room for fifteen or more 3.5 inch & 5.25 inch drives, use M.2 adapters with 5 SATA 3 ports per card to give myself thirteen 20+ TB drives with two 4K Blu-ray burners. Then a power supply to handle the load for the drives alone. Two power supplies really. One for the little PC. The other for the vastly more useful HDDs and ODDs.
I have the MinisForum UM780XTX and the parts for an eGPU, minus the card. I am considering this new AOOSTAR GEM10. I could pull the NVME from the UM780XTX and put that into the GEM10 and sell the UM780XTX. Hmmmmmm. I wonder if the extra NVME slots are worth the hassle.
I also have a Minisforum UM780 XTX and after comparing the OCULINK test bandwidth of AOOSTAR's GEM10 is over 1G higher than that of the UM780 XTX, and the GEM10 doesn't take up an M.2 slot, is cheaper, and has more data than I thought it would have, so I'd really recommend this machine.
Someone needs to make a JBOD Enclosure with Oculink. It would be awesome for a Plex/Unraid Server to expand the storage. You could then just upgrade the mini PC in the future. Low power and small footprint.

Because 1. the connector is not meant to withstand people who put their iPhone in an Otterbox and STILL manage to break the screen twice a year, and 2. Oculink is not hot pluggable and it will fry the motherboard if you plug it in while the machine is on, and the aforementioned geniuses would do that anyway ("Oh, I thought if I just did it once it wouldn't hurt" 🙃).
It makes no sense to have the Oculink port on the front and that's one of the negatives about this, despite ETA's "The best mini pc of all time" claims because Oculink.
Hmm ... what a letdown ... I was expecting the usual review for this one with LPDDR overclock to 7500Mts and maxed TDP. You could have done the eGPU in a separate video.
I own a gem10 and so far I could not make it work. Does only run at 6400mts. There is no guide on how to do this (supposedly you set the power to 45w. But there are several points in bios where you can adjust power.) And there are comments on the morefine video that also say it does not work. I haven t found a user coment that said it did work actually.
This is my second Gem 10 with a 7940HS and both were not able to overclock the LPDDR5 to 7500 mhz. On the official Aoostar Gem 10 page it is now writen : Note: In order to ensure the stability of the machine, the GEM10 overseas version does not support overclocking to 7500Mhz
@@berlin36moto have you noticed any thermal issues so far? I´m about to buy this GEM10 as well, but I'm so freak out about overheat problems, any advise or comment? thanks!
Yes. I have both, but the minisforum is still smaller (i think half the volume). I have the em680 but the Problems most likely are the same: It is quiet and very efficient, but it has half the power. The em780 should not be that different. When you plug in all the USB ports for example, mouse, keyboard, ethernet adapter and then connect a external nvme case, the mouse and keyboard stop working. I think it struggles to provide power to each port even if all single users are below 5W all together it does not work somehow. The whole machine runs at 65W (that is fixed by PD) the two USB4 alone provide at least 15w each, add 3 USB3 (5W min), SD card slot (5W) etc. It just does not add up. I bought a 100w PD charger, but the Problem remains.
This spells doom for all Minisforum offerings with similar form factors, especially their UM780XTX, which only has two NVME slots and no Ryzen 9 option. SMH

Oculink is not hot pluggable and it will fry the motherboard if you plug it in while the machine is on, and the aforementioned geniuses would do that anyway ("Oh, I thought if I just did it once it wouldn't hurt" 🙃).
Dont know why he never put upscale infor with the resolution infor ! Like 1080p low - frs performant ...
oculink nice, but wouldabeen better if it's placed on the back side
you forgot to enable AMD Anti-Lag when you enable Amd fluid motion frames.
Emulation testing even switch emulation testing PLEASE !!!
It makes no sense to have the Oculink port on the front and that's one of the negatives about this, despite ETA's "The best mini pc of all time" claims because Oculink.
Don’t worry, it’ll only hold the title for a week or so.
What is the idle power consumption?
the only down is the soldered ram ,, can this use more than 1 pcie port ? a external box with a few pcie slots would be great
Hmm ... what a letdown ... I was expecting the usual review for this one with LPDDR overclock to 7500Mts and maxed TDP. You could have done the eGPU in a separate video.
yes egpu on ubunutu pls
Amazing
+1 for Linux test
Are you able to overclock the lpddr5 memory to 7500 mhz in the bios like the morefine mini pc?
I own a gem10 and so far I could not make it work. Does only run at 6400mts. There is no guide on how to do this (supposedly you set the power to 45w. But there are several points in bios where you can adjust power.) And there are comments on the morefine video that also say it does not work. I haven t found a user coment that said it did work actually.
This is my second Gem 10 with a 7940HS and both were not able to overclock the LPDDR5 to 7500 mhz. On the official Aoostar Gem 10 page it is now writen :
Note: In order to ensure the stability of the machine, the GEM10 overseas version does not support overclocking to 7500Mhz
@@berlin36moto have you noticed any thermal issues so far? I´m about to buy this GEM10 as well, but I'm so freak out about overheat problems, any advise or comment? thanks!
I will never be able to buy mini pc over $400... i just think more than that i prefer to get gaming laptop.
Linux yes please and Horizon Zero dawn!
Please Linux on eGPU, thann👍
PlayStation 3 emulation test please on iGPU 😁
Sick
is this the fastest mini PC? 🤔
what are the dimensions? Can't find it on their website
about 15cm2 it is a square, a little bit larger than a a few rubik blocks together
@@ARUchannel1 Thank you very much!!!!!
I believe it was 10.7 x 10.7 x 6 cm^3.
I was expecting it to be large tho
...AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS has 20 usable PCIe Lanes.... 3 nvme slots alraedy occupies 12 lanes (4 lanes x 3) ... was something left out in that system?
not all nvme slots use that many lanes. its gen 4 and has 3 slots. could easily all be x2
Links dont work unfortunately.
Won’t ship to Australia, why not!!!!
We aren't part of earth mate. 😂
Faster ram? LPDDR5 is slower than DDR5. 5600 ddr5 would be better. At the very least should have gone lpddr5 7500 ie the max it officially supports.
Another day another mini pc
What's the point of so many of them
Better than the Minisforum EM780?
Where did this come from!?
China.
I want one
Mini Pcs should have an intel 14900hx with thunderbolt 5, pcie 5.0 nvme and alienware graphics amplifier port
So a little atom bomb. Lol
No thank you Intel who? 😂 Do you even know about PCs?
@@dzibanart8521 obviously not this video size pc, but a performance mini pc bigger size. Minisforum did one with 13900hx if i remember correctly.
Brother, AMD isn’t going to sleep with you.
@@Rexolaboy 😅 not this video size pc but a bigger one. ok maybe core ultra 7 or core ultra 9. You hate intel 🤔 ?
It doesn't occupy m.2 slot.
WTF MINISFORUM WHY DONT YOU
At this point, just make a pc bruv 😅
i'm here for the oculink
Teste The mini PC white Linux, pease.
Soldered RAM? Dang… deal breaker :(
Круть)))
Good for a video but aweful for price to performance
This spells doom for all Minisforum offerings with similar form factors, especially their UM780XTX, which only has two NVME slots and no Ryzen 9 option. SMH
